Either a spare PC or a VPS can send a prerecorded animated loop to YouTube around the clock; neither is automatically the better choice. A spare PC keeps the encoder at home, so the stream depends on local power and internet. A VPS moves the encoder to a hosted server, but you must confirm that the particular server can run your streaming software and encode the animation. Decide based on a representative stream test, the full recurring cost, and how you will recover after an interruption. For uploaded prerecorded loops, a managed cloud encoder is another option.

Choose based on your setup
A spare PC is a sensible first choice when
- You already have a computer that can encode the actual animation at your intended resolution and frame rate.
- Your home power and upload connection are dependable enough for continuous use.
- You are prepared to maintain the machine, monitor the stream, and respond to interruptions.
Consider a VPS when
- You want the broadcast to depend less on your home computer and internet connection.
- The provider confirms that your specific plan and operating environment support the streaming software and required graphics or hardware encoding.
- You are comfortable managing the server, checking its resource use, and following its traffic terms.
A community warning about running OBS on a VPS dates to 2019 and is anecdotal, not a current compatibility list. Treat it as a reason to verify the chosen server directly with its provider, not as proof that VPS hosting cannot work. There is no verified universal VPS specification for this job.
Set YouTube’s outgoing stream settings
YouTube’s ingest guidance, accessed in 2026, recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs and frame rates up to 60 fps. Use a codec supported by your encoder and configured correctly for your chosen streaming workflow.

These figures are YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest bitrates, not minimum PC or VPS specifications. They are starting points for the outgoing feed, not a guarantee that a connection can carry it. Choose a target your upload path can sustain; resolution, frame rate, codec, and motion in the animation all affect the workload. YouTube transcodes incoming live streams for viewers, but that does not compensate for an unstable feed from your encoder.

Test before relying on a 24/7 broadcast
- Decide what you are encoding. Establish whether the animation is generated live or is a prerecorded file or playlist. The managed cloud option described below is for uploaded prerecorded media.
- Choose the target format. Set the resolution, frame rate, and codec in your encoder, then use YouTube’s bitrate guidance as a starting point. Confirm that the upload connection can sustain the bitrate.
- Verify the machine or server. Run the actual animated scene with the intended output settings. For a VPS, obtain current confirmation from the provider about graphics or hardware encoding and software compatibility; do not infer support from the word “VPS” alone.
- Configure the YouTube connection. Use the stream key for the intended YouTube broadcast and keep it private; anyone with access to the key may be able to send a feed to that destination. Use RTMPS where supported, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval.
- Run a representative test. Include audio and movement similar to the planned stream. YouTube’s Help guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream,” and recommends monitoring stream health.
- Watch for dropped frames and interruptions. OBS’s troubleshooting guidance identifies an unstable connection or insufficient connection capacity for the configured bitrate as possible causes of dropped frames. Check both the encoder and YouTube stream health rather than assuming the server or PC is adequate because it started successfully.
- Test recovery. Simulate or observe the recovery workflow: determine how you will restart the encoder, reconnect to YouTube, and confirm that the broadcast is sending again. Keep access to the PC or provider console available.
- Work out actual operating costs. Compare the PC’s electricity and wear, if material to your decision, with VPS rental, any additional encoding resources, and transfer terms. No comparative cost, uptime, power-use, or failure-rate figures are established here.
Copyright and channel-policy checks
Before looping an animation, verify that you have the rights needed for every element you broadcast, including music, sound effects, artwork, and any third-party footage. A continuous live broadcast is not a substitute for permission. Also assess whether the channel’s videos provide original value rather than relying on repetition alone; copyright compliance and YouTube monetization eligibility are separate questions. YouTube’s content and monetization rules can change, so check the current YouTube Help guidance for the specific material and channel before scheduling a long-running stream.
