How to Upload Videos to a VPS for a Continuous YouTube Stream

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Uploading a video to a VPS only puts the file on the server; it does not make it live on YouTube. For a continuous stream, transfer your files to the VPS, configure a YouTube live stream, then run an encoder such as FFmpeg on the VPS to send the video feed to YouTube over RTMPS. You also need to handle looping, process restarts and YouTube’s broadcast lifecycle.

How the VPS-to-YouTube workflow works

A VPS is the remote computer that stores your video and runs the streaming software. The encoder reads the media and maintains an outbound connection to YouTube. The process has three parts:

  1. Transfer: Copy the video file from your computer to storage on the VPS using a file-transfer method available for your host and operating system.
  2. Configure: Create or select a live stream in YouTube Live Control Room and retrieve its RTMPS ingestion URL and stream key.
  3. Broadcast: Run an encoder on the VPS to send audio and video to YouTube. Configure looping and process supervision if the stream is intended to continue unattended.

The exact transfer client, VPS size and process-management setup depend on your operating system, media files, bitrate and hosting provider. The official sources do not prescribe one required transfer client or a universal VPS configuration.

Prepare the video and VPS

Check the media and server capacity

  • Confirm the video is stored on the VPS and that the encoder can read its path and format.
  • Choose a server with enough storage for the files, compute capacity for the selected encoding workload, and sustained outbound bandwidth for the stream.
  • Plan for more than the nominal video bitrate when assessing bandwidth: the server must sustain the stream continuously, and real network performance can vary.

If the video is already encoded in a format YouTube accepts, copying its streams rather than encoding again may reduce CPU use. Whether that works depends on the file’s actual codecs and packaging; verify compatibility before relying on it. If you transcode, the VPS must have enough CPU or supported hardware acceleration to do so at the target resolution and frame rate.

Transfer the files

Use a file-transfer method supported by your VPS host and local system, and place the media in a directory the streaming process can access. The upload is a staging step only: YouTube receives nothing until the encoder begins publishing. For a playlist or a stream that changes videos, make sure every referenced file is present and readable before starting the broadcast.

Create the YouTube live stream and get its key

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream or broadcast you intend to use.
  2. In Stream settings, reveal the RTMPS URL and copy the stream key. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it, commit it to a public script repository or include it in a screenshot.
  3. Use the RTMPS URL shown for that stream rather than assuming a plain RTMP address is interchangeable. Google’s RTMPS ingestion requirements specify the rtmps protocol, a valid server and path, and port 443. RTMPS encrypts the connection to YouTube. Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide also notes that encoder implementations need the server hostname for TLS SNI authentication.

Keep the stream key and URL out of logs and shell history where practical. If you suspect the key has been exposed, replace it in YouTube’s settings and update the encoder configuration.

Configure encoder settings for YouTube

YouTube’s live encoder guidance currently supports RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval and no more than 4 seconds between keyframes. Select a video bitrate that matches the codec, resolution and frame rate rather than choosing a number in isolation. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance lists values by those settings.

Example video setting YouTube-listed bitrate
H.264, 1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps
H.264, 1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps
AV1 or H.265, 1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps
AV1 or H.265, 1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps

These are YouTube’s published recommendations for the specified codec, resolution and frame-rate rows, not a guarantee that a particular VPS or network can sustain them. Start with settings appropriate to your source and server, then check YouTube’s stream health. If the outbound connection cannot reliably maintain the chosen bitrate, reduce the quality or encoding load and test again.

This demonstrates the file-input and real-time publishing pattern; it is not a ready-to-run YouTube command. Replace the example destination with the RTMPS URL and key for your YouTube stream, confirm the server and path, and configure codecs and output settings compatible with YouTube and your source. The command as shown also does not configure looping or restart behavior. See FFmpeg’s documentation for command options.

For YouTube, use the exact RTMPS destination format provided by Live Control Room and follow the encoder’s required syntax for credentials and the stream key. Avoid placing a live key in a publicly readable script. Before leaving the process unattended, verify that the video and audio are present, the connection is stable and YouTube reports a healthy incoming stream.

Keep the stream continuous

Looping the media

A file-to-stream command does not automatically establish the behavior you want after the file ends. Configure the encoder or playback workflow to repeat the intended video or playlist, and test what happens at the end of each item. Check for gaps, abrupt transitions, missing audio and whether the process exits instead of continuing.

Supervise the encoder process

A VPS can stay powered on while its encoder process or network connection fails. Use a process supervisor or another restart mechanism appropriate to the VPS operating system, and monitor logs and YouTube stream health. A restart policy can relaunch a crashed process, but it cannot guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast or fix a bad stream key, unavailable media file or persistent network problem.

Understand YouTube’s broadcast lifecycle

YouTube distinguishes a liveStream resource, which carries audio-video settings, from a liveBroadcast, which represents the event or video. Its API documentation describes a 24/7 use case in which one broadcast remains ongoing while a second broadcast is created and completed on the same stream. This describes API resource behavior; it does not ensure the VPS process or connection will never fail, nor does it establish a universal maximum broadcast duration. See Google’s guide to broadcasts and streams, updated September 14, 2026.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Test before relying on the stream

YouTube advises testing before going live with representative audio and movement, then monitoring stream health and messages during the broadcast. Test the complete chain: media file, encoder, RTMPS connection, stream key, playback loop and restart behavior. A static test image or silent file will not reveal issues that only occur with motion or sound.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom Likely checks and fixes
SSL or TLS connection error Confirm you copied the RTMPS URL and its server and path correctly from Live Control Room. Verify the encoder supports RTMPS, connects using TLS to port 443 where required, and supplies the server hostname for SNI.
Connection times out or is rejected Check the endpoint, protocol, port and stream key. A cleartext RTMP connection sent to an RTMPS endpoint can fail; ensure the VPS network permits the required outbound connection.
Stream health warns about bitrate or instability Compare the encoder output with YouTube’s recommendation for the selected codec, resolution and frame rate. Test the VPS’s sustained upload capacity and reduce output quality or bitrate if needed.
Video stops when the file ends Configure and test looping or playlist behavior; the basic file-publishing example does not set a repeat mode.
Stream stops after an encoder crash Inspect the encoder logs and configure process supervision or a restart policy. Check that the source file remains available and that the stream key and destination are valid.
Picture works but sound is missing or wrong Check that the source has an audio track, that the chosen audio codec is supported, and that a test includes representative sound. Confirm YouTube’s stream health and encoder messages.

Account for copyright and reused content

Having a file on your VPS does not grant permission to stream it. Use videos, music and other material you own or are licensed to broadcast, and review YouTube’s current rules before scheduling a continuous stream. Repeated or minimally changed material may also raise monetization eligibility questions under YouTube’s reused-content policies; copyright permission and monetization eligibility are separate issues. Check the rules that apply to your channel and content rather than assuming that a technically successful stream is automatically compliant.

DIY VPS or a cloud streaming service?
