FFmpeg saying it has started does not prove YouTube is receiving your video or that a scheduled event has been published. Open the stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room: a preview and the stream-health messages show whether YouTube sees and accepts the feed. If the preview appears for a scheduled stream, you may still need to click Go live.
Work through the checks below in order. Without your FFmpeg command, its logs, and the Live Control Room status, there is no way to identify one certain cause.
Find which stage is showing offline
Separate the problem into stages instead of changing FFmpeg settings at random. A local process can run while the connection, YouTube ingest, event publication, or viewer access still fails.
| Stage | What to inspect | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Local encoder | FFmpeg logs and whether it is producing the intended audio and video | Whether FFmpeg is generating a feed; this alone does not establish YouTube ingest. |
| Connection and authentication | Server URL, protocol, stream key, and connection errors | Whether FFmpeg is attempting to reach the intended ingest endpoint with the intended key. |
| YouTube ingest | Live Control Room preview, health indicator, and timestamped errors | Whether YouTube is receiving the feed and what problem it reports. |
| Event publication | Scheduled stream state and the Go live action | Whether a scheduled event with an incoming preview has actually been published. |
| Delivery and viewer access | Upload capacity, connection stability, and the channel or watch page | Whether delivery or access is impaired beyond local encoding. |
Check YouTube’s preview and health messages first
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room for the specific stream you intended to start.
- Look for a preview. If it is absent, YouTube may not be receiving the feed, or the connection may not have reached the intended stream.
- Read the health indicator and its timestamped messages. YouTube describes red errors as critical and yellow errors as moderate; unresolved messages may reappear.
- Use the message as the next diagnostic clue rather than changing several settings at once. YouTube lists incorrect stream format and codec issues among its live-stream errors.
A local “started” message is evidence about FFmpeg, not confirmation that YouTube accepted the stream. YouTube’s troubleshooting pages explain the Live Control Room checks in Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream and Live streaming error messages.

Verify the stream URL, key, and scheduled-event status
Match the destination and credential
Compare the server URL and stream key in your FFmpeg command with the values shown for the intended stream in Live Control Room. The URL is the destination; the stream key is the credential YouTube uses to accept the feed. A valid key for a different stream is not the right key for this event.
If a third-party encoder cannot start successfully, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends copying a new stream key and updating the encoder. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it or paste it into a public log or support post. See Manage live stream settings and YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting steps.

Distinguish sending from going live
For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s encoder workflow is: start the encoder, wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room, then click Go live. Starting FFmpeg and publishing the scheduled event are separate actions. If the preview is present but viewers still see the event as offline, check whether the event’s manual start is still pending.
Check FFmpeg’s protocol and encoding against YouTube’s guidance
Use the encoder settings recommended for the protocol and type of stream you selected; YouTube’s requirements and recommendations are not identical for every workflow. The official reference is Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

- Protocol: Confirm that FFmpeg is using the intended RTMP or RTMPS endpoint and that the URL matches the stream shown in Live Control Room.
- Video and audio codecs: Check that the output codecs are among those supported in YouTube’s encoder guidance. A process can run while its output format is rejected.
- Bitrate: YouTube’s guidance calls for constant bitrate. Check the actual output settings and the health messages before adjusting the rate.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency; the cited encoder guidance says it should not exceed four seconds. These are technical recommendations, not evidence of a particular cause in your setup.
Do not assume that changing resolution or bitrate will fix an authentication, event-publication, or network problem. First match the setting to the explicit error and the workflow you chose.
If you use RTMPS, verify the secure endpoint
Copy the RTMPS server URL from Live Control Room rather than assuming a regular RTMP URL is interchangeable. YouTube says both the protocol and server should be rtmps. It describes RTMPS as “RTMP over a Transport Layer Security (TLS/SSL) connection” that provides encryption.

Use the exact endpoint and error context in YouTube’s RTMPS instructions; do not substitute a different server or port without a reason.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Rule out upload bandwidth and connection instability
The total stream bitrate must fit within the available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the total bitrate. For example, if your combined video and audio bitrate is 10 Mbps, the cited recommendation implies at least 12 Mbps of available upload capacity. That is a bandwidth-planning figure, not a guarantee of a stable connection.

If the local encoder output appears healthy but the dashboard reports interrupted delivery or no stable feed, investigate the outbound connection. YouTube advises checking the encoder locally and then looking at the internet connection when local output appears healthy. See YouTube’s streaming tips and troubleshooting guidance.
Confirm viewers can access the published stream
A preview in Live Control Room establishes that YouTube sees a feed; it does not by itself establish that the event is live and accessible to viewers. Check the event from your channel and watch pages, and test before the event when possible. This final check helps separate an ingest issue from a publication or access issue.
Common symptoms and next checks
| What you see | Check next |
|---|---|
| FFmpeg runs, but no preview appears | Compare the URL, protocol, and key with the intended stream; then inspect the timestamped Live Control Room health messages. |
| Preview appears, but a scheduled event remains offline | Check whether you still need to click Go live in Live Control Room. |
| A format or codec error appears | Compare FFmpeg’s output with YouTube’s encoder settings for the chosen workflow before changing other settings. |
| RTMPS shows an SSL error or timeout | For an SSL error, try the documented port 443 check; for a timeout, recheck the RTMPS URL and encoder support. |
| Local output looks healthy, but delivery is unreliable | Check whether upload capacity includes the recommended headroom and investigate connection stability. |
| YouTube shows a feed, but viewers cannot open the event | Verify the event’s publication state and accessibility from the channel and watch pages. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube stream rather than diagnose a particular FFmpeg session, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer does not have to stay on, the uploaded video streams as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the Monthly price is $9.99 per month.
