Then verify the feed in YouTube’s Live Control Room: a running process does not by itself prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
This guide assumes your VPS uses systemd and that you already have a working encoder command, such as an FFmpeg command. Unit files, paths, dependencies, and credential handling vary by operating system and setup, so test your own configuration during a planned maintenance window.
Boot startup and crash recovery are separate
Enabling a systemd service tells the system to start it during the normal boot process. The unit’s Restart= setting is a separate control: it tells systemd whether to restart the encoder after certain process exits or timeouts. Systemd documents Restart=no as the default; on-failure and always behave differently. In particular, always also covers clean exits, while systemd-operated stops are among the documented exceptions. Check the documentation for the systemd version installed on your VPS before relying on a particular behavior: systemd.service and systemctl.
Choose the policy to match the encoder’s expected behavior. If it should keep running until interrupted, on-failure is often a sensible starting point for handling unsuccessful exits; if the encoder may exit cleanly but should always be launched again, consider always. Neither policy fixes a bad command, missing input, invalid credentials, or a failed network connection.

Prepare the encoder and protect the stream key
Test the command outside the service first
Before creating a unit, run the intended encoder command manually with the same media input, output format, and YouTube destination you plan to use. Confirm that the file or input is available to the account that will run the service, and that the encoder can connect. This separates encoder and source problems from systemd startup problems.
Use the current YouTube destination and key
YouTube provides a stream URL and stream key in its live-streaming workflow. YouTube Help describes stream keys as password-like credentials that tell an encoder where to send the feed and let YouTube accept it. Keep the key private: do not put it in a public script, published example, or logs that others can read. See Manage live stream settings and Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

If you reset or replace the key, update the service’s protected configuration as well. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance explains how to retrieve the key in Live Control Room and update the encoder when needed: Troubleshoot YouTube Live streams.
Prefer an encrypted ingest connection
YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS encoder workflows and recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection using TLS/SSL. Use the exact destination YouTube provides for your stream rather than copying an endpoint from an unrelated example. FFmpeg documents RTMP-family protocols and streaming a real-time file to an RTMP server in its protocol documentation. YouTube’s explanation of encrypted ingest is at Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.

Configure the systemd service for your VPS
There is no universal unit file: the right command, user, paths, environment variables, input mounts, and network ordering depend on your Linux distribution, systemd version, source media, and how you store credentials. Adapt these steps to your VPS rather than pasting a generic service definition without checking it.
- Identify the service details. Record the full encoder command, the Linux user that should run it, the absolute paths to the executable and media, and any required mounts or network services. Make sure the service account can read the input and protected configuration.
- Create a systemd unit. Put the encoder command and its required settings in a systemd-managed service unit. Configure
Restart=for the encoder’s exit behavior. Arrange any necessary dependencies so that filesystems, mounts, or network access the command relies on are ready. Store the stream key with suitable access controls; avoid exposing it in a world-readable unit or diagnostic output. - Reload systemd and enable the unit. After saving the unit, reload systemd’s configuration, enable the service for the system’s normal boot target, and start it. Use the service name and commands appropriate to your installation; consult the systemd documentation for exact behavior and options.
- Check status and logs. Confirm that the service is active and inspect its logs for startup errors, missing files, permission failures, or connection problems. A service marked active only indicates process state, not that the YouTube stream is healthy.
- Run a controlled reboot test. Reboot during a maintenance window. After the VPS returns, check that the service started, the encoder connected, and the feed is visible and healthy in YouTube Live Control Room and on the viewer-facing stream page.

Check stream settings and network capacity
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube’s current encoder guidance covers H.264, H.265, and AV1 video options, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and recommended keyframe intervals. The recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use YouTube’s current table for the settings that match your encode rather than treating one bitrate as universal: YouTube encoder settings.
YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom above the total stream bitrate. A VPS reboot may restore the process without restoring a stable, adequately provisioned connection; YouTube warns that connectivity disruption can break a stream. Check the VPS’s outbound capacity and stability as part of the recovery test. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

What a reboot may mean for the live event
Do not assume that restarting the encoder resumes the exact same viewer-facing event or watch page. YouTube says live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but that statement does not guarantee how an interrupted 24/7 broadcast will appear, resume, or archive after a VPS reboot. Test your scheduled/live workflow in a maintenance window and check both Live Control Room and the viewer page.
Troubleshoot a stream that does not return
- The service is not active after reboot: Check whether the unit is enabled for the normal boot target, whether systemd accepted the unit, and what the service status and logs report. A restart policy alone does not enable boot startup.
- The service starts, then exits: Run the encoder command manually as the service user. Check for incorrect paths, inaccessible media, missing mounts, permissions, and command-line errors. Adjust restart behavior only after understanding whether the encoder exits cleanly or unsuccessfully.
- The encoder runs but YouTube does not receive the feed: Confirm the current stream URL and key in Live Control Room, and update the protected service configuration if the key was reset. Check connection errors and outbound network availability.
- The feed connects but is unstable: Check actual upload capacity against total stream bitrate with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, along with network stability and encoder settings.
- The stream appears under a different event or the old page is unavailable: Verify the scheduled/live workflow and viewer-facing result directly. A process restart does not establish that YouTube resumed the same event or page.
