Choose how to keep the feed running
YouTube accepts streams from encoder software on a computer or from standalone encoder hardware; it does not require one particular encoder model. For a prerecorded loop, a cloud service can play uploaded videos without leaving a local encoding computer on. YouTube’s verified encoder information also names Gyre as a cloud-based 24/7 streaming tool and CamStreamer as an in-camera Axis application for continuous or scheduled streams. These are options for the workflows described, not endorsements or confirmation of current prices or terms.

YouTube also lists AWS Elemental MediaLive as a verified encoder and describes it as broadcast-grade live video processing; the available guidance does not establish that it is necessary for a basic 1080p channel. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance for its encoder information.
Activate live streaming and prepare the channel
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube’s getting-started guidance says the channel must be verified and have no live-stream restrictions in the prior 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before your planned start. See YouTube live streaming tips.
- Choose an encoder workflow. Use software on an always-on computer or standalone hardware for a produced feed. For prerecorded loops, decide whether to play media locally or use a cloud-based workflow.
- Set up the live stream in YouTube. In Live Control Room, create or select the stream and obtain its stream key. Enter that key in the encoder’s stream settings, following YouTube’s live stream settings guidance. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it outside the encoder setup.
- Preview before going live. Confirm the incoming picture and sound in Live Control Room, then check that the event is accessible from the channel and watch pages before relying on it.
Set 1080p resolution, frame rate, and bitrate
Set the encoder output to 1920×1080. Choose a frame rate that matches the source and movement: 30 fps is usually a sensible choice for a mostly static scene or modest-motion loop, while 60 fps can suit faster movement if the encoder and connection can sustain the higher bitrate. That choice is practical guidance based on YouTube’s separate frame-rate recommendations, not a platform rule that one frame rate suits every stream.

These are YouTube’s recommended live-ingestion bitrates, not guarantees of picture quality on every source or network. Do not apply one number to every codec and frame rate. The current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions page covers these figures and additional supported settings.
- Rate control: use constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: set a 2-second interval; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted version of RTMP.
- Video format: for ordinary SDR, use progressive scan and Rec. 709. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as video codec options, with frame rates up to 60 fps.
- Audio: YouTube’s guidance includes AAC or MP3 and 128 kbps stereo audio.
YouTube transcodes the incoming feed into different output formats for viewers. Sending 1080p does not mean every viewer will receive a 1080p rendition on every device or network.

Provide enough stable upload bandwidth
YouTube recommends leaving 20% of upload capacity unused relative to the total stream bitrate. It also says to measure outbound upload—not download—and include both primary and backup bitrates if you send a backup stream. Its streaming tips state: “The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.”

The upload-capacity values are arithmetic examples using YouTube’s bitrate recommendations and 20% headroom, not additional platform-published measurements. Allow more capacity for other network traffic and any backup stream. A speed test is only a snapshot; check the connection during representative network use and avoid saturating the upload link.

Test the full operation and plan for interruptions
- Rehearse with representative content. Use movement and audio similar to the actual program. Check for clipping, sync problems, dropped frames, and unstable bitrate.
- Preview and watch stream health. Set up ahead of time, check Live Control Room messages, and confirm the event is accessible where viewers will find it.
- Check any local recording. If recording an archive, verify that the local file is growing and intact; a recording preserves a copy but does not keep the live feed online.
- Test failover if you have a backup encoder. YouTube recommends stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable to check that the player rolls over to the backup.
- Decide what should happen after failures. Plan for source-file completion, software restart, computer reboot, network loss, power interruption, and a YouTube-side ingest error. The cited YouTube guidance does not prescribe a universal watchdog or redundancy design.
Know the replay limit for a continuous stream
A continuously live channel and a complete replay are separate goals. YouTube Help says: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” YouTube recommends recording a local archive as a backup; for a complete replay, record locally and consider planned shorter live sessions.
