How Much Bandwidth Does a 24/7 YouTube Stream Use?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A 24/7 YouTube stream uses about 10.8 decimal GB per day for every 1 Mbps of sustained bitrate. At 10 Mbps, that is roughly 108 GB per day or 3.24 TB in 30 days. These are estimates of the broadcaster’s outgoing data, not viewers’ downloads. Your upload connection also needs enough spare capacity to carry the stream reliably.

Bandwidth can mean data use or connection speed

For the broadcaster, data use is the amount sent over time; upload speed is the rate the internet connection must sustain while the stream is live. The estimates below concern outgoing data sent by the broadcaster. They assume a constant bitrate around the clock and exclude protocol overhead, bitrate variation, outages, and retransmissions, so actual router or ISP totals may differ.

Viewers download video separately, based on the version YouTube delivers to each device, playback quality, and watch time. YouTube transcodes incoming streams into multiple output formats, so audience downloads cannot be calculated from the broadcaster’s upload total alone. YouTube’s live encoder settings and streaming tips provide guidance on encoding and network requirements.

Estimate data use from the stream bitrate

Use the stream’s target bitrate in Mbps as the input. At a constant bitrate, each 1 Mbps running 24 hours uses approximately 10.8 decimal GB per day. Multiply that daily figure by the number of days in your billing period.

YouTube H.264 live setting Recommended bitrate Approx. data per day Approx. data per 30 days
720p30 8 Mbps 86.4 GB 2.59 TB
720p60 8 Mbps 86.4 GB 2.59 TB
1080p30 14 Mbps 151.2 GB 4.54 TB
1080p60 17 Mbps 183.6 GB 5.51 TB
4K/2160p30 42 Mbps 453.6 GB 13.61 TB
4K/2160p60 50 Mbps 540 GB 16.2 TB

The bitrate recommendations are YouTube’s H.264 encoder settings; the data totals are arithmetic estimates derived from those settings, not measured usage figures. YouTube also lists AV1 and H.265/HEVC options with different bitrate ranges. Resolution alone does not determine data use: check the codec, frame rate, and actual target bitrate, then calculate using the bitrate you plan to send. YouTube’s encoder settings table is the reference for its current recommendations.

Calculation

GB/day ≈ bitrate in Mbps × 10.8

The conversion comes from bitrate × 86,400 seconds per day ÷ 8 bits per byte, expressed in decimal gigabytes. For example, 14 Mbps × 10.8 = 151.2 GB per day; for 30 days, 151.2 × 30 = 4,536 GB, or 4.536 decimal TB (shown rounded as 4.54 TB). Binary GiB/TiB units and ISP meter conventions may show different totals.

How much upload speed should you have?

Data volume and upload speed are different things: data volume accumulates over time, while upload speed is the connection’s capacity at a moment. YouTube says the total bitrate sent cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving about 20% headroom. Applying that guidance, a 10 Mbps stream target calls for roughly 12.5 Mbps of available upload capacity if 20% of capacity is reserved as headroom.

  • Test upload speed on the connection that will carry the stream, and account for other people and devices using it.
  • For computer-based streaming, YouTube recommends Ethernet. A wired connection may improve reliability, but it does not reduce data sent at a fixed bitrate and is not stated as mandatory.
  • Monitor stream health while live; a speed test alone does not show how the connection behaves continuously.

YouTube’s streaming tips explain its network guidance.

Why YouTube’s mobile rule of thumb differs

YouTube’s mobile live-stream filming guidance gives a broad rule of thumb of about 10 MB of data per minute. Extrapolated unchanged, that is about 14.4 GB per 24 hours. It is not a bitrate-specific forecast for every stream; for a particular encoder setup, use the actual bitrate calculation above.

Running a 24/7 stream without a home computer

A continuously running stream can send several terabytes in a month at common HD bitrates, and it needs a reliably available upload connection while live. If you prefer not to keep a computer and home connection running, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos in the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the video without requiring your computer to stay on.
