For a non-stop YouTube loop stream in OBS, use CBR rate control and a 2-second keyframe interval, then choose a bitrate that matches your codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom; no bitrate setting can compensate for a connection or computer that cannot sustain the broadcast.
Recommended OBS settings for YouTube Live
YouTube’s guidance for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed 4 seconds. The recommendations below are starting points, not guarantees that a particular PC or internet connection can sustain the selected mode. YouTube’s encoder settings guide lists the current codec and bitrate details.
| Setting | Recommended choice | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Service/protocol | Use YouTube Live and RTMPS where available. | YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the stream to and through Google’s servers. YouTube Help |
| Rate control | CBR | YouTube recommends CBR for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | Do not exceed 4 seconds. Encoder controls may show this as a keyframe interval or keyframe distance. |
| Video codec | H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1, if supported by the selected OBS encoder and YouTube stream configuration. | Use a codec supported across your encoder and event settings; the bitrate examples below are specifically for H.264. |
| Resolution and frame rate | Choose a mode your source and connection can sustain; YouTube supports up to 60 fps. | Match the bitrate to the selected resolution and frame rate. Avoid upscaling a lower-resolution loop merely to use a higher bitrate row. |
| Pixel and scan format | Square pixels; progressive scan | These are among YouTube’s advanced picture recommendations. |
| Audio | AAC or MP3; for stereo, 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps | Exact audio controls and names vary by encoder. |
Choose a bitrate that fits the picture and connection
For H.264, YouTube’s current recommended bitrates include the following. These are recommendations, not minimums, and apply to the listed codec, resolution, and frame rate; use YouTube’s table for other modes or codecs. The source page does not state a publication year; the figures were accessed in 2026. YouTube Help: encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
| H.264 video mode | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps |
Plan for the total outgoing stream bitrate, including audio, and leave 20% of available upload capacity unused as headroom. YouTube advises running a speed test and testing with audio and movement similar to the real stream; monitor stream health while live. A speed-test result is not a promise of sustained capacity, especially if other devices or applications use the connection. YouTube’s streaming tips cover bandwidth, testing, and monitoring.

Set up OBS and connect the YouTube event
- Choose the event in YouTube Live Control Room. Create or select the live stream and retrieve its stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Enter the connection details in OBS. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key (or use the available account connection workflow). If entering server details manually, use the event’s stream URL. OBS and YouTube labels can change by version.
- Set video output. In Settings → Output, select the streaming encoder and set rate control to CBR, the target bitrate appropriate to your mode, and a 2-second keyframe interval. Select a supported codec and configure audio as required by the encoder. Some advanced options have different names or may be unavailable in a given encoder.
- Set the source mode. In Settings → Video, set the output resolution and frame rate to the mode you intend to sustain, up to YouTube’s stated 60 fps support. Confirm that the source material and scene are not being needlessly scaled or converted.
- Test privately or with an appropriate event setting. Start the OBS feed and inspect YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators before beginning the public broadcast. Check image, audio, and dropped-frame behavior.
- Test the whole loop. Let the video reach its end and return to the beginning. Check for a pause, black frame, audio gap, or scene/source transition that might recur every cycle. This is important for a loop even if the opening minute looks correct.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: do not publish it or share screenshots that reveal it. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS with the new key.
OBS recommends leaving defaults alone unless you have a reason to change them. OBS Studio’s overview guide describes its setup approach and output settings.
Choose an encoder that stays stable for the full broadcast
OBS hardware encoding can reduce CPU work, but it is not automatically the best-quality choice: OBS notes that modern hardware encoders can encode efficiently with minimal performance impact, while earlier-generation hardware may deliver lower quality at the same bitrate. OBS’s hardware encoding guide explains the trade-off.

There is no universal encoder winner without knowing the PC, GPU generation, codec support, scene, and target mode. Evaluate the actual setup for sustained stability, CPU versus GPU workload, image quality at the chosen bitrate, and dropped frames. Use whichever supported encoder handles the real loop reliably; do not raise resolution or bitrate beyond what the machine and connection can maintain.
Plan separately for a continuous feed, DVR, and archive
A continuous outgoing OBS feed does not ensure YouTube will preserve one complete replay or let viewers rewind the entire broadcast. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube also says DVR may be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours. The source pages do not state publication years; these limits were accessed in 2026. See Archive live streams and Turn on DVR on live streams.

- If keeping the program matters, make a local recording and confirm that the computer has enough storage for the intended duration.
- If viewers need rewind or a complete saved replay, consider whether shorter, separately archived sessions better meet that need. This is practical planning, not a guarantee about how YouTube will handle a particular event.
- For a long run, test upload stability over time, monitor OBS and YouTube stream health, and verify local recording rather than assuming it is working.
Troubleshoot common loop-stream problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube reports unstable or poor stream health | The selected total bitrate is too close to available upload capacity, or capacity varies. | Run a speed test, leave the recommended 20% upload headroom, reduce bitrate or choose a lower mode, and test again with representative audio and motion. Check whether other devices are consuming upload capacity. |
| OBS reports dropped frames | The connection or route to YouTube may not sustain the outgoing feed. | Check OBS statistics and YouTube stream health; lower the bitrate or resolution, retest over time, and avoid treating a brief successful preview as proof of long-run stability. |
| OBS reports rendering or encoding lag | The scene, scaling, or encoder may exceed available GPU/CPU capacity. | Reduce scene complexity or output mode and compare supported hardware and software encoders on the actual machine. Hardware encoding may lower CPU work, but generation and image-quality tradeoffs matter. |
| YouTube preview remains offline or no video arrives | The stream URL/key may be wrong, the event may not be selected, or OBS may not be sending. | Confirm the event and key in Live Control Room, re-enter the current stream details in OBS, and inspect the preview before starting the public event. Reset an exposed key. |
| The picture looks soft or blocky | The bitrate may be low for the selected mode, or the source itself may be limited. | Check the source and selected resolution/frame rate, then choose the matching bitrate guidance. Only increase bitrate if upload capacity can sustain it with headroom. |
| A glitch repeats at every restart | The loop’s end-to-start transition or audio behavior may be imperfect. | Test a full cycle, inspect the source transition and audio tail, and adjust the loop or scene so the repeated boundary is clean. |
| The broadcast continues but no complete replay appears | The event exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold. | Use a local recording for retention and plan shorter sessions if separate archives or rewind are important; a stream longer than 12 hours may not be archived and DVR may be limited or unavailable. |
