In OBS, open Settings → Advanced and enable Automatically Reconnect; then set a retry count and initial delay that suit your setup. This makes OBS retry its output connection, but it does not guarantee that YouTube will keep the same live event open through every outage—or reopen one YouTube has already ended. Test the full path, including the Live Control Room and viewer page, before relying on it unattended.
What OBS automatic reconnect does—and what it does not
OBS automatic reconnect retries the encoder’s connection to its streaming output. It can help after a brief interruption in the network path or streaming connection. OBS’s output API specifies a maximum retry count and a starting wait duration; the wait doubles with each retry. The exact settings in your OBS version matter, so do not assume a universal retry count or delay. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide and output API documentation describe the relevant behavior.
Reconnect is not the same as restarting every part of a 24/7 broadcast. It cannot restart a computer or OBS process that has crashed, restore power, repair an ISP outage, or guarantee YouTube will preserve an event after an extended disconnect. YouTube’s encoder controls separately govern whether an encoder can start or stop an event. Treat event continuity as something to verify in your own configuration, not a promise of the reconnect checkbox. YouTube’s live stream settings guidance explains auto-start and auto-stop controls; its encoder setup guidance covers sending and ending an encoder stream.
Set up OBS and YouTube for reconnection
- Configure OBS retries. In OBS, go to Settings → Advanced, find the Network section, and enable Automatically Reconnect. Choose the retry count and initial retry delay for the outage window you are prepared to tolerate. Because retry waits grow by doubling, attempts will not necessarily happen at fixed intervals. Labels and available options can vary by OBS version.
- Check YouTube’s event controls. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and review the stream’s auto-start and auto-stop settings. Enable auto-start if you want the encoder to be able to start the event. These settings do not fix a failed connection; they determine whether the encoder can control event start or stop. YouTube says reusing stream settings copies these selections.
- Verify the encoder destination and key. Confirm OBS is configured for the intended YouTube service, server URL, and stream key. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses the stream URL and key. If OBS reports a startup error, check Live Control Room for the current key and update OBS if needed; YouTube lists obtaining and applying the current key as a recovery step. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and YouTube’s live streaming troubleshooting guidance.
- Test a real interruption. Start a private or unlisted test stream if appropriate for your channel, briefly interrupt the network, and observe OBS, Live Control Room, and the watch page. Confirm whether OBS reconnects, whether YouTube still considers the event live, and what a viewer sees. Restore the connection promptly; do not assume a successful OBS reconnect means the event remained available throughout.
Test a backup encoder for higher availability
If a short reconnect window is not enough, a backup encoder is a separate layer of protection. YouTube recommends testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then confirming that the player rolls over to the backup. Monitor stream health during the test and verify what viewers see; merely configuring a backup does not prove the handoff works. Follow YouTube’s encoder guidance for the workflow and available stream configuration.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A backup encoder can address failure of the primary encoder or its connection only if the backup itself is ready, has the correct configuration, and can reach YouTube. It is distinct from OBS retrying the same output. Neither mechanism can be treated as a guarantee that YouTube will reopen an event it has already ended.
Troubleshoot repeated disconnects
- OBS retries, but the connection drops again: OBS says dropped frames can indicate an unstable network path or insufficient upload capacity. Check upload capacity while streaming and investigate the router, modem, network equipment, VPN, or security software that may interfere. See OBS connection troubleshooting.
- Wi-Fi is unstable: Try a wired Ethernet connection where practical. A cable may help with unreliable Wi-Fi, but it cannot fix an ISP outage or bring back an event YouTube has ended.
- OBS cannot start sending to YouTube: Check that the server URL and stream key are current and assigned to the intended event. If YouTube reports a third-party encoder startup error, retrieve the current stream key in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
- OBS reconnects but viewers do not see the expected event: Check Live Control Room to see whether YouTube still considers the event live, and inspect the viewer page. Encoder output recovery and YouTube event continuity are separate behaviors; if the event has ended, reconnect settings alone do not establish that it can be reopened as the same event.
- The whole stream process or computer stopped: OBS’s output retry cannot restart a crashed process or restore power. Address the underlying computer, power, or process failure, and consider a tested backup encoder if continuous operation is important.
Plan for continuous streams, not just brief interruptions
Separate three failure points when planning recovery: the local encoder or source process can stop, the network path can fail, or the YouTube event can end. OBS automatic reconnect addresses retries for the encoder’s output connection. A backup encoder, reliable power, and a stable network address other failure modes; YouTube’s event controls determine whether the encoder can start or stop the event. Test the combination you intend to use rather than assuming one setting covers all three.

YouTube’s encoder setup page states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish what happens to an uninterrupted stream beyond 12 hours, so do not rely on it to predict archiving for a continuous 24/7 broadcast. Check the current YouTube guidance and your channel’s Live Control Room for your use case.
