A UPS can keep an OBS stream online through a short power cut if it has enough capacity for your streaming PC and essential network equipment. If the PC loses power, OBS cannot reconnect until the computer starts again; keeping the broadcast going after that depends on the computer, OBS, your internet connection, and the YouTube event all recovering successfully.
What happens to the stream when power fails?
There are two different problems to plan for. If the PC stays powered but the internet connection drops, OBS automatic reconnect may restore the encoder connection. If the PC shuts down, OBS is off too: it cannot reconnect until the computer has power and boots. Even after OBS resumes sending video, YouTube’s incoming preview and the event’s public live status are separate checks.
A UPS provides temporary power, not an indefinite backup. It also cannot keep the broadcast connected if your internet service or required network equipment is unavailable. The APC manual describes battery-backed outlets as providing power for a limited period during an outage, so runtime depends on the actual load and UPS setup—not a universal number.
Prepare the PC, network, OBS, and YouTube event
1. Put the essential equipment on UPS battery backup
Connect the streaming PC and the modem, router, or other network equipment needed for the stream to battery-backed outlets—not outlets that provide surge protection only. Check the UPS manual to identify which outlets supply battery power. Size the UPS for the combined equipment load and the bridge time you need; no single capacity or runtime suits every setup. APC’s manual excerpt on battery-backup outlets explains their limited backup role and identifies computers and critical peripherals as appropriate loads.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Enable OBS automatic reconnect
Before going live, open OBS Studio and select Settings → Advanced. Enable Automatically Reconnect. Check the labels in your installed OBS version, since they can vary. This setting is useful when the computer remains on and OBS loses its connection; it does not power on a shut-down PC or guarantee that a disconnected camera or other source will recover. OBS documents reconnect behavior in its Studio Overview Guide.
3. Review the YouTube event’s start and stop behavior
In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, review the stream’s settings for auto-start and auto-stop. Reused stream settings copy those selections, so verify them for the event you intend to recover. Auto-stop can affect what happens when the encoder disconnects; YouTube does not document a universal reconnect grace period or promise that every event configuration will resume the same public broadcast.

YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a stream URL and key, then separates the incoming encoder feed from the action that makes the event live. See Manage live stream settings and Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
4. Decide whether the PC can restart after power returns
A UPS restoring power does not necessarily start a PC that shut down during the outage. Some computers or motherboards offer a firmware option to power on when AC power returns, but support and menu names vary. Consult the exact system or motherboard manual before changing BIOS/UEFI settings. APC notes that automatic restart after a UPS has fully discharged depends on a suitable computer BIOS setting: APC Back-UPS restart guidance and Schneider Electric’s computer restart guidance.

Recover the broadcast after an outage
When power returns, check each layer in order. A PC that has restarted does not prove OBS is sending, and an OBS connection does not by itself prove the YouTube event is public and live.
- Restore power and internet. Confirm the PC, modem/router, and any other required network equipment are on and connected.
- Start the computer. If it did not start automatically, power it on manually. A firmware power-on-after-AC-loss setting only helps on systems that support and have enabled it.
- Check OBS. Confirm OBS is open, the correct scene is selected, audio and video sources are producing output, and the encoder connection has recovered. If OBS is disconnected, give automatic reconnect a chance; if it does not reconnect, check the network and use OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm that YouTube shows an incoming preview and inspect the event status. If the event is not live, follow the current Live Control Room workflow and select Go live when appropriate.
- Check sources that have their own power. Verify cameras, capture devices, and audio equipment separately. OBS reconnect does not guarantee that a source disconnected by the outage has recovered.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you see | Likely issue | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The PC has no power | The computer shut down and did not start when power returned. | Restore power and start it manually. Check the PC or motherboard manual for a supported power-on-after-AC-loss option if automatic restart matters. |
| The PC is on, but OBS is disconnected | The encoder connection or network path has not recovered. | Check that the modem/router and internet connection are working. Confirm OBS automatic reconnect is enabled; if it still fails, follow the OBS connection troubleshooting guide. |
| OBS appears connected, but YouTube is not live | YouTube may be receiving the encoder feed without the event being in its public live state. | Inspect the Live Control Room preview and event status, then select Go live if the event workflow calls for it. |
| The stream is back, but a camera or audio source is missing | The source or its power may not have recovered with OBS. | Check the device, its cables and power, and the source output in OBS. Source recovery is separate from encoder reconnect. |
| The outage lasts longer than the UPS backup, or the internet is down | The available power or network connection is insufficient to carry the stream. | Wait for power and connectivity to return, then restore the PC, OBS, sources, and YouTube event in sequence. A UPS cannot ensure continuity beyond its available backup or restore an unavailable ISP connection. |
What a UPS can—and cannot—guarantee
For outage resilience, assess the UPS against the combined equipment load and the outage duration you want to bridge. Confirm that both the PC and required network equipment use battery-backed outlets. Separately check whether the computer supports power-on after AC restoration, whether the YouTube event’s auto-stop setting matches your recovery plan, and whether cameras or other sources recover after losing power.

There is no setup-independent runtime figure or universal YouTube reconnect timeout established by the cited guidance. YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that is an archive threshold, not an outage-recovery grace period. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe the threshold and the preview/Go live workflow.

If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream made from uploaded video, StreamNeo avoids depending on a home PC or home internet connection to keep the encoder running. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud; it does not broadcast a camera feed.
