Yes—but YouTube must still receive the video feed from an encoder that is running somewhere. Turning off the computer that is encoding a live camera, gameplay, or production feed stops that feed. To keep it going, move the encoding to another always-on computer or suitable hardware encoder, or use a hosted service for prerecorded video. Which route fits depends on whether your source is live or prerecorded.
First, identify what you are streaming
A scheduled YouTube event and the video feed are separate. Scheduling creates an upcoming stream experience; it does not play a video or keep an encoder running. YouTube’s encoder workflow connects an encoder using a server URL and stream key, then sends the program feed to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder guidance explains that an encoder can be computer software or standalone hardware.
- Live camera, gameplay, or live production: the source and encoder must remain active. Move them to an always-on machine, suitable hardware, or a managed live-production setup.
- Prerecorded video or a playlist: a cloud streaming service or certain standalone hardware can play and send the media without your home computer.
A prerecorded-video cloud library is not automatically suitable for a live camera or gameplay feed: it plays uploaded media rather than encoding a live input.
Ways to keep the stream going without your computer
1. Prerecorded video: use a cloud service
For a continuous loop or scheduled prerecorded library, a cloud service can keep playback and streaming off your local computer. YouTube’s encoder directory describes Gyre as a cloud-based option for continuous prerecorded YouTube streaming without a dedicated PC. That directory description identifies its intended use; it is not an independent performance or uptime guarantee. Before choosing any service, check its current YouTube support, looping and scheduling controls, storage and stream-duration limits, monitoring and recovery behavior, and total cost.

2. Prerecorded video: consider a standalone encoder
YouTube’s encoder directory lists the AJA HELO Plus as a standalone H.264 encoder and says its PlayToStream functionality can schedule prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live without a computer. This is a specialized hardware route, not a general replacement for a computer encoder in every live-camera or gameplay setup. Verify current availability, supported formats, and the exact playback workflow before buying.
3. Live camera or gameplay: move the encoder
If the program is being created live, the source and encoding have to continue elsewhere. You can leave the computer-based encoder on, move production to a separate always-on computer, or use an appropriate hardware encoder or managed broadcast setup. Confirm that the chosen device can accept your actual input and produce the resolution, format, and audio configuration your stream needs; the options above do not establish compatibility for every camera, game, or production workflow.

4. Scheduling alone is not enough
In YouTube Studio, scheduling an event does not supply its encoded feed. Connect the encoder to the event with the server URL and stream key, wait for YouTube to receive a preview, and then go live if your settings and workflow require it. YouTube provides auto-start and auto-stop settings for encoder workflows, but check those settings on the specific stream rather than assuming the scheduled event will automatically start and end in the way you want. Set up the YouTube stream securely
- Confirm channel eligibility. YouTube’s getting-started guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours, so enable it before the planned broadcast.
- Create or schedule the event in YouTube Studio. Select the intended stream and confirm its settings. Scheduling prepares the event page; it does not start playback by itself.
- Copy the server URL and stream key into the encoder. YouTube describes stream keys as functioning like a password and address. Keep the key private; if it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
- Start the encoder or playback device and check the incoming preview. Confirm video and audio before going live. Follow the event’s auto-start and auto-stop settings rather than presuming they are enabled.
- Monitor the source and keep a backup recording if the program matters. For unattended operation, check how the service or device reports failures and whether it restarts playback or encoding. YouTube recommends checking audio/video quality and keeping a local archive where possible.

What can stop an unattended stream?
- The source or encoder stops. If the computer or device producing a live input shuts down, its feed stops. For prerecorded playback, check the hosted service or hardware’s failure notifications, restart behavior, and monitoring before relying on unattended operation.
- The key or connection is wrong. Recheck the stream key and server URL in both YouTube Studio and the encoder. Reset an exposed key and replace it wherever it is configured.
- The event is scheduled but no preview arrives. Scheduling is not transmission. Start the encoder or playback device, confirm it is connected to the correct event, and wait for YouTube’s preview before going live.
- Live streaming is not enabled. Verify the channel and allow up to 24 hours for first-time enablement, as YouTube notes.
- YouTube drops the stream. A recovery feature may reconnect a service, but do not infer a guaranteed uninterrupted broadcast from cloud hosting alone. Check how the selected setup handles a dropped connection and confirm that it reports recovery or failure.
- Copyright or reused-content issues arise. Use only video and audio you have the rights to stream, including music and third-party footage. A technical setup does not grant permission or guarantee monetization; review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies for your content.
Plan for archives and very long streams
YouTube says a stream shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and recommends recording a local archive as backup. Streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. Viewers also cannot rewind to a point before the live stream began. If preserving the complete program matters, record a separate copy rather than treating the live broadcast as the only archive.
