How to Fix Pixelation on a YouTube Live Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Find where the picture first breaks up: in your encoder preview, on the way to YouTube, or only in one viewer’s playback. That distinction determines the fix. Check the source and encoder first, test your outbound connection next, then match codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to YouTube’s current settings guidance.

1. Check whether the encoder preview is already pixelated

Look at the preview in your streaming encoder, and, if available, compare it with a local recording or archive. If the picture is poor before it reaches YouTube, changing YouTube playback quality will not repair it: the problem is likely in the camera or other video source, the encoder, or the computer running it.

  • Inspect the camera, capture card, game capture, or other source for a low-quality or unstable input.
  • Check the encoder’s error messages and CPU load. Heavy processing or encoder errors can interfere with the outgoing picture.
  • Review a local recording, if you made one. If it is also pixelated, the fault is upstream of YouTube playback.

YouTube Help’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance notes that poor video or audio can originate in the sources routed to the encoder.

2. If the preview looks good, test the connection to YouTube

A clean encoder preview with a degraded stream points toward delivery: the connection sending video from your encoder to YouTube may not be sustaining the selected settings. Run an upload-speed test and check the live dashboard for stream-health warnings or connection errors. A single speed-test result is only a snapshot; it does not establish that upload capacity will remain stable throughout an event.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

If the connection is unreliable, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance advises creators with connection issues to contact their internet service provider. If YouTube reports that your connection cannot support the selected resolution, its live-stream error guidance recommends considering a lower resolution. Retest at the lower setting before relying on it for a live event.

3. Match bitrate to codec, resolution, and frame rate

There is no single bitrate that fixes pixelation for every stream. The appropriate setting depends on the video codec, ingest resolution, and frame rate, as well as what your connection can sustain reliably. YouTube’s current encoder settings table gives these H.264 examples:

Ingest setting Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps

These are YouTube’s ingest recommendations, not a guarantee of a particular picture quality. Use the official table for your codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than applying either example to a different setup. If your connection cannot reliably carry the bitrate for your chosen resolution, lower the resolution and test again; a nominally higher setting that drops or degrades is not an improvement.

YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers, but that does not clean up a poor source or make an unstable incoming stream reliable.

4. Check encoder settings that affect stream stability

In your encoder, compare the actual output settings with YouTube’s current live encoder recommendations:

  • Bitrate control: use CBR (constant bitrate), as YouTube recommends.
  • Keyframe interval: set two seconds; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Codec: for RTMP/RTMPS video, YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 as supported codecs. Confirm the official table’s bitrate guidance for the codec and video settings you choose.
  • Software and system load: update your encoder and check its error messages and CPU load while streaming.

Exact menu names vary by encoder, so use its output or streaming settings rather than assuming one universal UI path. Before an important broadcast, test with motion and audio representative of the event, then watch YouTube’s stream-health messages while live.

5. Find out whether the issue affects every viewer

Ask viewers on different connections whether they see the same degradation. Reports from multiple viewers make an encoder or outgoing-stream issue more likely. If only one person reports blur, have that viewer check their internet connection, playback quality, screen size, and browser before changing your encoder settings.

YouTube playback quality can change with viewing conditions, and viewers can select it manually in the player. The quality settings guide for computers explains how to change playback quality. A single viewer’s report does not by itself prove that the stream you are sending is pixelated.
