Choose OBS if you want to preview a scene, combine sources, and control the stream visually; choose FFmpeg if you want a repeatable command-line pipeline that loops a file and sends it to YouTube. Neither is universally more reliable: performance depends on the actual computer, encoder settings, sources, and network. For either workflow, use YouTube’s current ingest guidance, test before broadcasting, and monitor stream health while live.
OBS or FFmpeg: which fits your workflow?
| Consideration | OBS | FFmpeg |
|---|---|---|
| Setup and control | Visual settings, preview, scenes, and interactive start/stop controls. | Command-line options and an output URL, suited to a defined script or pipeline. |
| Looping a file | Add the video as a media source and enable its loop control; confirm the setting in your installed OBS version. | Use -stream_loop -1 before the input’s -i to loop that input indefinitely. |
| Pacing | OBS sends the scene through its configured encoder workflow. | Use -re (or -readrate 1) before the input to read a file at real-time pace. |
| Overlays and changing scenes | Convenient for assembling visible sources and switching scenes during production. | Filters and stream mapping are configured with command-line options; practical for a fixed encode or relay pipeline. |
| Reliability and resource use | Must be evaluated with the specific system, sources, settings, and network. | Must be evaluated with the specific system, sources, settings, and network. The documentation does not establish a fair head-to-head performance winner. |
These are workflow differences, not evidence that either tool uses less CPU or will run longer without failure. This comparison is based on official documentation rather than a benchmark of particular versions, computers, or stream durations. For a recurring job, test the exact setup you intend to use.
What YouTube requires from the outgoing stream
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance for the intended resolution and available upload connection. YouTube lists H.264, HEVC, and AV1 support for RTMP/RTMPS ingest, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. Its recommendation is a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds. Resolution-specific bitrate recommendations can change, so consult the live table rather than relying on a copied value.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. Its RTMPS guidance explains the encrypted connection. Treat the stream key as a password: do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or share it. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio before streaming again.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Loop a video with FFmpeg
Build the command around the input
FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 for infinite input looping and -re for reading at native frame rate. Both are input options, so put them before the corresponding -i. Output options belong before the output URL.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4 [encoding and audio options] -f flv rtmps://.../live2/STREAM_KEY
This is a structural example, not a complete tested command. Choose video and audio codecs, pixel format, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, audio mapping, and muxing options to match the source and YouTube’s current requirements. The FFmpeg manual describes option order and real-time read rate; confirm behavior against the help output for the FFmpeg build you deploy.

Check the loop and the destination
- Use a local test file and confirm the intended audio and video streams are present before sending output.
- Check that the last frames and audio of the file transition cleanly into the beginning. A looping command repeats the input; it does not repair a pause, black frame, or abrupt sound at the file boundary.
- Use the RTMPS ingest address and stream key shown for the intended YouTube broadcast. Never paste a real key into a public script, support post, or article.
- Keep the process running and watch YouTube Live Control Room for connection status and stream-health messages.
Loop a video with OBS
- Choose the YouTube destination. In OBS, connect the YouTube account or select YouTube as the service, then configure the stream key as prompted. OBS’s YouTube streaming guide covers the general setup; its interface can change, so use the controls in your installed version.
- Add the recording. Add the prerecorded file as a media source in the scene you intend to stream. Enable the source’s loop control and verify that it is enabled in the current UI.
- Set and inspect output. Configure the encoder and output to match YouTube’s current guidance for the target resolution, frame rate, and connection. Preview the scene and verify that both picture and audio are present.
- Test before the broadcast. Run a private or otherwise appropriate test using representative movement and audio. Check the transition from the end of the file back to the beginning, and check Live Control Room before treating the event as live.
OBS’s guide is useful for general workflow, but its YouTube-specific material may not reflect the newest interface. YouTube’s current help pages and the installed OBS UI should take precedence for operational details.
Test the broadcast, not just the encoder
YouTube advises testing with audio and motion comparable to the planned stream, then monitoring stream health and messages while broadcasting. Starting OBS or FFmpeg confirms that an encoder process has begun; it does not by itself confirm that a scheduled YouTube event is public. With scheduled streams, encoder connection and going live can be separate actions. Follow the status and controls shown in Live Control Room.

Troubleshoot common looping problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a stream | Wrong destination, invalid key, encoder not connected, or an event that has not been started in Live Control Room. | Recheck the destination and key in YouTube Studio, keep the key private, and inspect the event’s current connection and go-live state. |
| Video or audio is missing | Incorrect source, stream mapping, or audio configuration. | Inspect the OBS scene or FFmpeg input and mappings; preview or test the actual output before the event. |
| Playback is choppy or stream health is poor | Settings do not suit the source or available upload connection, or the host cannot sustain the configured workflow. | Use YouTube’s current resolution-specific bitrate guidance, verify CBR and the keyframe interval, and test on the intended computer and network. |
| A pause or click occurs at each repeat | The recording itself has a discontinuity at its end or beginning. | Inspect and edit the file boundary, then test a full transition. Loop options repeat media; they do not create a seamless edit. |
| A scheduled event is connected but not public | Connecting the encoder and starting the event are separate steps for that broadcast configuration. | Check Live Control Room and use its indicated controls rather than assuming the encoder’s start button makes the event public. |
Choose based on how you will operate it
For a one-off stream or a production with overlays and hands-on scene changes, OBS’s preview and visual controls can make operation easier. For a fixed video-to-ingest workflow that you want to express in a script, FFmpeg exposes looping, pacing, and output options directly. If you need unattended continuous playback, neither documented workflow removes the need to account for the host, internet connection, and stream monitoring.
