To keep it available around the clock, you also need a workflow that loops the media and recovers from interruptions; YouTube’s encoder guidance does not guarantee that a single live event can run indefinitely without gaps.
Before you start: check channel eligibility and rights
- Verify the channel and enable live streaming. YouTube requires a verified channel with no livestream restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave setup until the moment you want to launch.
- Use video and audio you have permission to stream. YouTube’s terms place responsibility on the provider to hold the rights needed for live content worldwide, including music rights where applicable. A recording of fire sounds can also be protected. Use your own recording or a license that covers live streaming, worldwide distribution and any replay archive.
- Plan for an encoder and a reliable connection. YouTube supports software encoders running on a computer and standalone encoder hardware. A new computer is not automatically required; use suitable equipment you already have if it can run your chosen workflow reliably.
YouTube may enforce copyright during an active stream, including with a strike, and live content must follow its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Review YouTube’s livestreaming restrictions and its Terms of Service before broadcasting.
Set up the fire stream with an encoder
- Choose the encoder workflow. Use streaming software on a computer or a standalone encoder. For prerecorded ambience, confirm in the specific product documentation that it can play the video and audio continuously, loop them, and recover after a connection or power interruption. YouTube’s general encoder setup does not provide a universal looping control or promise automatic reconnection.
- Create or select a stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Copy the server or stream URL and stream key shown for that stream into the encoder’s corresponding fields. Keep the stream key private: anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your channel. YouTube’s setup steps are in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Load the fire video and crackling audio. Check that the audio is present, at a comfortable level, and does not drift out of sync. If the footage and audio are separate files, verify that your chosen encoder can play them together and repeat them as intended.
- Choose stable encoding settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its settings guidance lists H.264, HEVC and AV1 video support, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Set resolution, codec and bitrate according to what your encoder supports and your real upload capacity; a higher setting is not automatically better if the connection cannot sustain it. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
- Check upload capacity and preview. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the bitrate you configure. Test the actual feed, including both moving video and sound, and inspect the Live Control Room preview before starting. After you go live, watch the stream-health indicators. YouTube’s live streaming tips and encoder settings explain these checks.
- Start the stream and monitor it. Confirm that the Live Control Room shows the expected picture and sound. Keep an eye on connection health, encoder status and audio during the initial run; a successful preview does not prove that the setup will run unattended indefinitely.
What 24/7 means in practice
YouTube Help says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That archive rule is not a promise that one event can stay live indefinitely, nor does it specify how a particular encoder handles event-length limits, restart gaps or recovery after a dropped connection. Check the current behavior of your encoder or hosted service and decide how it handles interruptions before describing the channel as uninterrupted.
For a do-it-yourself computer setup, continuous availability depends on the computer, encoder, power and internet connection staying available, plus the encoder’s own looping and reconnect behavior. A standalone encoder avoids relying on a general-purpose computer, but its looping and recovery capabilities still need product-specific confirmation. In either case, test the whole workflow long enough to catch loop transitions, audio breaks and disconnect handling.

Troubleshooting common problems
- Cannot start a live stream: Check that the channel is verified, livestreaming is enabled and there have been no livestream restrictions in the previous 90 days. If this is the channel’s first stream, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- YouTube receives no video: Confirm that the encoder is using the correct stream URL and key for the selected Live Control Room stream. Check encoder output and the Control Room preview before starting again.
- Video stutters or drops: Compare the configured bitrate with sustained upload capacity and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Reduce the load if the connection cannot maintain the selected settings, then test the actual feed again.
- There is no sound or it stops at the loop point: Check the selected audio source, playback levels and repeat behavior in the encoder. Test a complete loop before relying on unattended playback.
- The stream ends or returns after an interruption: Check the encoder or service’s documented reconnect and event-restart behavior. YouTube’s under-12-hour archive guidance alone does not establish how an individual workflow will resume or whether viewers will see a gap.
- A copyright warning or interruption appears: Review the claim or restriction and confirm that your license covers the specific recording, live use, worldwide audience and replay. Replace material for which you cannot establish the necessary rights.
