To loop videos stored on a remote server into YouTube Live, create an ordered FFmpeg concat playlist, feed it to FFmpeg with input looping enabled, and send the encoded output to the stream URL and key shown in YouTube Studio. This works only after you check that the files are compatible—or normalize them to a common format—and test the whole path from the server to YouTube. The exact command depends on your media, operating system, and FFmpeg build; no single command is safe to assume for every folder.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has had no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube lists both as prerequisites in its live streaming help.
- Remote-server access, FFmpeg installed, and the video files available at stable paths.
- Enough reliable outbound bandwidth from the server for your chosen stream bitrate, plus headroom.
- A way to keep the encoder process running and monitor or restart it if it exits.
The server’s actual network route matters: a speed test from your home computer does not establish the upload capacity between the remote host and YouTube.
Set up the YouTube encoder stream
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe this workflow.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key displayed in Studio into your encoder configuration. Use the current values shown there rather than assuming a URL or key.
- Choose privacy and review auto-start and auto-stop behavior in Live Control Room before an unattended run. These settings affect when the stream starts and who can watch it.
- Prefer RTMPS when your encoder supports it. YouTube recommends this encrypted extension of RTMP in its recommended encoder settings.
Treat the stream key as a secret: it lets an encoder send a feed to your channel. Keep it out of public scripts and repositories, restrict access to any configuration file that contains it, and avoid printing it in logs. If it is exposed, reset it in Studio; see YouTube’s stream key guidance.
Build an ordered playlist from the folder
Select files deliberately
Choose the videos and their order explicitly. Do not depend on the order returned by a filesystem listing, which may not match the sequence you intend. Make sure the server account running FFmpeg can read every file, and use paths that remain valid after a reboot or deployment.

Write the concat playlist
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads a text playlist of files in sequence. A basic playlist uses this format:
ffconcat version 1.0
file '/srv/videos/01-opening.mp4'
file '/srv/videos/02-main.mp4'
file '/srv/videos/03-closing.mp4'
Save it as a text file, for example /srv/videos/playlist.ffconcat. Use the actual paths on your server and check that each entry opens. The concat format has path-safety rules; consult the FFmpeg documentation if your paths, protocols, or filenames require special handling.

Check whether stream copy is appropriate
Before choosing stream copy, inspect the files’ streams and parameters. FFmpeg documents that concat demuxing expects corresponding streams to match, including codecs and time bases; duration inaccuracies can also cause artifacts. A folder of files with different resolutions, frame rates, codecs, audio layouts, or timestamps is not automatically a safe stream-copy playlist.
- If the files have compatible stream layouts and parameters, try a short concat test with stream copy and inspect transitions and audio.
- If they differ, normalize or re-encode to a consistent resolution, frame rate, video codec, pixel format, and audio layout before relying on continuous playback.
- If an entry fails to open or the playlist behaves unexpectedly, correct the path or media mismatch before connecting it to a public stream.
Choose YouTube-compatible output settings
YouTube’s current encoder settings support H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS workflows. The guidance allows up to 60 fps, calls for constant bitrate encoding, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds. Use the applicable current bitrate recommendation for your codec, resolution, and frame rate.

| H.264 example | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published H.264 examples, not guarantees that a particular server or media set will sustain the stream. Choose settings for the actual content and the server’s stable upload capacity. YouTube recommends roughly 20% network headroom above the stream bitrate in its streaming tips. Its SDR guidance includes Rec. 709 and 8-bit video; do not apply HDR-specific requirements to a basic SDR stream.
Run the looping FFmpeg feed
The implementation has three pieces: loop the playlist input, select stream copy or encoding appropriate to your files, and send the output to the current YouTube URL and key. FFmpeg documents input looping and concat demuxing separately; the exact usable command depends on the media and your FFmpeg build. In particular, the input-loop option belongs before the playlist input. Do not treat a generic command as verified for an unspecified folder.

- Confirm the playlist plays in order and that its entries can be read by the server process.
- Test stream-copy concatenation if the streams are compatible; otherwise configure a consistent encode matching YouTube’s current settings.
- Set the output to the RTMPS URL and stream key currently shown in Live Control Room. Protect the key rather than embedding it in a shared or public command.
- Start the encoder and wait for its preview in Live Control Room before making the stream public.
- Run a short unlisted test. Check the preview, stream health, transitions, audio, bitrate, and whether the feed reconnects as expected.
Keep a remote stream operating
A looping input does not by itself guarantee a permanently uninterrupted YouTube session. Plan how you will detect a stopped process, network interruption, missing file, full disk, or encoder error, and how you will restart or rotate the session. YouTube recommends testing encoder failover and monitoring stream audio and video quality in its streaming tips.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived in its encoder how-to. That does not establish that one session can remain open indefinitely or that a session longer than 12 hours will be archived. For continuous operation, test a session-rotation or restart policy and confirm the current behavior for your channel in Live Control Room.

Common problems and fixes
- Playlist stops at a file: Check the entry’s path, permissions, and whether the file opens on the server; then test that item separately.
- Glitches or bad transitions: Compare stream layouts, codecs, time bases, durations, and timestamps. Normalize or re-encode incompatible files instead of assuming stream-copy concatenation will work.
- YouTube preview does not appear: Confirm the URL and key copied from the active Studio stream, check the encoder’s output and server connectivity, and verify that the channel meets YouTube’s live-stream eligibility conditions.
- Buffering or unstable stream health: Reduce output bitrate or resolution and measure the remote server’s upload path. Keep about 20% headroom above the chosen bitrate as YouTube recommends.
- Unexpectedly public or stopped stream: Review privacy and auto-start/auto-stop settings in Live Control Room, then test the intended behavior before unattended use.
- Feed stops after running for a while: Inspect the encoder process, server disk and network, and Live Control Room status. Add monitoring and a tested restart or rotation plan rather than assuming a loop keeps the YouTube session alive forever.
