Then check whether the rights owner can add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. These steps reduce risk; they cannot guarantee that a stream will never receive a claim or strike. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches, and even licensed audio can be interrupted if the channel is not allowlisted.
How copyright claims can affect a 24/7 rain stream
YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted material in another live broadcast. If YouTube identifies a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn you. Continued use can interrupt or terminate the stream. YouTube Help explains how copyright issues affect live streams.
A license does not automatically prevent a live interruption. YouTube advises creators to ask rights owners to add their channel to the Content ID allowlist when they have permission to use third-party content. If the stream is archived, YouTube says Content ID claims are made after the livestream ends, so the live transmission and the saved video need to be covered separately. See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.
Choose and verify the exact rain recording
Safest practical starting point: record your own rain audio
YouTube lists original content among its safer sourcing routes. Recording rain yourself gives you a clearer basis for showing where the audio came from. Keep the original files and contemporaneous notes about when and how you made the recording. This can help explain a mistaken match, but it is not a guarantee against claims or disputes.

Sound recordings and musical works are distinct protected works under U.S. copyright concepts. That distinction matters if your rain ambience includes music: having permission for a composition does not necessarily establish the rights status of a particular recording of it. The U.S. Copyright Office describes the distinction in What Musicians Should Know About Copyright. Copyright rules vary by jurisdiction.
For audio made by someone else, check the license itself
Before using a downloaded recording, ask who controls both the sound recording and any underlying work, then confirm the license covers your actual use. Do not infer permission from a download button, a “royalty-free” label, a purchase, or a credit requirement alone.

- Does permission cover YouTube specifically and continuous live transmission?
- Does it also cover an archived copy of the stream and monetization, if applicable?
- Are there territory, duration, or attribution limits?
- Can the rights owner add your channel to the Content ID allowlist?
- Can you keep a copy of the permission or license for the exact recording?
These are questions to resolve in the particular license; no general label establishes the answers. YouTube cautions that audio described as “free” can still be matched by Content ID, and credit in the description does not itself prevent a claim. Its tips for finding safe music recommend checking third-party terms rather than relying on a “free” label.
Public-domain and Creative Commons audio still needs checking
YouTube identifies Creative Commons terms, qualifying copyright exceptions, YouTube Audio Library, Creator Music, permission, and original material among possible safer sourcing routes. None guarantees avoiding a claim or strike. Public-domain status can be complicated to verify, and a composition’s status does not automatically settle the status of a specific recording. Check the exact audio, license conditions, and territories relevant to your use. YouTube’s copyright guidance describes these routes and their limits.

Keep records and monitor the stream
Make a rights folder before going live
Keep the original recording or source information, a copy of the license or written permission, receipts if relevant, and any confirmation that the channel was allowlisted. For self-recorded audio, retain the source file and notes about its creation. These records are practical documentation, not a substitute for permission or a guarantee against claims.
Check YouTube Studio if the stream stops
Monitor the live broadcast and your channel dashboard. If YouTube stops the stream, check YouTube Studio for copyright strikes or other listed issues and follow the instructions shown there. A stream that runs without interruption is not proof that the audio is cleared for an archive or future broadcasts.
