To play several videos as one YouTube Live broadcast, send a playlist of media files through an encoder such as OBS Studio. YouTube Studio does not turn an ordinary viewer-facing YouTube playlist into a live broadcast: the encoder plays the files and sends the resulting video feed to YouTube. For a repeatable local-file playlist, OBS’s VLC Video source provides ordering, shuffle, and looping controls.
What “stream a YouTube playlist” means
A YouTube playlist is normally a queue of uploaded videos that viewers can watch on demand. A YouTube Live broadcast is a live video feed sent from an encoder to a broadcast in YouTube Studio. To make several clips play during one live event, load the media files into an encoder playlist and send that feed to YouTube. The documented workflow does not convert a watch playlist of hosted YouTube videos into a live stream. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide and the OBS guide to Media Sources.
Before you start
- Enable live streaming early. The channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave it until just before the broadcast. YouTube says streamers must be at least 16 years old. See YouTube’s live-streaming access requirements.
- Prepare video files you may legally broadcast. You are responsible for rights to the video and audio in your stream. A video being publicly playable on YouTube does not by itself give permission to rebroadcast it. Live content must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service.
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC being installed. The source can play a playlist of media items; the OBS guide describes it as allowing “a playlist of items, similar to an Image Slideshow.”
- Use a stable upload connection. YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload bandwidth headroom above the bitrate you select. Resolution, frame rate, and bitrate all affect the required upload speed. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest; consult its live encoder settings and bitrate guidance for settings appropriate to your chosen output.
Set up an OBS playlist and broadcast it
- Create or schedule the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or schedule one. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that broadcast. YouTube documents the encoder connection in its encoder setup guide.
- Add the playlist source in OBS. In your scene, add a VLC Video source and load the local video files into its playlist. Install VLC if OBS does not offer or play the source. OBS’s Media Sources guide documents this playlist-capable source.
- Choose playback behavior. Leave shuffle off to play items in listed order; turn it on for random order. Enable Loop Playlist if you want the sequence to repeat. Check each file’s picture and audio in OBS before sending it live.
- Configure the encoder connection. In OBS streaming settings, enter the YouTube stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your channel. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio. See YouTube’s stream key guidance.
- Start the encoder and preview. Start streaming in OBS and wait for the feed to appear in Live Control Room. Confirm that the picture and sound are correct, then select Go live for a scheduled broadcast. Test representative motion and audio, and watch YouTube’s stream-health status rather than assuming the feed is healthy because OBS says it is connected.
- Keep bandwidth in reserve. Avoid saturating the connection with other uploads or traffic. YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom; the needed capacity depends on the resolution, frame rate, and bitrate of the selected stream. Use RTMPS where supported.
- End the event deliberately. End the broadcast in YouTube and stop the encoder. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; do not rely on that automatic archive for a broadcast lasting 12 hours or longer.
Scheduling and redirect are not playlist controls
Scheduling makes a stream appear as upcoming so viewers can find it and opt into reminders. Live Redirect can send viewers to a Premiere or another live stream after the current broadcast ends, subject to YouTube’s eligibility and configuration requirements. Neither feature queues the video files within the live broadcast; the encoder playlist controls that playback. See YouTube’s Live Redirect guidance.
Common problems and fixes
- The VLC Video source is missing or will not play files: Install VLC, then reopen or refresh OBS and check that the playlist points to accessible media files.
- The broadcast appears in Studio but has no picture or sound: Check that the OBS scene includes the VLC Video source, the intended files are loaded, and the source is visible and unmuted. Preview the feed in Live Control Room before going live.
- The stream disconnects or reports poor health: Reduce competing network use and confirm that upload capacity exceeds the stream bitrate with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Recheck encoder output settings against YouTube’s guidance.
- YouTube rejects the stream key or does not receive a feed: Confirm that the URL and key belong to the intended broadcast, and that live streaming is enabled for the channel. Reset the key if it may have been exposed, then update the encoder setting.
- The playlist plays in the wrong order or stops at the end: Turn shuffle off for listed order and enable Loop Playlist if the sequence should repeat.
- A video or music track triggers a rights issue: Stop using material unless you have the necessary broadcast rights. Public availability or a successful test playback does not establish permission to rebroadcast.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube channel rather than operating OBS on a local computer, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos or a playlist from the cloud. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home; StreamNeo supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. For Indian customers, UPI works; card checkout is available worldwide. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
