How to Loop Fireplace Video and Audio with FFmpeg

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To loop a fireplace clip that already contains sound, put -stream_loop -1 before its input and add -t after the input if you want a fixed-length file. If video and audio are separate files, loop each input and map the streams explicitly.

Loop one fireplace file into a one-hour video

When your MP4 already contains both the fireplace picture and crackling audio, this command makes a one-hour H.264/AAC output:

ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -i fireplace.mp4 -t 01:00:00 -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 23 -c:a aac -b:a 192k fireplace-loop.mp4

Replace fireplace.mp4 with your input filename and change 01:00:00 to the desired duration. The example re-encodes video with libx264 and audio with AAC; -preset medium, -crf 23, and -b:a 192k are example settings, not a guarantee of a particular quality or file size. Encoder availability depends on your FFmpeg build, and compatibility depends on the playback target.

Why the option order matters

-stream_loop -1 is an input option. Place it before the -i for the file it should repeat. FFmpeg defines -1 as infinite looping; 0 means no looping. The output-side -t 01:00:00 limits the rendered file to one hour, so the loop can be infinite while the export still ends.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Loop separate fireplace video and audio files

If the picture and sound are stored separately, give each input its own loop option and map the streams you want:

ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -i fireplace-video.mp4
  -stream_loop -1 -i crackling-fire.wav
  -map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0 -t 01:00:00
  -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 23 -c:a aac -b:a 192k
  fireplace-loop.mp4

Input 0 is the video file and input 1 is the audio file. -map 0:v:0 selects the first video stream in input 0; -map 1:a:0 selects the first audio stream in input 1. Each -stream_loop -1 controls the input that follows it. The one-hour -t gives the output a definite end even though both sources repeat indefinitely.

Explicit mapping is especially useful if a file contains multiple audio or video streams and FFmpeg’s automatic selection would not choose the one you intend.

Choose between a fixed-length file and an ongoing output

For a finished file

Keep -t DURATION before the output filename, replacing DURATION with the length you want. FFmpeg stops writing when that output duration is reached. For example, -t 02:30:00 sets a two-and-a-half-hour limit.

For an output that runs until you stop it

Omit -t when you want the loop to continue until manually stopped, and configure the output for your intended destination. The commands above show file output only; they do not provide a platform ingest address, credentials, protocol requirements, or current live-stream settings. Obtain those details from the destination platform rather than reusing an unverified URL.

Understand the loop and output options

  • -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely; it must appear before the relevant -i.
  • The video loop filter repeats video frames. It does not, by itself, loop the corresponding audio. For an ordinary video file with sound, input-level looping is the more direct starting point.
  • -t limits output duration. Use it when you need a file with a known end time.
  • -shortest ends output when the shortest output stream ends. It is not a useful stopping condition if every relevant input is looped indefinitely; set -t explicitly for a finite export.
  • -c copy can pass streams through without re-encoding, but stream copying depends on codec and container compatibility and whether the operation supports it. Re-encoding, as in the examples, is a straightforward starting point when the output needs to be created in a target format.

Check the fireplace loop seam

Looping repeats the source; it does not make the transition between its end and beginning seamless. Video and audio files may have different durations, and a clip can have a visible jump, a click, or a brief silence at the join. Inspect and listen to the output around a loop point. If the transition is distracting, use a better source or edit or crossfade the seam before using the file as a repeating input.

When your fireplace footage is several segments

Repeating one reusable clip is different from joining multiple sequential clips. For concatenation, FFmpeg documents the concat filter when re-encoding is needed and the concat demuxer as an option when avoiding re-encoding. Choose the method for the actual task; concatenation methods are not interchangeable with looping a single input.

Troubleshoot common FFmpeg loop problems

  • The output plays once and stops: Check that -stream_loop -1 is before the correct -i. With separate files, add the option before each input that must repeat.
  • The render does not finish: Add output-side -t before the output filename to set a finite duration.
  • The wrong sound or picture appears: Use explicit -map selections for the intended input streams.
  • FFmpeg reports an encoder or codec error: Your installed build may not include the encoder used in the example. Check the encoders and formats available in that installation and use settings supported by your build and playback target.
  • The loop clicks, goes silent, or visibly jumps: Inspect the source’s end and beginning. Repetition does not repair a poorly matched seam.
  • Options behave differently on your computer: FFmpeg documentation references are regenerated nightly for the newest revision; consult the documentation installed with your version when using an older build.
