FFmpeg Command for a 24/7 YouTube Loop Stream

To loop a prerecorded file into a YouTube Live stream, put -stream_loop -1 before the input’s -i, pace the file with -re, and send it to the RTMPS ingest address and stream name YouTube provides. The command below is a starting template—not an uptime guarantee: FFmpeg, your computer, network, or YouTube event can still stop or fail.

Starter FFmpeg command for looping a local video

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune zerolatency
  -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k -g 60
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k
  -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST/YOUR_STREAM_NAME"

This is an illustrative template, not a tested command or a universal preset. Replace input.mp4 with your file and the output address with the primary RTMPS ingest address and stream name from your YouTube Live setup. Keep the stream name/key private; do not put a real key in public scripts, screenshots, or logs.

What the loop and pacing flags do

  • -stream_loop -1 asks FFmpeg to repeat the input indefinitely. It is an input option, so place it before the corresponding -i. FFmpeg documents -1 as infinite looping. FFmpeg documentation
  • -re reads a file at its native frame rate (equivalent to -readrate 1), pacing it like a live source rather than sending it as quickly as possible. Do not apply it indiscriminately to an actual live capture input.
  • The encoding options convert the video to H.264 and audio to AAC, then package the output as FLV for the RTMP-family ingest workflow. The output destination is a placeholder, not a real YouTube endpoint.

Adapt the template to your file

  • If the file has no audio stream, remove the audio options or configure audio handling appropriately; otherwise FFmpeg may fail when asked to encode a nonexistent audio stream.
  • If the source codecs and timestamps already meet ingest requirements, stream-copying may be possible, but do not assume it will work cleanly across repeated loops. Validate the result in a rehearsal.
  • The sample’s -g 60 is a 60-frame GOP: at 30 fps, that is a two-second keyframe interval. Use a GOP length that gives the intended interval at your actual frame rate.

Set up YouTube Live and choose the output settings

  1. In YouTube Live setup, configure the stream and obtain its primary RTMPS ingest address and stream name. YouTube’s LiveStreams API describes these as the ingestion address and stream name for a configured stream: YouTube LiveStreams API.
  2. Use RTMPS where available. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval not exceeding four seconds. Check the current guidance before publishing because settings may change: YouTube encoder settings.
  3. Choose resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate together. The following are YouTube’s published recommendations and minimums for these specific codec/resolution/frame-rate combinations; they are not independent benchmark results.
Codec and output YouTube recommended bitrate YouTube minimum bitrate
H.264, 1080p30 14 Mbps 5 Mbps
AV1 or H.265, 1080p30 10 Mbps 4 Mbps
H.264, 720p30 8 Mbps 3 Mbps
AV1 or H.265, 720p30 6 Mbps 2 Mbps

The template’s 4500 kbps video bitrate falls within YouTube’s listed range for 720p30 H.264, but is below its 8 Mbps recommendation. Pick a target your connection can sustain with headroom; YouTube recommends checking upload speed. The template’s -maxrate and -bufsize are example rate-control values, not a substitute for matching the current encoder guidance to your output.

Keep the keyframe interval tied to frame rate

A two-second keyframe interval is the recommended target in YouTube’s guidance. For 30 fps, -g 60 corresponds to two seconds. For another frame rate, adjust the GOP length accordingly, and do not exceed four seconds. The sample is specifically based on 30 fps.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Test the loop before relying on it

  1. Start a rehearsal in YouTube Live Control Room and confirm the encoder connects to the intended event.
  2. Use representative motion and audio, then check YouTube’s stream-health feedback while the test is running. YouTube says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” (YouTube Help, “Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions”.)
  3. Listen and watch across the file’s end-to-start transition. A loop flag repeats the media, but it does not repair an abrupt cut, silence, a black frame, or an audio discontinuity in the source.
  4. Check that the sustained upload bitrate is within your reliable connection capacity. If stream health degrades, lower the output bitrate or resolution and test again.

What a looping command does not provide

-stream_loop -1 only requests repeated media playback. -re paces a file as a live input. Neither flag supervises the FFmpeg process, restores a failed home internet connection, guarantees that YouTube will keep an event active, nor promises a particular live-event duration or archive retention. For unattended operation, plan separately for process monitoring, alerts, and recovery. Reconnect behavior and supervision depend on your deployment and are not established by this command.

Troubleshooting common failures

  • FFmpeg exits immediately: Check the input path and filename, verify the file opens, and ensure the requested audio stream exists if audio encoding options are present.
  • YouTube does not receive a stream: Recheck that you copied the configured event’s RTMPS ingest address and stream name exactly. Never substitute the placeholder or expose the actual stream key.
  • Stream health reports bitrate or connection issues: Compare the chosen codec/resolution/frame-rate target with YouTube’s current guidance, then test a lower bitrate or resolution if your upload connection cannot sustain it.
  • Video repeats with an ugly jump or audio gap: Inspect the source at the loop boundary. The loop option repeats the file; it does not blend or edit its endpoints.
  • Keyframes are too far apart: Set GOP length based on the actual frame rate so the interval is about two seconds and no more than four.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want a PC, FFmpeg process, or home connection to remain on, StreamNeo runs prerecorded uploads as a 24/7 YouTube stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded video rather than broadcasting a camera.
