Short answer: A Raspberry Pi can be a sensible low-cost choice if you already own one, have dependable home power and broadband, and can monitor it. A VPS moves the stream off your home connection and power supply, but its monthly fee is only part of the cost: you also need enough outbound data, Linux administration and a plan for recovery. For a prerecorded loop, first establish whether your setup will relay an already-encoded video or re-encode it; those are very different workloads.
Choose by the failure you can tolerate—and the work you want to do
Neither a Raspberry Pi nor a cheap VPS guarantees an uninterrupted YouTube broadcast. A Pi depends on your home electricity, router, broadband upload and the health of the device. A VPS removes your home connection from the path, but it still depends on the provider, server configuration, transfer allowance and recovery setup. Either can work for 24/7 streaming if you test the actual workload and prepare for interruptions.
| Option | Where the stream runs | Best fit | Main cost or risk to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Raspberry Pi | At home, on your own network | You already own suitable equipment, want local control and can keep power and broadband available | Measured electricity use, home upload stability, storage and any backup-power needs |
| VPS | On a rented server in a data centre | You want to avoid dependence on home power and upload, and are comfortable administering Linux | Monthly transfer allowance, server and storage charges, maintenance time and recovery configuration |
| Managed cloud service | On the service provider’s cloud infrastructure | You want to avoid maintaining a server yourself | Recurring fee, storage or quality limits, and the provider’s stated—not independently verified—features |
If the stream must continue through a home power cut or broadband outage, a Pi does not solve that problem. If you choose a VPS to reduce home-network dependence, check the server’s included outbound transfer before signing up; a low server price is not enough to judge cost.
First decide what the device has to do
Relaying an already-encoded file
If a video is already in a format compatible with your streaming workflow, the Pi or VPS can send it without re-encoding. That reduces processing demand, but does not remove the need for continuous outbound bandwidth, access to the media file, a running process, useful logs and a way to restart after a failure. Confirm that the source file’s video and audio formats work with the selected sending method before building a 24/7 setup.

Transcoding or encoding in real time
Re-encoding means decoding the source and creating a new live output. That adds a sustained processing workload; a board’s general performance claim does not establish that it can encode your particular resolution and frame rate reliably. Raspberry Pi’s product page describes the Pi 5 as 2–3× the speed of the previous generation, but that is not a benchmark of continuous YouTube encoding. Do not assume a particular Pi or low-cost VPS can transcode your media at a target quality without testing that exact workload.
Capturing a live camera or other input
A prerecorded loop and a live camera feed are not the same job. This comparison focuses on sending prerecorded video; a capture setup adds its own input-device and software requirements. Identify the source before estimating processing, storage or recovery needs.

Use YouTube’s encoder settings as the starting point
YouTube’s current encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, recommends H.264 bitrates of 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. It also lists 3 Mbps for 720p30, 8 Mbps for 720p60 and 4 Mbps for 480p30. These are recommended encoder bitrates, not guarantees that an internet connection with exactly that upload speed will run reliably. Choose a quality your connection can sustain with headroom, and test from the location where the sender will run.
- YouTube recommends RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a 2-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed 4 seconds.
- The listed video codecs are H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1; listed audio codecs are AAC and MP3. Confirm that the source and sending software are compatible with the stream you configure.
- YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Treat the stream key as a credential: keep it out of public scripts, screenshots and logs, and restrict access to any file or configuration where it is stored.
- YouTube transcodes live streams into viewer playback formats, but that does not send your stream for you. Your Pi or VPS must still maintain its upstream connection to YouTube.
Before committing to a resolution, run an upload-speed test from the Pi’s home network or from the VPS environment where possible. YouTube’s guidance is to test with representative audio and movement and monitor stream health. A static test clip alone may not expose issues that appear during your actual loop.

Bandwidth can decide whether a cheap VPS stays cheap
At a constant 5 Mbps, a 30-day month carries about 1.62 TB of stream payload: 5,000,000 bits per second × 2,592,000 seconds ÷ 8. This is a calculated estimate before protocol overhead, not a measured or provider-published figure. At 10 Mbps, the payload estimate doubles. Check whether outbound transfer is included, metered or subject to overage charges or throttling; also confirm how the provider counts traffic and what happens if you exceed the allowance.
For context only, the NIC webcast page cites 2–4 Mbps of dedicated bandwidth per stream for the webcast arrangements it describes. That is general government webcast guidance, not a substitute for YouTube’s resolution- and codec-specific recommendations.

What each option asks you to set up and maintain
Raspberry Pi: a home-operated stream
- Check the home connection. Use a wired Ethernet connection where practical, then test upload speed and stability at the location and time the stream will run. Consider whether other home traffic could compete for upload capacity.
- Prepare the media and storage. Keep the prerecorded files on storage accessible to the Pi and confirm there is room for the media and any logs your setup retains. Use a suitable power supply; consider cooling if your tested workload needs it.
- Choose relay or transcode. Prefer sending a compatible encoded file without re-encoding when that meets your needs. If you plan to transcode, test the exact file, output resolution and frame rate continuously rather than inferring capacity from general hardware specifications.
- Configure the YouTube output. Set the chosen resolution, codec, bitrate, CBR and keyframe interval in the sending software. Use RTMPS where supported and store the stream key privately.
- Make it unattended. Configure the sending process to start after reboot and restart if it exits, and retain enough logs to diagnose failures without writing the stream key into them. A restart policy helps with a process crash; it cannot restore power or broadband.
- Test failure and recovery. Run the stream with representative audio and movement, monitor YouTube stream health and device temperature, and test what happens after a reboot and a network interruption before relying on the setup.
A UPS is conditional, not a universal requirement: it may help if short household outages are common, but its suitability depends on the equipment and the backup time you need. Measure the Pi’s power draw at the wall and apply your own electricity tariff when estimating operating cost; there is no reliable India-wide consumption or electricity-cost figure to use for every setup.
VPS: a remotely operated stream
- Select location and plan. Choose a data-centre region appropriate for your workflow, and verify the current server price, tax, storage and outbound transfer terms. Do not assume a plan’s bandwidth allowance is enough merely because its monthly fee is low.
- Prepare the server and media. Install or configure the software needed to send the video, then upload or fetch the media. Account for media-transfer time, storage and backups as well as the continuous stream.
- Configure the sender. Set the same YouTube-appropriate output parameters you would use on a Pi. A VPS does not remove the need to use a compatible stream format or sustain the selected bitrate.
- Protect credentials. Store the YouTube stream key so it is not exposed in public scripts, shared files or logs. Limit access to the account and server configuration that contains it.
- Automate and observe. Configure a service manager or equivalent restart policy, rotate logs and monitor the stream and transfer usage. An automatic process restart is not the same as confirming that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
- Test before depending on it. Verify the complete media path and continuous output, then test server or process restart behavior. Check how you will notice a failure and whether your recovery plan can reconnect to YouTube.
A VPS removes your home computer and home upload connection from the stream path, not every possible interruption. The provider’s network and server, your configuration, available transfer and recovery logic remain part of the system. Unlike a managed streaming service, a DIY VPS also leaves installation, key protection, updates, monitoring and failure handling to you.

Estimate the full cost, not just the device or server price
| Option | Include in your estimate | What changes the result |
|---|---|---|
| Raspberry Pi | Board and needed peripherals, spread over your chosen ownership period; measured electricity use × local tariff × hours per month; any additional internet, storage, cooling or backup power | If you already own the Pi, treat its purchase price as sunk for the forward monthly comparison, while still considering replacement and peripheral costs. |
| VPS | Server fee, applicable taxes and currency conversion, adequate outbound transfer, storage and media transfer, backups or monitoring tools, and your maintenance time | Transfer overages, throttling, storage needs and time spent operating Linux can outweigh a low advertised server fee. |
| Managed service | Stream or channel fee, storage and quality or destination add-ons, payment or tax costs, and your upload and configuration time | Features, service limits and pricing are provider-specific; check the current plan terms and what is included. |
For a concrete India-facing vendor example, NivoHost’s plan page, accessed in 2026, listed an entry offer at ₹699/month for one stream at 360p and 10 fps, with 2 CPU cores, 4 GB RAM, 40 GB SSD and 20 TB bandwidth. The same page listed ₹999/month for 480p at 15 fps and 4 CPU cores, and ₹1,799/month for a 720p/30 plan. These are vendor-listed offers, not guaranteed current charges or an independent endorsement; confirm price, tax, transfer, quality and whether the product is a VPS or managed streaming package before relying on them.
Those listed transfer terms matter: the calculated 1.62 TB payload for a constant 5 Mbps stream in a 30-day month is well below 20 TB, but that comparison does not establish that a plan is suitable. Confirm how the provider counts outbound traffic, account for overhead and other use, and verify the plan’s product type and stream-quality limits.
How to choose for a channel in India
- Choose a Pi when you already own one, want local control, can provide stable power and upload, and are prepared to monitor and recover the stream.
- Choose a VPS when removing home power and broadband from the stream path matters more than avoiding server administration, and the plan’s region, transfer and total cost work for your stream.
- Choose managed cloud streaming if you prefer not to maintain Linux services and can justify a recurring service fee. Compare the provider’s current terms rather than assuming a particular quality, storage allowance or recovery feature.
For example, StreamSetu’s pricing page describes cloud-based 24/7 streaming, automatic reconnect and multichannel output. It lists plans starting at US$5/month per channel and storage starting at US$0.10/GB/month, while stating that pricing varies by quality and exact rates appear in its dashboard. Those are vendor statements and listed USD starting prices, not independently tested service claims; verify current rates and included features before deciding.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a prerecorded YouTube loop rather than a server-administration project, StreamNeo is a managed alternative: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not go live from a camera and streams to YouTube only.

Common failure points and what to check
- YouTube reports a poor or unstable stream: Check the sender’s actual upload stability, competing network traffic and selected bitrate. Retest at the intended quality and allow dependable headroom instead of treating the recommended bitrate as a guaranteed minimum connection speed.
- The process stops after a reboot: Check that the sending service is configured to start at boot and that its logs show why it exited. Test the restart path instead of assuming it works.
- The stream does not return after an internet interruption: Verify reconnect behavior and the YouTube stream key configuration. A process restart or reconnect policy may help, but neither can fix an unavailable home ISP or provider network.
- A Pi slows down or becomes unstable during a transcode: Check temperature and sustained resource load, then test the exact resolution and frame rate. A general performance claim does not substitute for a workload-specific test; consider relaying a compatible encoded file if re-encoding is unnecessary.
- A VPS bill rises or traffic is limited: Review outbound transfer accounting and usage, then compare the plan’s allowance with your bitrate and continuous run time. Include overhead and non-stream traffic in the estimate.
- The stream disconnects after a credential change: Check the configured stream key through the appropriate private YouTube account workflow. Do not paste credentials into public support posts, shared scripts or logs.
Copyright and channel-policy checks matter for loops
Only stream video and audio you have the rights to use. A video being prerecorded, looped or already on your channel does not by itself establish permission to broadcast it continuously. Check the rights for music, gameplay footage, clips and any other third-party material, and review YouTube’s current live-streaming and channel policies before scheduling a 24/7 loop. Copyright permission and channel eligibility are separate questions; a technically healthy stream does not settle either one.
