You can run a YouTube livestream from a laptop with webcam mode or encoder software such as OBS. But a laptop-based stream is only as continuous as its power, internet connection, cooling and software—and YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive. For a loop of prerecorded videos that should keep playing while your laptop is off, use a cloud service instead of treating an encoder as a set-and-forget solution.
Choose the right kind of 24/7 stream
First decide what the channel will show. A live camera or microphone feed, a live game or desktop capture, and a loop of prerecorded videos are different jobs. A laptop encoder such as OBS suits live sources and scenes; a prerecorded loop can be hosted in the cloud. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance identifies Gyre as a cloud option for prerecorded videos, while StreamNeo is another YouTube-only option for looping uploaded videos.

Check that your channel can go live
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Its current help guidance also sets a minimum age of 16 for livestreaming. Review YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements before setting up the broadcast. Follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service for everything you show or play.
Set up a laptop encoder stream
- Prepare the laptop and source. Install and open your encoder, connect the camera or capture source if needed, and build the scene you intend to leave running. For gameplay or screen capture, check that the correct display or game source and audio inputs appear in the preview.
- Create the broadcast in YouTube Studio. Open YouTube Studio and create a live stream or schedule one. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain the current workflow. Copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s server and stream-key fields.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: do not show it in a screen capture, paste it into a public chat, or publish it. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before streaming again.
- Choose a reliable video configuration. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 as supported codecs in its encoder settings guidance. Choose a resolution and bitrate supported by both the laptop and the measured upload connection. There is no universal laptop CPU or GPU specification for continuous encoding: test your actual setup for dropped frames, encoder overload and excessive heat.
- Use secure ingestion and test the real workload. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Test with audio, motion and scene changes similar to the intended stream, rather than a static screen if the real content is fast-moving. If suitable, make the first test unlisted or private, then check the preview and stream health in Live Control Room. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend monitoring audio and video quality.
- Start the broadcast and confirm it in YouTube. Start sending from the encoder. Inspect the incoming preview and stream-health indicators in Live Control Room; for a scheduled broadcast, complete the Go live step there when prompted. Do not assume that starting the encoder alone has made a scheduled stream public.
Set a sustainable upload rate in India
Use a speed test from the actual streaming location as a planning input, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service. Select a bitrate your connection can sustain with headroom for normal variation, and test it for an extended period. A fast result in one short test does not establish that the connection will stay stable all day.

Conditions vary by ISP, plan, router, building and location; there is no single India-wide upload speed or backup arrangement that fits every creator. Check your provider’s plan terms and test the connection you will actually use. If the broadcast matters, assess your own power and network backup, router behavior, available disk space and laptop cooling. No accessory or backup device alone guarantees continuous uptime.
Plan for YouTube’s 12-hour archive limit
A 24-hour uninterrupted session has an important replay risk: YouTube says, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” Its archive guidance makes clear that a long stream is not a reliable way to create a complete replay. YouTube also says DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours; see its DVR guidance.

If a complete archive matters, schedule separate broadcasts shorter than 12 hours and record locally as a backup. Check that the local file is growing during the broadcast and plays correctly afterward; a recording cannot protect against every power, disk or software failure.

Troubleshoot common laptop stream problems

Copyright and content checks
Before leaving a stream running, confirm that you have the rights and permissions needed for the video, music, gameplay audio and other material you broadcast. Follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service, and use the copyright safety checklist as a practical review aid. A loop of prerecorded material still needs to comply with platform rules; continuous playback does not make reused or copyrighted content permissible.
