You do not need a desktop session to keep an FFmpeg stream running on a Linux VPS. Test the FFmpeg command over SSH, then run it as a systemd service with -nostdin and a restart policy. That keeps the process running after you disconnect and can restart it after a failure—but you still need to check YouTube’s Live Control Room to confirm the broadcast is actually healthy.
What you need before you start
- A Linux VPS with SSH access and a supported way to install FFmpeg.
- A media source FFmpeg can read, such as a file, and a command that produces a format YouTube accepts.
- A YouTube live stream configuration and the current RTMPS ingestion URL and stream key provided for it.
- A non-root Linux account for the service, plus permission to read the media and any configuration it needs.
Do not choose a VPS size from a generic minimum-spec number. Workload depends on whether FFmpeg copies the source streams or transcodes them, the resolution and bitrate, the number of concurrent streams, the input type, and the provider’s network conditions. No universal VPS specification or performance benchmark is established here.
Install FFmpeg and check the local build
- Install FFmpeg using your distribution’s supported package source or a trusted FFmpeg build.
- Over SSH, check the installed version with
ffmpeg -versionand inspect available options or encoders withffmpeg -hor the relevant encoder’s help output. - Use documentation that matches the installed build where possible. FFmpeg’s online documentation is regenerated nightly and may describe a newer revision than the one on your VPS.
FFmpeg runs from a command line; a graphical desktop is not required.
Test the stream interactively over SSH first
- In YouTube’s live setup, obtain the current RTMPS ingestion endpoint and the stream key for the intended stream. Use the endpoint and settings YouTube gives you rather than relying on an old URL copied from a tutorial.
- Build and run the FFmpeg command in your SSH session before creating a service. Confirm that FFmpeg can read the input and that YouTube reports a healthy incoming stream. Use a private or unlisted test configuration if appropriate.
- For a file input, FFmpeg documents the real-time input pattern
-re -i myfileand an FLV output to an RTMP URL. Adapt that pattern to the current YouTube RTMPS URL and your media’s codec and container needs; it is an illustration, not a complete command for every source. - Once the test works, retain the exact working input, encoding or stream-copy options, output format, and destination when moving to a service. Do not expose the key in shell history, logs, screenshots, or a unit file readable by other users.
RTMPS is RTMP over a secure SSL connection. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance calls for the correct endpoint, hostname and port 443; the hostname matters for SNI authentication. A connection that uses the wrong hostname, wrong port, or cleartext RTMP can fail even if the media options are otherwise valid.

Run FFmpeg as a systemd service
A process launched in an SSH shell is not the best long-running supervisor. A systemd service can continue after logout and can restart FFmpeg when it exits unsuccessfully. The following is an example unit shape, not a tested, drop-in configuration:
[Unit]
Description=FFmpeg YouTube live stream
Wants=network-online.target
After=network-online.target
[Service]
Type=simple
User=stream
Group=stream
WorkingDirectory=/srv/stream
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg -nostdin [input and encoding options] -f flv [current YouTube RTMPS ingestion URL]
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=10s
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
- Create the service account and give it only the access it needs to the media and working directory. Confirm that
/usr/bin/ffmpegis the actual path on your VPS. - Replace the bracketed parts with the tested command and current destination. Adapt quoting and escaping to the target system. Do not leave brackets in the live unit.
- Protect credentials. Avoid placing a stream key in a broadly readable unit file. A restricted configuration file or another secret-handling approach can reduce accidental disclosure; check file ownership and permissions, and consider how the key may appear in process arguments, logs, backups, or administrative interfaces on your host.
- Save the unit under a name such as
/etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-youtube.service, then reload systemd and enable and start it:sudo systemctl daemon-reloadsudo systemctl enable --now ffmpeg-youtube.service - Inspect the service and its recent log output:
sudo systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.servicesudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -n 100 --no-pager - Check the YouTube Live Control Room and, where possible, the actual viewer output. An active service only confirms that systemd sees a running process; it does not prove YouTube is receiving usable media.
-nostdin matters for background use: FFmpeg normally checks console input, which can suspend a background process. The FFmpeg FAQ recommends -nostdin to prevent those input checks. Redirecting standard input from /dev/null is an alternative.

Restart=on-failure is a suitable starting point for a long-running service, and systemd documents restart rate limiting. Set a deliberate delay rather than allowing rapid restart loops. Restarting helps when the process exits; it cannot fix a broken input, invalid key, unsuitable encoding, failed route, or stream that remains active while no healthy media reaches YouTube. Repeated failures may also hit systemd’s start limits, so inspect the journal before resetting or repeatedly restarting the service.
Loop prerecorded video deliberately
If the source is a prerecorded file that should repeat, configure the input loop explicitly, for example with FFmpeg’s input looping option before the relevant input. Confirm that the file is readable by the service account and that the intended YouTube stream or event behavior supports the duration you want.

A loop is not a reconnect mechanism. If the service restarts, the input may begin again from the start, depending on the command and input design. If resuming from a particular point matters, design and test that behavior separately.
Diagnose failures by checking both the process and the broadcast
| Symptom | What to check | Practical next step |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg suspends or appears stuck after being backgrounded | Whether it is still checking console input | Run it with -nostdin, or redirect standard input from /dev/null. |
| Connection fails immediately | Exact RTMPS endpoint, hostname, port 443, TLS/SNI path, and stream key | Copy the current endpoint and key from YouTube’s live setup, correct the destination, and retry. Do not switch to cleartext RTMP as a workaround for an RTMPS configuration problem. |
| The service repeatedly restarts | FFmpeg error output in journalctl, input readability, credentials, endpoint, network route, format compatibility, and VPS resource pressure |
Fix the underlying error first. Check whether systemd’s restart rate limit has stopped further attempts. |
| The service is active but the stream is not healthy | YouTube’s live status and whether valid media is still flowing from FFmpeg | Use YouTube’s status and the FFmpeg output to distinguish a healthy broadcast from a process that merely remains alive. |
| The stream drops under load | Whether FFmpeg transcodes or copies, resolution, bitrate, concurrent streams, input type, and available network capacity | Measure and adjust the actual workload or VPS resources; there is no supported universal VPS size to prescribe. |
Automatic restart responds to process failure, not every silent or semantic fault. A process can stay active while the source stalls or the broadcast is unusable, so service status and YouTube’s live health indicators answer different questions.

Choose between a VPS and a managed cloud loop
A VPS gives you control over the Linux environment, FFmpeg command, and service supervision, but you are responsible for the host, media, configuration, and diagnosis. If you want prerecorded video kept live on YouTube without operating a server or leaving a computer on, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud and does not stream from a camera.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it does not re-encode or use quality tiers. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
