How to Set Up a VPS for 24/7 YouTube Streaming with FFmpeg

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can keep a YouTube stream running from a VPS by hosting your media and FFmpeg on a Linux server, sending FFmpeg’s output to YouTube Live over RTMPS, and running FFmpeg under a service manager such as systemd. A restart policy can bring the process back after it exits, but it cannot guarantee uninterrupted streaming: your media, server capacity, network, stream key, and YouTube’s ingest service all still matter.

How the setup works

The VPS stores or accesses the video and runs FFmpeg. YouTube Live Control Room provides the ingest URL and stream key. FFmpeg sends the stream to that destination; a service manager keeps the process running and can restart it after an unexpected exit.

This is a useful way to host a continuous pre-recorded stream without leaving a personal computer on. It is not a guarantee of 24/7 uptime: a process restart will not fix a missing file, an expired or incorrect key, an overloaded server, a network outage, or a YouTube-side problem.

Choose a VPS that fits the actual workload

There is no universal VPS size for this job. Requirements depend on whether FFmpeg can pass compatible audio and video through unchanged or must decode and re-encode them. Re-encoding demand varies with resolution, frame rate, encoder preset, scaling, and filters. A provider’s advertised vCPU count alone does not establish that the server can sustain your chosen encode.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Before selecting a plan, check sustained CPU performance, outbound bandwidth and egress terms, storage for your media, recovery options, and the server’s network route to YouTube. If the server cannot encode reliably at your target settings, reduce resolution or frame rate, choose a less demanding encode, or use a source that does not require re-encoding. Provider-specific capacity and prices are not established here; test the workload on the plan you intend to use.

Set up the stream step by step

1. Prepare Linux, FFmpeg, and the media

  1. Create a Linux VPS and make the source video available on its storage. Keep enough free disk space for the media, logs, and any temporary files your workflow creates.

  2. Install FFmpeg using the package source appropriate for your distribution, and check the installed version with ffmpeg -version. Use ffprobe input.mp4 to inspect the file’s codecs, resolution, frame rate, and audio streams before deciding whether to copy or encode them.

  3. Plan for the server to read the media in real time rather than send a file as fast as possible. For a continuous loop, configure the input to repeat; test that the transition between repetitions behaves acceptably for your content.

FFmpeg documents real-time input and RTMP-family streaming in its protocol documentation. A community example using Ubuntu and systemd illustrates one implementation, but its directory layout, resolution, bitrate, and restart delay are examples rather than universal settings: 24/7 YouTube Stream — Setup & Ops Notes.

2. Get YouTube’s RTMPS destination and protect the key

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and retrieve the stream’s ingest URL and stream key from its stream settings. YouTube’s RTMPS instructions explain that the URL may need to be revealed using the lock control beside the URL field: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.

  2. Use the RTMPS destination where supported. YouTube describes it this way: “You can stream to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.”

  3. Treat the stream key like a password. Do not commit it to a code repository, expose it in public logs, or leave it in a command that may be saved in shared shell history. Store it in a root-readable configuration or environment file, or another secret mechanism appropriate to your host. Rotate the key if it becomes exposed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Match the encoder settings to YouTube and your server

YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); a recommended two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds); and AAC or MP3 audio. Its bitrate guidance depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, YouTube recommends 3 Mbps for 720p30, 8 Mbps for 720p60, 10 Mbps for 1080p30, and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. These are encoder recommendations, not VPS specifications. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions before going live because guidance can change.

Leave network headroom above the video bitrate for audio, protocol overhead, and rate variation, and verify the VPS can sustain the resulting upload. Do not choose a bitrate above either YouTube’s guidance for the selected format or the server’s reliable outbound capacity.

Use stream copy only when the source streams already meet the intended output requirements. Otherwise, explicitly select compatible audio and video streams and encode them. Confirm option names and behavior against the installed FFmpeg version; the exact command depends on the input format and whether re-encoding is needed.

4. Test an FFmpeg command before automating it

Build a command that reads the chosen input in real time, loops it if needed, maps the intended audio and video streams, applies compatible copy or encode settings, and sends an FLV stream to YouTube’s RTMPS endpoint with the stream key. Keep credentials out of any command you publish or log. There is no single safe command for every file: source codecs, audio presence, target resolution, encoder choice, and installed FFmpeg build affect the correct options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with a private or otherwise controlled test in YouTube Live Control Room. Verify actual motion and audio, not just that FFmpeg reports a connection. Confirm the received resolution and frame rate, inspect YouTube’s stream health and messages, and review FFmpeg output for errors.

5. Run FFmpeg as a persistent service

Do not rely on an interactive SSH session to keep the stream alive. Configure a service manager such as systemd to start FFmpeg at boot, restart it after an unexpected exit, and retain logs for diagnosis. Keep the key in a protected configuration file rather than embedding it directly in a publicly visible unit or script. Test the service’s restart behavior deliberately.

A restart policy helps with process exits; it does not correct the cause of repeated exits. Missing media, full storage, insufficient CPU, a bad key, a failed network path, and YouTube-side issues require their own fixes.

6. Confirm reboot and stream health

After the manual test succeeds, restart the VPS and confirm that the service starts, reaches YouTube, and resumes playback. During operation, monitor both FFmpeg’s logs and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and messages. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documents health states, including noData when the live backend has no information about stream health: LiveStreams | YouTube Live Streaming API. YouTube also recommends testing before starting and monitoring stream health during the event.

Common problems and practical fixes

  • FFmpeg exits when SSH disconnects: Run it through systemd or another service manager rather than as a foreground SSH process.

  • The stream never connects: Check the RTMPS URL, key, outbound connectivity, and FFmpeg error output. If the key was exposed, rotate it and update the protected server configuration.

  • Video stutters or the VPS cannot keep up: Check sustained CPU load and the actual network upload rate. Reduce encode complexity, resolution, frame rate, or bitrate as appropriate; confirm the resulting settings still match YouTube’s guidance.

  • YouTube reports no data or unhealthy input: Check that FFmpeg is still running and sending data, then inspect the connection and stream settings in Live Control Room. The API’s noData state means the live backend has no information about stream health; it does not by itself identify the cause.
