You can use a Raspberry Pi running Ubuntu Server to send a continuous feed to YouTube Live, but whether it can encode your particular source reliably depends on the board, capture method, resolution, frame rate, cooling and network connection. Set up a supported Ubuntu image, configure an encoder to send a YouTube-compatible feed, then test the complete setup under representative conditions before relying on it around the clock. YouTube may not archive a stream that runs longer than 12 hours, so plan separately if you need a recording.
What you need to decide before setting up the Pi
First identify what the stream will show. A camera, HDMI capture device, generated graphics and a prerecorded-video loop place different demands on the Pi. The available official guidance does not establish a Raspberry Pi model, cooling arrangement or encoder recipe that is proven to sustain every workload 24/7. Treat your target resolution and frame rate as something to validate, not a performance guarantee.
- A Raspberry Pi model supported by the Ubuntu Server image you intend to install.
- Boot storage: Ubuntu documents microSD and USB storage, and NVMe with a suitable HAT for Raspberry Pi 5.
- A stable power supply and a way to keep the board ventilated under sustained load.
- Your video and audio source, plus any required capture equipment.
- A reliable internet connection. Wired Ethernet is a practical choice where available, but test the actual connection you will use.
- A YouTube channel eligible to stream, with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days.
Check the Ubuntu Raspberry Pi support matrix for the exact board and release pairing before downloading or flashing an image. The matrix also covers release-specific EEPROM requirements; a newer image may require a minimum boot EEPROM date. Do not assume that an older installation tutorial’s suggested release is still the right current image.
Install Ubuntu Server and prepare remote access
- Choose a supported image. Use the Ubuntu board and release matrix to confirm the image supports your exact Pi. Choose boot storage appropriate to the board and installation: microSD or USB storage, or NVMe on Pi 5 with a suitable HAT.
- Flash the image to boot storage. Follow Ubuntu’s Raspberry Pi installation tutorial for the general process. It covers flashing, first boot and connecting; check the current support matrix for release compatibility rather than treating the tutorial’s older release recommendation as current.
- Complete first-boot setup. Connect the Pi to your network and allow its initial configuration to finish. A headless setup can be administered remotely, so the Pi does not need a permanently attached monitor and keyboard once network access is working.
- Confirm you can administer it. Before configuring the encoder, make sure you can reach the server remotely and that it can access the internet. Resolve local network or account access issues before introducing the stream key.
Ubuntu’s Raspberry Pi documentation lists supported boot-media options. Keep any local recording storage in mind as a separate capacity need: the space used for recordings is not a backup unless you also keep another copy.

Prepare YouTube Live and protect the stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder setup workflow describes creating or scheduling a live stream and connecting an encoder.
- Confirm the channel is eligible for live streaming. YouTube requires a verified channel and no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days for encoder streaming.
- In the stream settings, obtain the stream URL and stream key. Enter them in the encoder’s streaming destination settings; the exact labels vary by encoder.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it, include it in screenshots or expose it in a public configuration. If it is exposed, reset it using YouTube’s stream settings and key-management controls, then update the encoder with the replacement.
Do not put a real stream key in a script, article, support post or shared screenshot. The YouTube workflow and key-management page explain how to retrieve and reset it.
Choose encoder settings that YouTube accepts
Configure an encoder to take the selected source, encode compatible video and audio, and send the result to YouTube over RTMP or RTMPS. YouTube’s encoder settings specify H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds.

| Starting target | YouTube H.264 bitrate guidance | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | YouTube’s recommended bitrate for this resolution and frame rate; it is not a Raspberry Pi performance result. |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | YouTube’s recommended bitrate for this resolution and frame rate; it is not a Raspberry Pi performance result. |
If you need a conservative first test and your source and encoder can sustain it, start at 720p30 H.264, CBR, with a two-second keyframe interval. Move to 1080p30 only after the chosen Pi, input path and cooling arrangement pass sustained testing. These targets are YouTube recommendations, not a promise that a particular board can encode them continuously.
The workload matters: a Pi receiving a camera or capture-device feed may face different encoding and I/O demands from one playing a prepared video. Check the selected encoder’s capabilities on the board you actually have. The official sources cited here do not provide a verified FFmpeg command or 24/7 performance benchmark for this exact setup, so a one-size-fits-all command would be misleading.

Test bandwidth and the full stream before leaving it unattended
YouTube recommends upload capacity with 20% headroom beyond the outgoing stream bitrate and advises testing and monitoring stream health. For example, a 3 Mbps outgoing video stream calls for at least 3.6 Mbps of available upload capacity under that headroom guideline; at 5 Mbps, the corresponding figure is 6 Mbps. Those are capacity calculations from YouTube’s guidance, not guarantees that a variable connection will remain stable. See YouTube’s streaming tips and encoder settings.
- Run the stream with representative video movement and audio, not just a static image. A test that does not resemble the intended source may miss encoding or sound problems.
- Watch the YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators while the encoder is sending.
- Check for dropped frames, audio problems, overheating or other signs that the board cannot sustain the workload. Test for long enough to reveal problems that may not appear in a brief connection check.
- Repeat the test over the same network path and with the same video source, encoder settings, power and cooling arrangement you plan to use continuously.
- Decide how you will notice and respond to a failed feed before operating unattended. Test recovery behavior instead of assuming a process restart will preserve the same YouTube event.
Plan for continuous operation and recovery
Power loss, excess heat, a stopped encoder and network interruptions can all interrupt a self-hosted stream. YouTube specifically warns that an unstable or interrupted uplink can break the feed. Consider the following operational measures as ways to reduce risk, not as guarantees of uninterrupted service:

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Use a stable power source and provide ventilation appropriate to the board and its sustained workload.
- Prefer a wired network where practical, and test the connection’s upload stability rather than relying on a single speed check.
- Use an appropriate process-supervision or restart approach for your encoder, and monitor the Pi and the YouTube stream rather than assuming either will recover silently.
- Document how to reconnect the encoder and how to reset the YouTube key if it is exposed. Keep the key private.
- Test what happens after an encoder restart and after a network outage. A restarted local process does not by itself establish that the original YouTube event will continue as intended.
The cited official documentation confirms that interruptions can break the feed; it does not prescribe a particular watchdog or service-manager configuration for this setup. Choose and test recovery behavior for your own encoder and event workflow.

YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours. A stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all, according to YouTube’s encoder workflow guidance. A continuous 24/7 broadcast therefore should not be treated as a reliable way to create a YouTube archive.

If an archive matters, arrange a local recording or deliberately end and restart the broadcast in shorter sessions. Local recording requires separate storage planning and adds work for the Pi; do not treat a single recording disk as a backup unless another copy exists.
Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the encoder feed | Stream URL, stream key, channel eligibility or network access | Confirm the channel meets YouTube’s encoder-streaming requirements, check that the current URL and key are entered correctly, and verify the Pi can reach the internet. Reset an exposed key and replace it in the encoder. |
| Feed connects but has unstable health or interruptions | Upload stability and available headroom | Measure and test the connection while streaming; YouTube recommends upload capacity 20% above the outgoing bitrate. Try a more stable network path and monitor the Live Control Room. |
| Video drops frames or the Pi struggles during the test | Encoder workload, source, resolution, frame rate or thermal conditions | Test a lower target such as 720p30, check the board’s sustained behavior and cooling, and change one workload factor at a time. YouTube bitrate guidance does not establish the Pi’s encoding capacity. |
| Audio is missing or incompatible | Source routing or encoder audio format | Check that the encoder receives the intended audio source and uses AAC or MP3, formats listed in YouTube’s encoder guidance. |
| Broadcast is live but no complete YouTube archive appears | Stream duration | Do not rely on YouTube to archive a stream longer than 12 hours; use local recording or planned shorter sessions if an archive is required. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping on a YouTube channel, rather than broadcast a live camera or capture-device feed, StreamNeo is an alternative to running an encoder on a Raspberry Pi. It is a YouTube-only cloud service for uploaded videos; it does not go live from a camera.
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video or playlist from the cloud.
Nothing has to stay on at home, and no computer, OBS or home internet connection has to remain running for the stream. Each slot streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
