Can a Raspberry Pi 4B Stream Prerecorded Videos to YouTube 24/7 in India?

The Raspberry Pi 4B can send a prerecorded feed to YouTube Live, but sustained 24/7 operation needs testing, reliable power and internet, recovery planning, and proper content rights.

Yes, a Raspberry Pi 4 Model B can be used to send a prerecorded video feed to YouTube Live, but a reliable 24/7 stream is not guaranteed by the board’s specifications. Raspberry Pi lists H.264 encoding up to 1080p30 for the Pi 4B, which makes a modest 1080p30 stream plausible. You will need to configure an encoder, keep the Pi and network running, and plan for interruptions and recovery.

For Indian channels, the same YouTube and hardware constraints apply as elsewhere. YouTube’s terms require compliance with laws and regulatory requirements in the territory, but the official sources cited here do not establish which India-specific permissions, if any, apply to your particular content and setup.

What the Pi 4B can—and cannot—do

The Raspberry Pi 4 Model B product brief lists H.264 video encoding up to 1080p30 and Gigabit Ethernet. That is the relevant encoding ceiling for a Pi-based live feed: target no higher than 1080p30, and test the actual files and encoder you intend to use. The specification does not establish that every software encoder, video format, cooling arrangement, or network connection will sustain uninterrupted streaming around the clock.

The brief also lists H.265 4Kp60, but that is a decoding capability, not a claim that the Pi 4B can encode a 4K live stream. Do not confuse playback support with live encoding capacity. See the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B product brief.

What you need before going live

  • A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. Your channel must be verified and must not have a live-stream restriction within the previous 90 days. First-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to become available, according to YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and its encoder setup instructions.
  • An encoder configured to send video to YouTube using the server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio. The cited guidance explains the encoder workflow but does not validate a particular Raspberry Pi operating system, command, or encoder application for continuous service.
  • Prerecorded video and audio that you have the rights to use in a live stream. YouTube says the provider is responsible for obtaining necessary rights and complying with applicable laws and regulatory requirements.
  • Stable power and connectivity. Raspberry Pi specifies a minimum 5 V, 3 A USB-C input; its getting-started documentation recommends a 15 W supply for the Pi 4B. See Raspberry Pi’s getting-started documentation. These specifications do not establish a UPS runtime or guarantee against power cuts.

How to set up a Pi-based prerecorded live stream

  1. Check YouTube access. In YouTube Studio, make sure the channel is verified and has no live-stream restriction from the previous 90 days. If you have never livestreamed, allow up to 24 hours for first-time enablement.
  2. Prepare the video files and encoder. Choose an encoder workflow that can send your prerecorded files as a live feed and repeat or schedule them as needed. The cited official documentation does not specify a Pi-ready looping command, so confirm that your chosen software supports your file formats and test it on the Pi before relying on it.
  3. Set a conservative output target. Keep the target within the Pi 4B’s documented H.264 encoding capability of up to 1080p30. Do not infer 4K encoding from its H.265 4K decoding specification. The exact performance of your chosen encoder and source files is not established by the board specification.
  4. Connect the encoder to YouTube. In YouTube Studio’s encoder setup, copy the server URL and stream key into the corresponding encoder fields, then preview the feed and check that YouTube receives it. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
  5. Test before making it continuous. Check audio and video, watch for dropped frames or disconnections, and confirm that your loop or schedule moves to the next file as intended. YouTube advises testing and monitoring stream quality in its streaming tips.
  6. Plan for failures and monitoring. A stream depends on the Pi, its power supply, the local network and the internet connection. Use wired Ethernet where practical; the Pi 4B has Gigabit Ethernet, but that does not ensure your internet connection is stable. Arrange a way to notice a stopped feed and restart or reconnect the encoder. These are operational precautions, not a guarantee that a particular setup will recover automatically.

Network, uptime and the meaning of “24/7”

Round-the-clock operation is a system-design problem, not a capability promised by the Pi 4B specification. A power cut, router restart, broadband outage, encoder crash or YouTube-side interruption can stop the feed. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom in its streaming tips; this is a recommendation, not a measured minimum for your particular stream. Check the real upload capacity and stability at the installation location rather than relying on an advertised broadband speed.

Decide whether to run one long live event or use scheduled sessions. YouTube’s DVR guidance says DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. That is a viewer rewind limitation, not a stated maximum allowed stream duration. Do not promise that viewers can rewind the entire broadcast. See YouTube’s DVR information.

Copyright and India-specific considerations

Rights apply to every part of the stream

Use original material or content for which you hold the rights needed for livestreaming, including music. Having a copy of a song or video does not by itself establish permission to broadcast it. YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions place responsibility for necessary rights on the content provider.

Licensed content can still trigger Content ID

YouTube says a live stream can be interrupted or terminated if it receives a Content ID match. For licensed third-party material, the rights owner may need to allowlist your channel. Confirm this with the rights holder before running a long broadcast; see YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Check the rules that apply to your channel and content in India

YouTube requires compliance with applicable laws and regulatory requirements in the territory. The official sources cited here do not determine which India-specific licences, registrations or notifications may apply to a particular prerecorded livestream. Check current India-specific official legal or regulator guidance for your content and circumstances rather than assuming that permission is either required or unnecessary.

Common problems and practical fixes

Symptom What to check Practical response
You cannot start a live stream Channel verification, a restriction within the previous 90 days, or first-time enablement still pending. Review YouTube’s eligibility guidance; allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
YouTube does not receive the feed Encoder server URL and stream key, and whether the encoder is actually sending. Copy the current values from YouTube Studio, check the encoder fields, and preview the feed before a public run. Keep the key private.
The feed drops or becomes unstable Local internet interruptions, upload capacity, Wi-Fi reliability, Pi power, or encoder failure. Test the connection at the Pi’s location, leave the recommended upload headroom, consider Ethernet, and arrange monitoring and a recovery procedure. YouTube’s bandwidth advice is in its streaming tips.
The Pi struggles with the chosen video output Output exceeds the documented H.264 ceiling, or the specific encoder and source files are demanding. Target no more than 1080p30 and test the chosen software and files locally; the specification does not guarantee performance for every application.
A stream is interrupted despite having a licence Content ID may identify material unless the rights owner has allowlisted the channel. Contact the rights holder about allowlisting and review YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.
Viewers cannot rewind the whole broadcast DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Set viewer expectations accordingly; consult YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Pi versus a cloud service for continuous streaming

Running an encoder on the Pi gives you a local setup to configure, but continuity depends on the Pi staying powered and the local connection remaining available. A cloud-based service shifts the looping and stream operation off the home computer; it still depends on YouTube and an internet connection at the service. YouTube’s encoder instructions identify Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 streams of prerecorded videos, but the cited information does not establish its current price, availability, compatibility details or referral terms.
