How to Prevent OBS from Dropping Frames on a 24/7 YouTube Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

OBS cannot guarantee an uninterrupted 24/7 stream with one setting. First identify whether the problem is network dropped frames or local rendering/encoding overload; the fixes are different. For network drops, stabilize the connection and lower the bitrate if it exceeds sustained upload capacity. For encoding overload, reduce the computer’s workload. Then test a representative broadcast and monitor YouTube’s stream health.

Identify which kind of frames you are losing

Check OBS’s dropped-frame count and connection status, the wording of any OBS warning, and YouTube’s stream-health messages around the time the problem occurs. OBS distinguishes connection drops from rendering or encoding overload; treating them as the same problem can lead to unnecessary setting changes or hardware purchases.

OBS reports dropped frames or a poor connection

OBS defines dropped frames as a connection to the remote streaming server that is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Too many can disconnect the stream. OBS says, “It is extremely unlikely for OBS Studio to cause dropped frames.” OBS sends directly from your computer to the streaming service rather than through an intermediate OBS streaming server. OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting and the OBS FAQ explain the distinction.

OBS reports encoding overload or the local output stutters

Encoding or rendering overload is a local performance issue, not the same as a failing network path. OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide points to GPU overload or a bottleneck between the GPU and the rest of the system. If the dropped-frame count is not rising while local output becomes choppy, investigate system load before changing network settings.

Viewers buffer but OBS counters look normal

Viewer buffering does not by itself prove that OBS is dropping frames. Playback depends on the viewer’s device, location, and connection as well as the source stream. OBS’s streaming issues guidance treats buffering as a separate symptom. Check YouTube stream health and ask whether the problem affects multiple viewers before assuming the sender is at fault.

Set a bitrate your connection can sustain

Use the reliably sustained upload capacity of the actual streaming connection, not a best-case advertised speed or one favorable speed-test result. A speed test helps establish capacity, but cannot prove that the route will remain stable throughout a 24/7 broadcast. Retest when other people or devices are using the same connection.

  • OBS suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate. Treat that as a starting heuristic, not a guarantee. OBS’s connection guide describes the recommendation.
  • YouTube recommends keeping 20% of available upload bandwidth free beyond the total stream bitrate. Shared networks can limit the capacity available to your stream, and upload speed may differ from download speed. YouTube’s streaming network tips explain its guidance.

These are two useful setup heuristics, not interchangeable promises of stability. If dropped frames continue, lower the bitrate and check whether the connection improves. Consider other traffic on the network and the route to YouTube, not just the headline speed-test number.

Match YouTube’s live encoder settings

Use YouTube’s live-ingest recommendations for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you have actually selected. Do not substitute YouTube’s upload-video encoding recommendations for live-stream settings. The table below gives selected H.264 live-ingest entries from YouTube’s currently retrieved guidance; other combinations are listed in the complete live encoder settings table.

H.264 live ingest format Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p60 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

YouTube lists different 1080p values for AV1/H.265: 4 Mbps minimum and 10 Mbps recommended at 30 fps, and 4 Mbps minimum and 12 Mbps recommended at 60 fps. Those are YouTube recommendations for live ingest, not evidence that your upload connection can sustain them.

  • Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP.
  • Rate control: Use CBR for RTMP/RTMPS.
  • Keyframes: Set a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube says it must not exceed 4 seconds.
  • Codec and frame rate: YouTube’s live guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1, up to 60 fps. Choose a combination supported by your encoder and use the matching row in YouTube’s table.

YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewer devices and network conditions. A high source bitrate does not fix an unstable sender connection. YouTube’s live encoder settings list the current ingest requirements and recommendations.

Use this network troubleshooting sequence

  1. Test over Ethernet. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi may be unstable. If you need a wired link, test the cable and connection before buying anything; a cable cannot fix ISP congestion or a local encoding bottleneck. OBS’s connection guide identifies cables among the possible fault points.
  2. Lower the bitrate for a controlled test. If connection drops decrease, the previous bitrate or available network capacity may have been part of the problem. Keep adequate margin for competing traffic rather than returning immediately to a best-case setting.
  3. Check OBS’s connection options one at a time. On Windows, try enabling Network Optimizations and TCP pacing as diagnostic tests; OBS says some users report improvement. Leave Bind to IP at Default. Try IPv4 Only only as a test; if it does not help, restore the default IPv4 and IPv6 setting.
  4. Use Dynamic Bitrate only as a trade-off. OBS labels this option beta. It can lower bitrate during congestion rather than drop frames, but does not resolve the underlying connection problem and can reduce stream quality.
  5. Check for software and driver interference. OBS names VPNs, security software, bundled network-prioritization utilities such as Lenovo Vantage or Killer NIC, and outdated network drivers as possible factors. Change one factor at a time. If temporarily testing with security software disabled, restore protection afterward; get network drivers from your computer or motherboard manufacturer.
  6. Isolate the network path. If drops persist, check the modem/router, cable, network adapter, switch, extender, and other devices along the connection rather than assuming one component has failed. OBS recommends contacting your ISP when local troubleshooting does not resolve the issue or the fault is uncertain.

Reduce local load when encoding or rendering is overloaded

Make one change at a time and compare the same type of scene or workload. OBS lists these remedies for local performance problems:

  • On Windows, try running OBS as administrator in cases of GPU overload.
  • Close other GPU-heavy applications. If streaming a game, cap its frame rate or enable V-Sync, and reduce graphics settings if needed.
  • Lower OBS output resolution or frame rate if the system cannot maintain the current workload.
  • Simplify resource-heavy scenes: high-resolution capture media, complex filters, many or large browser sources, and oversized scene collections can add cost.

These are diagnostic experiments, not a reason to upgrade hardware before the symptom points to a local performance limit. Follow OBS’s encoding troubleshooting guide for further diagnosis.

Prepare and monitor a 24/7 broadcast

A continuous stream has more time to encounter intermittent network, power, device, software, or service problems. Neither OBS nor YouTube’s cited guidance provides a universal setting or guarantee for 24/7 uptime. Before launch, test with audio and movement similar to the intended program, confirm YouTube reports healthy stream input, and watch its health messages during operation. If the issue returns, note whether OBS reports connection drops or local overload and investigate that layer first. YouTube’s live encoder guidance specifically recommends testing before streaming and monitoring stream health.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is an always-on YouTube channel playing uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to leaving OBS and a computer running at home: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs the playback from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; there are no quality tiers. StreamNeo can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream.

The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube; it is not a camera-based live broadcast. Start your free StreamNeo day.
