FFmpeg vs OBS for a Prerecorded YouTube Live Loop

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a straightforward prerecorded YouTube Live loop on a computer that can stay on, OBS is usually the easier starting point. Its graphical interface lets you add a Media Source and enable a Loop setting. FFmpeg is a better fit if you are comfortable configuring media from the command line and want explicit control over inputs, processing, and output. If the stream needs to run without your everyday computer, consider a VPS or a cloud service instead.

OBS or FFmpeg: which should you choose?

Option Best fit What it offers What to plan for
OBS Media Source You prefer a graphical setup or want to combine the video with other scene sources. A local video source with a Loop control, plus playback and decoding options documented by the OBS Project. The computer and OBS session must remain available while the stream runs. No comparative reliability test establishes how it performs against FFmpeg.
FFmpeg You are comfortable with terminal commands and configuring media input and output. A command-line workflow for reading media, applying filters or transcoding, and writing to a selected destination. The appropriate configuration depends on the file’s streams, encoding choices, FFmpeg build, and destination requirements. A command that works for one setup is not guaranteed for another.
VPS running FFmpeg You want to run FFmpeg on a remote server and can administer hosting. Moves the process off your local computer. You must select and maintain hosting. Actual costs and operational reliability are not established here.
Hosted cloud service You would rather delegate hosting and loop operation. A provider runs the stream operation in the cloud. Check the provider’s current plan and service terms; vendor descriptions are not independent reliability studies.

These are workflow-based choices, not an uptime ranking. The key questions are whether you want a graphical interface, need to compose scenes, where the process should run, and whether you are willing to manage hosting.

Loop a prerecorded video in OBS

OBS’s Media Source supports common local video formats. Its Loop property is off by default, so you need to enable it for playback to repeat.

  1. Add a source: In your OBS scene, add a Media Source and select your local video file.
  2. Enable looping: In the Media Source properties, turn on Loop. The OBS Project documents this setting as controlling whether the file plays again after playback completes.
  3. Choose relevant playback behavior: Restart playback when source becomes active restarts the clip when the source becomes active. For a single-file loop, enable it if you want playback to start from the beginning when the source is activated again.
  4. Review the end-of-playback option: Show nothing when playback ends controls what the source displays after playback ends. With Loop enabled, playback should repeat; this option matters if looping is turned off or playback otherwise ends.
  5. Use hardware decoding only if appropriate: OBS also documents a hardware-decoding option when available. Its effect depends on the computer and media, so treat it as a setting to evaluate for your setup rather than a universal requirement.
  6. Connect OBS to YouTube Live: Set the YouTube ingest destination and stream key using YouTube Studio’s current instructions. Verify that your channel is eligible and that your stream settings meet YouTube’s current requirements before going live.
  7. Start and verify: Start streaming in OBS, then check YouTube Studio and the public playback to confirm the video is live and repeating as intended.

Use FFmpeg for a loop

FFmpeg is a command-line media tool. Its documentation describes an input-and-output command model: it reads input media, can filter or transcode it, and writes the result to a chosen destination. The FFmpeg project calls it “a universal media converter.” That flexibility is useful when you want to configure the media path explicitly, but it requires comfort with options and command configuration.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Inspect the input: Identify the file’s video and audio streams, formats, and properties. The stream layout affects what needs to be passed through or converted.
  2. Configure repetition and processing: Set up the input and loop behavior, then decide whether the media needs filtering or transcoding. FFmpeg’s full documentation describes streaming and loop-related features; the correct options depend on the input and the build you are using.
  3. Choose output settings: Configure the video and audio output to meet the destination’s current ingest requirements. Do not assume the file’s existing codecs or parameters are suitable for every stream.
  4. Set the destination: Direct the output to the current YouTube ingest destination using the stream key and method specified by YouTube Studio and official documentation.
  5. Test the exact setup: Confirm that the output reaches YouTube, that audio and video play correctly, and that the video repeats. Validate any command against your FFmpeg build, input codecs, and current YouTube requirements.

There is no single untested RTMP command that can be promised to work for every file and FFmpeg build. For the same reason, a command-line workflow should not be treated as inherently more reliable than OBS.

Running the loop away from your computer

A VPS running FFmpeg moves the process to a server, but you still select and administer the hosting environment. A hosted service shifts that operational work to a provider. The available comparison identifies these as practical alternatives but does not establish their relative uptime or independently verified costs.

Check YouTube requirements before you go live

A stream key and ingest destination are part of the setup, but requirements and eligibility can change. Check YouTube Studio and current official YouTube documentation for your channel’s live-stream access, ingest settings, and applicable policies. Make sure you have the rights to the video and audio you broadcast, and review YouTube’s current copyright and reused-content policies; looping a file does not itself establish that you have permission to use it or that it complies with platform rules.
