Start with the exact stream-health message in YouTube Live Control Room, then compare it with FFmpeg’s connection log and output summary. A timeout or “no data” points first to the ingest URL, protocol, stream key, or VPS network path; a stream that reaches YouTube but reports incorrect settings calls for checking codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframes, or audio. There is no single fix for every rejection.
1. Capture the error before changing FFmpeg
In YouTube Live Control Room, read the message next to the stream-health indicator and note whether YouTube detects incoming data. YouTube’s diagnostics distinguish problems involving audio, video, bitrate, frame rate, codec, keyframe frequency, and primary or backup stream configuration. Its message list includes incorrect settings, unsupported audio codecs, and keyframe mismatches (YouTube Help: Live streaming error messages; YouTube Live API: stream health status).
Save the FFmpeg log lines around connection and output initialization, along with the output stream summary. Redact the stream key before sharing logs or a command: it is a credential that can let someone else publish to your stream.
2. Check the endpoint, protocol, and stream key
Compare the server URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room with the destination FFmpeg uses. Treat the URL and key as separate values when building the destination; check for a copied, old, truncated, or mistyped key. Do not post the complete destination if it contains the key.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension to RTMP. YouTube also documents RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and DASH ingest, but those protocols have different capabilities and are not interchangeable in every workflow. For the conventional FFmpeg FLV push, verify that the endpoint, protocol, and container match the instructions for the ingest mode you selected (YouTube encoder settings; YouTube ingestion protocol comparison).
A protocol mismatch can appear as a timeout rather than a clear rejection. Google’s RTMPS guide notes that a client may connect to a YouTube server but time out without a sensible response if it sends cleartext RTMP where the server expects RTMPS (YouTube RTMPS ingestion guide).

FFmpeg’s documentation illustrates the general shape of an FLV live push as ffmpeg -re -i input -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystream. This is a protocol example, not a ready-to-use YouTube command: substitute the current endpoint and key from Live Control Room, and ensure your output settings fit your encoder and YouTube’s requirements (FFmpeg RTMP protocol documentation).
3. Match the video output to YouTube’s settings
Read FFmpeg’s output summary and compare it with the specific issue shown by YouTube. Check that the selected ingest mode supports your video codec, that resolution and frame rate are intentional, that rate control is constant bitrate (CBR), and that the target bitrate is within YouTube’s recommendation for that codec, resolution, and frame rate. There is no one bitrate that fits every stream.

For H.264, YouTube’s current encoder-settings page recommends the following minimum and recommended bitrates. The page does not state a publication year, so these should be treated as its current page recommendations, not as a dated guarantee:

YouTube’s page also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1 and gives recommendations that vary by codec and output mode. Consult that table for your exact combination rather than applying the H.264 figures above to another codec (YouTube encoder settings and bitrate table).

Keyframes and GOP
YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. If Live Control Room reports a GOP or keyframe issue, check the interval and whether the encoder is using an open GOP: YouTube’s health documentation says its ingest does not support open GOP. Configure a closed GOP using the option supported by the encoder you actually use; exact FFmpeg option syntax varies by encoder and build (YouTube encoder settings; YouTube stream health status).

YouTube lists AAC and MP3 as supported audio codecs. Its current settings page recommends a 44.1 kHz sample rate for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1 surround; 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only with AAC. If the health message reports unsupported audio or an audio configuration issue, compare the FFmpeg output codec, sample rate, and channel layout with those requirements. Otherwise, avoid changing audio flags unrelated to the reported problem (YouTube encoder settings).

5. Separate a VPS connection problem from invalid media
If YouTube reports no incoming data, or FFmpeg times out before publishing, check whether the VPS can reach the selected ingest host using the required protocol and port. Confirm the destination is current and that the protocol is RTMPS if the endpoint expects it. A protocol mismatch is one documented explanation for a timeout; the symptom alone does not establish whether a particular VPS has a firewall, DNS, routing, or provider egress issue.
If you need help from your VPS provider, share the provider and region, destination host and port with secrets removed, and the relevant connection error. Do not share your stream key. If YouTube receives data but flags invalid media settings, focus on the health category and FFmpeg’s output properties rather than changing VPS hardware or adding unrelated retry flags.
6. Retest one change at a time
- Record the current YouTube health message and relevant FFmpeg log lines, with the stream key redacted.
- Change the setting tied to that message—for example, the endpoint/protocol for a connection timeout or the keyframe interval for a keyframe warning.
- Start a test stream and check whether YouTube detects it and whether the reported health issue changes.
- Before the actual broadcast, test audio and representative movement, then monitor stream health during the event. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring the stream (YouTube encoder settings).
