You can automate a 24/7 YouTube stream by running FFmpeg on a computer or server that stays online, sending its output to YouTube’s live ingest, and monitoring the process so it can be recovered if it stops. Use the RTMPS endpoint and stream key shown in YouTube Studio, choose encoding settings your actual upload connection can sustain, and arrange a separate recording if you need a complete archive: YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all.
How the 24/7 FFmpeg workflow fits together
FFmpeg reads a video file or playlist, prepares a continuous audio-video feed, and sends it to YouTube. YouTube’s live ingest receives that feed and distributes it to viewers. The host—your own computer or a server—must remain online and have access to the media for the stream to continue.
There are two YouTube objects to keep distinct: the stream configuration supplies ingest details such as the primary and backup URLs, resolution, and frame rate; the broadcast is the live event viewers watch. YouTube’s API describes this stream resource and its ingest details in the LiveStreams documentation.
Check YouTube eligibility and content rights first
Enable live streaming
YouTube requires the channel to be verified and to have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. The account and stream must also comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements before building an unattended setup.

Clear every video and audio right
For a 24/7 gaming, music, or other prerecorded stream, make sure you have the rights required to stream the material worldwide, including music rights where applicable. Owning a game, video, or audio file—or having a copy of it—does not itself establish streaming rights. YouTube’s livestream terms make the content provider responsible for the necessary rights and applicable legal requirements.
Choose a host that can stay online
Run FFmpeg locally
A local PC gives you direct access to files and controls, but it and its internet connection must stay available. For an India-based setup, test the sustained upload speed and stability from the actual location and at the intended stream settings. Power continuity, network interruptions, and latency to the selected ingest endpoint are also variables to check for your own setup. The available official guidance does not establish a universal Indian ISP, bandwidth threshold, power-backup requirement, or hosting recommendation.
Run FFmpeg on a cloud virtual machine
A VM moves the process and media off your home computer, but you still need to configure and operate the encoder, storage, monitoring, and recovery. Compare providers using current regional availability, network performance, storage needs, and total cost; there is no India-specific price or reliability comparison established here.
Know when a managed pipeline is different
Google Cloud’s Live Stream API is a managed pipeline that accepts RTMP or SRT input and produces HLS or DASH output. Its documentation uses FFmpeg as an example input sender. That architecture is not required for a direct FFmpeg-to-YouTube stream; it adds a managed processing stage and a different output path.

Use the current RTMPS details from YouTube Studio

Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule a live stream to obtain its current ingest details.

Copy the RTMPS server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Keep the key secret: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your channel.

Configure FFmpeg to publish to the displayed RTMPS endpoint. Do not reuse an endpoint or key from an old tutorial without confirming it in YouTube Studio.

Test the connection and confirm that YouTube’s Live Control Room receives the feed and reports a healthy stream before relying on unattended operation.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP. The official RTMPS ingestion guide notes that a client connecting with cleartext RTMP to an endpoint expecting RTMPS may connect without receiving a sensible response. Protocol options are documented by FFmpeg; use the protocol and endpoint YouTube provides.
Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate
YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations below are platform guidance, not guarantees that an internet connection can sustain them. YouTube recommends testing your actual stream and choosing a quality that remains reliable over your upload connection.

These figures are from YouTube’s encoder settings guidance, accessed in 2026. Its page also publishes minimum H.264 values and separate recommendations for AV1 and H.265/HEVC; consult that current table if you use those codecs rather than applying the H.264 figures to them.
Set rate control, keyframes, and audio

Keyframes: set a 2-second interval; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.

Video codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 among its supported options.

Audio codec: YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists AAC or MP3.
Run an upload speed test, then test with audio and motion similar to the material you will stream. YouTube automatically detects encoder settings in Live Control Room and transcodes the live feed for viewer playback; you should still check stream health during operation.

Make the process unattended—and plan for recovery
A command that sends one file to YouTube is not, by itself, a complete 24/7 operating system. Your implementation must account for what happens when a file ends, the network drops, FFmpeg exits, storage fills, or the host restarts. The following are general engineering considerations, not a tested or guaranteed configuration:

Media sequencing: decide how the next file starts, how playlists advance, and what happens if a source file is missing or unreadable.

Process supervision: use a service manager or watchdog appropriate to your operating system to detect a stopped process and restart it. Test the restart behavior rather than assuming it works.

Connection recovery: test what happens after a brief internet outage and after a longer disconnection. Confirm that YouTube receives a healthy feed again and that the broadcast is still in the expected state.

Monitoring: check FFmpeg logs, host health, free disk space, and YouTube Live Control Room stream health. A process that is running does not necessarily mean viewers are receiving a usable stream.

Key security: keep the stream key out of public scripts, logs, and repositories. Restrict access to the account and host where it is stored.

Capacity and continuity: measure sustained upload at the stream’s bitrate and consider how your own host, power, and network behave during interruptions. No single upload threshold or power setup is established for all locations in India.
Keep a separate recording if the full stream matters
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A 24/7 operator who needs a complete recording should make and verify a separate local archive rather than treating YouTube’s replay as a guaranteed backup. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Local recording requires enough storage for the intended retention period and a plan for disk rotation or off-host backup. Monitor free space: an archive that silently stops when a disk fills is not a complete recording. Decide whether recording and streaming should continue independently if one encounters an error.
Monetization is separate from automation
Running a continuous stream does not by itself make a channel eligible for the YouTube Partner Program or guarantee acceptance. YouTube’s current overview describes a full eligibility path of 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the preceding 12 months or 10 million qualified public Shorts views in the preceding 90 days, alongside other requirements and review. Watch hours from livestreams that are unlisted, deleted, or not converted to VOD do not count toward that watch-hour threshold. See YouTube Partner Program eligibility.
For eligible channels, YouTube lists live-stream ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and memberships as possible monetization features. Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve; see YouTube’s live monetization guidance.

YouTube does not receive a usable feed

Confirm the endpoint and stream key match the current stream in YouTube Studio.

Check that FFmpeg is using RTMPS when the displayed endpoint expects it; cleartext RTMP may not receive a sensible response from an RTMPS endpoint.

Review the FFmpeg output and YouTube’s Live Control Room health indicators for connection or encoder errors.
The stream drops or becomes unstable

Measure sustained upload speed from the actual host and test at the selected bitrate. If the connection cannot reliably sustain it, reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate and test again.

Inspect host and network logs, then test the recovery path after a controlled interruption. Do not assume an encoder reconnect option alone will restore the YouTube broadcast correctly.

The feed ends when a video finishes

Check whether the media input or playlist has ended and whether your sequencing logic advances to another valid file. Test transitions and missing-file behavior before leaving the stream unattended.

Use process supervision and monitoring to detect a stopped encoder, then verify recovery in YouTube Studio.
The replay is incomplete or the recording stops

For a stream longer than 12 hours, do not rely on YouTube to create a complete archive. Record separately if the full material matters.

Check local disk capacity, permissions, and the recording process; confirm that the archive is readable and covers the expected period.
