The best free way to keep prerecorded video streaming on YouTube is OBS Studio running on a computer you already own. Add your video as a looping media source, connect OBS to a livestream in YouTube Studio with its stream URL and key, and leave the computer and internet connection running. OBS is free; the tradeoff is that this is a local setup, not an unattended cloud service.
What you need before going live
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube requires the channel to be verified, to have no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and the streamer to be at least 16 years old. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your planned start. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements and encoder setup instructions.
- A computer running OBS Studio and access to the prerecorded files you have rights to stream. YouTube lists OBS as free encoder software; OBS Project describes it as free and open source for Windows, Mac, and Linux: YouTube’s encoder directory and OBS Project.
- A stable internet connection and power for the entire broadcast. Because OBS encodes locally, sleep mode, a restart, power loss, software crash, or lost connection can interrupt the stream.
Set up the YouTube livestream and OBS
- Enable live streaming early. In YouTube Studio, follow the live-streaming activation flow. If this is the channel’s first time, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- Create the broadcast. Open YouTube Studio, go to Create > Go live, then create or schedule a stream in Live Control Room. Choose the encoder workflow.
- Copy the connection details. In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS under Settings > Stream. Treat the key like a password: anyone who gets it may be able to broadcast to your channel. YouTube’s encoder guide documents this connection sequence: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Add the prerecorded video in OBS. In the relevant scene, add a Media Source, select the video file, and enable looping if you want that file to repeat. For multiple files, add sources or organize a playlist using OBS’s available source and playlist controls; check the result in the preview before going live. The exact playlist behavior can depend on how you configure OBS, so verify transitions rather than assuming they will be seamless.
- Start the encoder and verify the preview. Start streaming in OBS. Wait for the preview and stream health indicators in Live Control Room, then use its go-live controls if the broadcast is scheduled or awaiting confirmation. Keep OBS open and monitor the broadcast.
There is no required special hardware encoder for this free approach if you already have a suitable computer. YouTube lists hardware encoders as another category, but buying one is optional, not part of the no-cost route.
What 24/7 means in practice
A local OBS stream depends on the computer, the source files, power, and internet connection remaining available. Configure the computer so it does not sleep during the broadcast, prevent avoidable restarts, and check that the media source keeps playing. This reduces predictable interruptions; it does not guarantee uninterrupted streaming.
YouTube’s documented automatic archive rule is limited: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” A continuous 24-hour broadcast exceeds that threshold, so do not assume YouTube will save a complete replay of one unbroken 24/7 stream. Copyright, monetization, and watch hours
Use content you have the right to livestream
YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. A detected match can replace the stream with a placeholder; if the material remains, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the broadcast. Even licensed material can be interrupted unless the rights holder has allowlisted your channel through Content ID. Use original video and audio where possible, or confirm livestream rights and any necessary allowlisting before broadcasting. YouTube’s live-streaming copyright guidance.
A live view is not automatically a qualifying watch hour
For YouTube Partner Program watch-hour thresholds, qualifying public long-form videos and archived livestreams count under the stated rules; unlisted, deleted, or non-archived livestreams do not. YPP eligibility also depends on regional availability, policy compliance, and channel review, so a 24/7 stream does not guarantee eligibility or earnings. Repetition can be a monetization problem even with permission
On July 15, 2025, YouTube clarified that its “repetitious content” policy was renamed “inauthentic content”; repetitive or mass-produced content remains ineligible under the existing monetization policy, which applies to livestreams. Reused-content review is separate from copyright: permission to use someone else’s material does not by itself guarantee YPP eligibility. If you do not want to keep a PC running
YouTube’s encoder directory names Gyre for 24/7 prerecorded video and Upstream for 24/7 cloud streaming. Those are cloud-service alternatives, not a verified free recommendation here; check each provider’s current plan terms and India availability before choosing one.
