That works out to about 324 GB over 30 days at 1 Mbps, or 972 GB at 3 Mbps. These are calculations, not YouTube guarantees: your actual use depends mainly on the bitrate YouTube delivers to your device and how long you watch.
Estimate data use from the bitrate you actually receive
Use this formula for uninterrupted viewing at a steady rate:
GB per day ≈ playback bitrate in Mbps × 10.8
GB over 30 days ≈ playback bitrate in Mbps × 324
The calculation converts bits per second across the viewing period into decimal gigabytes (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes). It assumes 24 hours of playback each day at a constant bitrate and excludes additional network overhead. For a different viewing period, multiply the daily estimate by the number of days.

For example, at a steady 3 Mbps, watching every hour of a 31-day month comes to approximately 1,004 GB (32.4 × 31). The more hours you watch, the less you use proportionally: multiply the daily estimate by your hours watched per day divided by 24.
Why a 24/7 stream has no universal data total
The key input is the bitrate delivered to your device, not just the stream’s resolution label. YouTube says playback quality can change based on viewing conditions, and higher picture quality uses more data. The selected or automatically chosen quality, your connection, and the available stream renditions can all affect consumption. YouTube’s guidance on changing video quality explains these playback-quality choices.

So a 1080p label alone cannot tell you exactly how many gigabytes a particular viewer will use. An accurate estimate for your own connection requires the playback rate YouTube actually delivers over time, or a measurement of your data use while watching.
Do not confuse viewer downloads with broadcaster upload
YouTube’s recommended live-encoder bitrates describe the broadcaster’s ingestion stream sent to YouTube; they are not a table of what each viewer downloads. YouTube transcodes incoming live streams into multiple output formats for viewers. As YouTube Help puts it, “YouTube will automatically transcode your live stream to create many different output formats so that all of your viewers across many devices and networks can watch.” See its live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the encoder guidance.

For example, YouTube recommends H.264 ingestion settings of 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. Those figures help a broadcaster configure an encoder; they do not mean every viewer downloads at those rates. The same guidance lists CBR encoding and stereo audio at 128 Kbps as encoder settings, not universal measurements of viewer consumption.
Estimate your own monthly use
- Choose a sustained playback-rate estimate. Use a measured rate if you have one. Otherwise, calculate scenarios such as 1, 3, or 6 Mbps rather than treating any one rate as guaranteed.
- Multiply by 10.8 for the approximate decimal GB used in 24 hours at that rate.
- Adjust for your viewing time. Multiply the daily figure by hours watched per day divided by 24.
- Multiply by the number of days in your billing or tracking period. For a 30-day month, the shortcut is bitrate in Mbps × 324 for continuous viewing.
- Keep units consistent. These examples use decimal GB, not binary GiB. A provider’s data meter may display units differently.
Keeping the nature stream running is a separate question
This estimate is for someone watching a YouTube stream. If you are the channel owner, your upload to YouTube is a separate data connection and should not be calculated by applying a viewer’s delivered playback rate to every viewer. YouTube’s ingestion recommendations are encoder guidance, as described above.
