How to Check Whether FFmpeg Is Still Streaming to YouTube

A running FFmpeg process does not guarantee YouTube is receiving the stream. Check local output, then verify the preview and Stream health in Live Control Room.

Check both ends of the connection: make sure FFmpeg is still running and producing advancing output, then confirm YouTube is receiving the feed in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. A live process alone does not prove that usable video and audio are reaching YouTube.

Check FFmpeg on the machine running the stream

Start with the terminal where FFmpeg is running, or the log file configured for that process. Confirm that the process has not exited and that its output or progress continues to update. If output has stopped, FFmpeg has exited, or a new error appears, inspect the final log lines and investigate the input, encoding, or output connection.

Local activity is only one part of the check: it shows that FFmpeg is doing something, not that YouTube has received the stream. There is no single log line or command flag established here as a definitive success signal; interpret output in the context of your FFmpeg version and command.

Confirm YouTube is receiving the feed

  1. Open the stream in YouTube Studio. Go to YouTube Studio and open the relevant stream in Live Control Room.
  2. Look for the incoming preview. A visible preview is a practical sign that YouTube is receiving video.
  3. Read Stream health and Stream status. Check for an unresolved error and follow the instructions shown with it. YouTube says you can check stream health and analytics while streaming in Live Control Room: YouTube Help: Monitor your stream’s health.
  4. Read the error, including its timestamp and severity. YouTube’s Live Dashboard and Live Control Room identify stream errors; red errors are critical and yellow errors are moderate. Do not assume an error necessarily means FFmpeg stopped. Use the displayed message to guide the next check: YouTube Help: Fix streaming errors.

For a useful additional check, verify that the event is accessible on the channel or watch page and, if you are recording locally, that the archive file continues to grow. These checks do not replace the current Live Control Room health messages: YouTube Help: Stream preparation advice.

Use the two checks to narrow down the fault

What you see What it suggests What to check next
FFmpeg exited, stopped updating, or reported an error A local process, input, encoding, or output failure is possible. Review the final log lines and inspect the input and encoding/output setup before restarting. YouTube’s guidance does not define FFmpeg-specific exit-code meanings.
FFmpeg continues, but YouTube has no preview or reports an error The process may be alive while delivery is failing, or the destination, key, or stream format may be wrong. Follow the specific YouTube error. Verify the stream destination and key, and check the encoder connection and output settings.
Preview and health appear normal, but viewers report trouble The issue may be on the playback or viewer-network side, though encoder problems can affect multiple viewers. Check the public watch page. If viewers on different connections report the same issue, inspect the encoder as well.
YouTube receives the stream, but picture or sound quality is poor The source media or encoder configuration may be unsuitable even though ingest is active. Inspect the source, encoder errors and CPU load. Compare codec, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframe settings with YouTube’s current recommendations.

YouTube’s troubleshooting guide recommends checking the encoder’s picture and sound, encoder errors, and CPU load; if those appear healthy, test the outbound internet connection. If startup fails, verify or refresh the stream key and confirm the correct stream URL and protocol: YouTube Help: Troubleshoot live stream issues.

Check the delivery connection and encoder settings

Upload bandwidth

Check outbound upload capacity, not just download speed. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate; include primary and backup streams if you send both. A connection that cannot sustain the total bitrate may cause health errors or interruptions: YouTube Help: Network guidance.

Protocol, codec, and keyframes

YouTube’s encoder guidance describes RTMP and RTMPS ingestion and recommends RTMPS. It lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. Its recommended keyframe frequency is two seconds and should not exceed four seconds. These are setup targets, not proof that a particular stream is healthy. See the current recommendations for your specific configuration: YouTube Help: Encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Bitrate

Bitrate recommendations vary with codec, resolution, and frame rate. Use YouTube’s current table for the settings you actually stream rather than applying one number to every FFmpeg command. If the settings look correct but delivery is unstable, compare the total bitrate with measured upload capacity and preserve YouTube’s recommended headroom.
