Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThere is no single YouTube bitrate cap for every live stream. Choose the codec, resolution, and frame rate first, then configure FFmpeg around YouTube’s recommended bitrate for that output. For example, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p60. Keep at least 20% upload headroom above the combined bitrate of primary and backup streams, and record locally if you need an archive: YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured.
Choose the bitrate for your codec and output mode
YouTube publishes minimum and recommended ingest bitrates, not one universal hard maximum. Its encoder settings distinguish H.264 from AV1/H.265, as well as resolution and frame rate. Use the recommended value as your target when bandwidth permits; the minimum is a lower published threshold, not a promise of equivalent picture quality. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings table before going live, since platform recommendations can change.
| Ingest codec and output | YouTube minimum | YouTube recommended |
|---|---|---|
| H.264, 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| H.264, 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| H.264, 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| H.264, 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| AV1/H.265, 1080p30 | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| AV1/H.265, 1080p60 | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
These figures are YouTube’s published minimum and recommended settings; they are not evidence of a universal platform ceiling. Match the table row to the codec YouTube will receive, not simply the codec of the source file. If your chosen resolution or frame rate is not shown here, consult the full table rather than extrapolating a bitrate.
Set FFmpeg and YouTube’s ingest requirements
YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS. It supports H.264, H.265, and AV1, up to 60 fps; for the specific encoder settings, use the current YouTube table and confirm the selected stream’s settings in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends CBR and a keyframe interval of two seconds, with a maximum interval of four seconds. Its advanced settings include square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, and one reference frame. For stereo audio, it recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
FFmpeg provides encoder controls for bitrate, maximum rate, and buffer size, but these controls alone do not guarantee compliant constant-bitrate output. Exact options depend on the encoder you select, the input, and the output format. Do not copy a generic command and assume it meets YouTube’s requirements; verify the actual encoded stream and its health. FFmpeg’s option reference is at ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg-all.html.
- Select the delivery mode. Choose the codec, resolution, and frame rate based on the content and the capacity of the machine and connection that will run the encoder.
- Set the bitrate target. Use the matching YouTube recommended bitrate where possible. If available upload is limited, reduce resolution or frame rate before assuming that a lower-than-recommended rate will look equivalent.
- Configure rate control and keyframes. Set the selected encoder for CBR behavior and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Encoder-specific syntax varies, so check the documentation for the chosen FFmpeg encoder.
- Match the stream setup in YouTube. In Live Control Room, create or select the stream and enter its stream key in the encoder. Treat that key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream. Confirm the stream URL, latency, DVR, and auto-start/auto-stop settings as needed in YouTube’s stream management guidance.
- Test and monitor. Test with representative motion and audio before relying on the stream, then monitor stream health during operation. YouTube advises pre-stream testing and monitoring; a stable test with a still image alone may not reveal issues that appear in the real content.
Calculate upload headroom for a continuous stream
Your available upload must cover the total outgoing bitrate, not just the primary video setting. YouTube recommends 20% headroom above the combined primary and backup stream bitrates. For example, if primary and backup streams together send 14 Mbps, plan for at least 16.8 Mbps of available upload (14 Mbps × 1.2). This is a planning calculation from YouTube’s guidance, not a guarantee against every connection fluctuation.

Capacity measured while the connection is otherwise idle may not be available once other devices and services use the same network. YouTube cautions that shared network usage can reduce the upload available to the encoder, and that a connectivity disruption can break a stream. Its streaming tips recommend leaving the stated headroom.
- Use a resolution and frame rate your sustained upload can support, with headroom for shared use.
- Check the connection under the conditions expected during the broadcast, not only when the network is quiet.
- Monitor stream health for bitrate instability, dropped frames, or a disconnect, and be ready to lower the output mode if the connection cannot sustain it.
Keep live delivery separate from archive preservation
A 24/7 broadcast and a saved YouTube archive are different requirements. YouTube says it can automatically archive a live stream if it is less than 12 hours. If a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all, so YouTube does not establish that a 24-hour stream will be archived. This is an archive-capture warning, not a stated maximum broadcast duration. If preserving the footage matters, record a local copy and plan how it will be stored. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Troubleshoot bitrate and continuity problems
The stream reports unstable bitrate or drops frames
- Likely cause: The configured rate is too demanding for sustained upload, or other network traffic is using capacity.
- What to do: Check the combined primary and backup bitrate against available upload with 20% headroom. Reduce resolution or frame rate if needed, and test again while the network is under representative load.
YouTube rejects or has trouble ingesting the stream
- Likely cause: The stream’s codec, rate-control behavior, keyframe interval, or stream-key setup does not match the selected configuration.
- What to do: Check the current YouTube settings table for the selected codec and output mode; verify CBR behavior and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds); confirm that FFmpeg is using the intended stream key and RTMPS/RTMP endpoint.
The broadcast disconnects
- Likely cause: A connectivity disruption or a local encoder/server interruption. YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break the stream.
- What to do: Monitor the connection and stream health. If encoding locally, consider a UPS for brief local power failures affecting the encoder or network equipment; it will not fix an ISP outage, a YouTube ingest problem, or a remote-server outage.
The stream ran, but no complete archive appeared
- Likely cause: The stream exceeded 12 hours; YouTube warns it may not capture streams longer than that.
- What to do: Keep a local recording when the content must be preserved, rather than treating YouTube’s archive as the only copy.
Or let it run in the cloud
