1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo keep an FFmpeg stream from filling a VPS disk, first inspect every FFmpeg output and every wrapper or service setting that launches it. Sending a stream to YouTube over the network does not itself require a growing local recording, but a second output, a relative filename, or file-based HLS segments can consume disk space. Remove outputs you do not need; for storage that must remain bounded, use monitoring and an operating-system or service-level limit. FFmpeg buffer options are not disk quotas.
Find out what is writing to the VPS disk
FFmpeg can send output to a network destination or write it to a regular file, and a command can declare more than one output. Read the complete command, not just the part that contains the YouTube destination. Check every output after each input for a local path, relative filename, recording file, or segment and playlist filename template. FFmpeg’s documentation describes output destinations and options, but available options can vary by installed version; consult the documentation for the version on your VPS. FFmpeg documentation
- Inspect the full command. Identify each output URL or filename and the options associated with it. A network output to YouTube does not rule out an additional local output.
- Inspect the launcher. Check the process working directory and any wrapper script, cron job, container definition, or service configuration that starts FFmpeg. These can supply output paths or additional arguments that are not obvious in the command you initially reviewed.
- Identify the growing files and filesystem. Measure disk usage on the VPS and determine which paths and files are increasing. Do not assume that a YouTube buffering warning means the VPS disk is full.
Remove or manage outputs that use local storage
Network-only streaming
If you only need to send the stream to YouTube, remove any unintended recording or file-based segment output from the command or launcher. Confirm the muxer and destination for each remaining output; network streaming and writing files are separate output configurations. FFmpeg documentation
Local recording
If a recording is required, that file will use space as it grows. Decide how much local retention is acceptable and arrange to monitor and limit storage at the VPS operating-system or service layer. The appropriate quota mechanism depends on the operating system and filesystem, neither of which is specified here.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
File-based HLS
File-based HLS creates local segment files and playlists. Its retention needs separate management: old segments and playlists can remain on disk. The FFmpeg HLS temp_file flag writes a segment under a temporary name and renames it when complete, helping avoid serving an incomplete segment; it does not delete old segments or cap the directory’s total size. FFmpeg HLS muxer documentation
If you need HLS files, define a retention policy and verify how it treats completed segments, playlists, and temporary files. Do not treat the temporary-file rename behavior as cleanup.

Use the right control for the problem
| Control or configuration | What it addresses | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Choosing network outputs instead of unnecessary local file outputs | Prevents FFmpeg from writing artifacts that the workflow does not require. | Does not enforce a disk limit for any files that are still written. |
HLS temp_file |
Writes a segment to a temporary filename and renames it once complete. | Does not remove earlier segments or constrain total storage. FFmpeg HLS muxer documentation |
| OS- or service-level quota or limit, with disk monitoring | Provides a capacity boundary and helps alert you as storage fills. | Does not decide which FFmpeg outputs are useful or set their retention policy. |
-max_muxing_queue_size or -muxing_queue_data_threshold |
Controls related to muxing queues and buffering, as described by FFmpeg. | Does not cap filesystem use. FFmpeg documentation |
-xerror |
FFmpeg’s global option to stop and exit on an error. | Is not a proactive storage cap or a disk quota. FFmpeg documentation |
FFmpeg documentation describes -xerror as “Stop and exit on error.” That is error handling, not a promise that FFmpeg will stop before a filesystem reaches its capacity. The documentation for queue settings likewise describes packet and buffering behavior, not filesystem quotas. FFmpeg documentation
Separate disk exhaustion from stream-delivery problems
YouTube’s stream diagnostics concern the incoming stream. Its guidance identifies keyframes that are not frequent enough as one possible cause of buffering. Investigate a keyframe or buffering warning as a stream-delivery issue; check disk usage and growing VPS files separately when diagnosing storage. YouTube live encoder settings and bitrates

Troubleshoot a VPS that is filling up
- Disk usage rises during a network stream: inspect all command outputs and launcher configuration for an added recording file, relative path, or file-based HLS output.
- An HLS directory grows over time: check whether old segments and playlists are retained. The
temp_fileflag only concerns how an individual segment is written and renamed. - YouTube reports buffering: check the incoming stream diagnostics, including keyframe frequency, rather than treating buffering as proof of disk exhaustion.
- FFmpeg exits after an error:
-xerrorcan stop the process on an error, but it does not set a storage threshold. Check the filesystem and configure an appropriate limit separately. - FFmpeg options do not match examples you find: confirm the installed FFmpeg version and use its corresponding documentation. The project notes that documentation is regenerated and recommends consulting local documentation for older versions. FFmpeg documentation
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is simply to keep uploaded videos looping on a YouTube channel, StreamNeo is an alternative to running FFmpeg on your VPS: it runs the stream in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home or on your own computer. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube.
- Any quality up to 4K 60fps, streamed as uploaded, at one price per slot.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required.
The monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or its plans, then start the free day.
