To stream a folder of videos to YouTube Live in a loop, use encoder software that can play the files repeatedly and send its video-and-audio feed to YouTube. YouTube Live receives that feed; YouTube Studio does not select or loop a folder on your computer. Create a stream in Live Control Room, copy its stream URL and key into the encoder, configure the playlist and repeat behavior in the encoder, then check the preview before going live.
What you need before you start
- A verified YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours.
- No live-streaming restrictions on the channel in the past 90 days.
- An encoder that supports your video files, playlist playback, and looping. Exact menus and file-format support vary by encoder; check its current documentation.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the encoder’s outgoing stream.
- The video and audio rights needed to broadcast and, if applicable, monetize every file in the loop.
YouTube explains that an encoder converts video into a digital format for streaming. It may be software or a hardware device, and it sends the resulting feed to YouTube. Its general setup instructions do not define a universal folder selector or repeat control, so the loop must be configured in the encoder you choose.
Set up the YouTube Live stream
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create a new stream or schedule one. For a first broadcast, enable live streaming in advance; activation can take up to 24 hours.
- Choose or create the stream settings that fit the broadcast. YouTube provides a stream URL and stream key for connecting an encoder.
- Copy the URL and key into the matching fields in your encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not share it or show it on screen. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in Live Control Room before using it again.
- If the stream is scheduled, start the encoder and wait for its feed to appear in the Live Control Room preview. Use the room’s Go live control when required by the scheduled-stream workflow.
YouTube documents stream scheduling, saved or reused settings, and auto-start and auto-stop options. These controls concern the YouTube broadcast; they do not guarantee that a particular encoder will restart a playlist after losing connection.
Configure the folder loop in your encoder
- In the encoder, add the files from the folder to a playlist or media source. Some software may require you to add files individually rather than selecting a folder.
- Arrange the playback order and enable the encoder’s repeat or loop option. Confirm whether it repeats the full playlist or only the current file.
- Set the output and audio options supported by both your encoder and the YouTube stream setup. Use the encoder’s current documentation for exact controls and compatible formats; YouTube’s general encoder setup does not specify folder-loop settings.
- Preview the playlist locally or in the encoder. Check that each file has picture and sound, that the intended order is correct, and that the transition between the last and first files behaves as expected.
- Start sending the encoder feed to YouTube, inspect the Live Control Room preview, and then start the broadcast if YouTube has not started it automatically.
Do not assume that a folder changing on disk will update an active playlist, or that every encoder resumes at the right point after a crash. Check the encoder documentation for file refresh, restart, and reconnect behavior, then test the exact workflow you plan to use.

Test and monitor the broadcast
YouTube recommends trying a test live stream before an important broadcast. Set up at least two hours in advance, and start the encoder at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event. That leaves time to confirm that the encoder is connected and the preview looks right.
- Watch the Live Control Room preview for video, audio, and playback order before going live.
- Listen for silent files, unexpected volume changes, clipped audio, or gaps between playlist items.
- Monitor the stream during playback. A successful initial connection does not prove that the encoder will recover from a later interruption.
- Check your encoder’s reconnect and playlist restart behavior. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop options do not establish that every encoder can restore its playlist after a disconnect.
Copyright, reused content, and channel rules
Only stream videos and audio you have the rights or permission to broadcast. A file being prerecorded, publicly available, or credited to its creator does not by itself establish permission. YouTube’s live-streaming and monetization rules still apply to a loop, and repeating the same material does not remove copyright obligations.

Reused-content eligibility is a separate consideration from copyright permission. A creator can have permission to use material and still need to consider whether a channel’s content meets YouTube’s monetization policies. Review the current policies in YouTube Studio and use original or meaningfully transformed material where monetization is a goal; no encoder setting can make content eligible.
Plan for a long-running loop
YouTube says it can automatically archive live streams shorter than 12 hours. Do not rely on a complete automatic archive for a stream that runs 12 hours or longer. If an archive matters, plan a shorter broadcast and verify the resulting recording.

DVR lets viewers pause and resume, but YouTube says rewind capability may be limited or unavailable on very long streams beyond 12 hours. For an uninterrupted loop, consider whether viewers need to rewind and whether splitting the broadcast into shorter scheduled streams better fits that need.
Troubleshoot common problems
