To show a countdown between videos on a 24/7 YouTube stream, add it to the program feed your encoder sends to YouTube. The simplest approach is to make a short countdown video and place it between the other videos in the playback sequence. You can also use an encoder scene with a timer graphic, if your software supports that workflow.
YouTube’s Live Control Room manages the live event, but its encoder instructions do not document a native control that inserts a countdown between items. Treat the countdown as part of your stream production—not as a YouTube playlist setting.
Choose how to make the countdown
Use a rendered countdown clip
Create a short video showing the timer, then put that clip between the prerecorded videos in the sequence your encoder plays. This is the most straightforward method: the countdown is simply another segment in the outgoing program. Decide whether its audio should be silent, include music, or use a brief transition, and make those choices in the clip itself.
Use a countdown scene in your encoder
If your encoder can display a timer graphic in a scene, switch to that scene between videos and reset the timer for each interval. The exact setup depends on the encoder and timer source you choose; YouTube’s instructions explain connecting an encoder, not how to configure a countdown scene. OBS is one software encoder option in YouTube’s ecosystem.

Set up the stream and sequence
- Prepare the videos and countdown. Confirm the order, duration, and intended audio for every segment. If you use a timer scene instead of a rendered clip, establish how it will start, stop, and reset before relying on it unattended.
- Connect your encoder to YouTube Live. In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the stream URL and stream key for the event, then enter them in the encoder’s YouTube streaming settings. YouTube describes the encoder’s role simply: “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.” See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Put the countdown in the outgoing program. Arrange the rendered clip between video items, or switch to the timer scene at each transition. This is a production sequence you configure in your playback or encoder workflow; the cited YouTube guidance does not establish a built-in YouTube playlist countdown feature.
- Start the encoder feed and manage the event. Start sending the program from the encoder, then use Live Control Room to manage the live stream. Follow the encoder’s own instructions for its controls and sequence management.
- Test before relying on it. Run representative transitions with the video motion and audio you expect. Check that the timer appears at the right time, resets correctly, and does not leave an unintended gap or overlapping sound.
Check stream health and unattended behavior
YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event. Consult its live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance for settings appropriate to your resolution, frame rate, and connection; there is no single numeric configuration that fits every stream.
- Verify that playback advances through the videos and countdown in the intended order.
- Check that the timer resets at every transition rather than continuing from the previous interval.
- Listen for abrupt cuts, doubled audio, unexpected silence, or audio that continues over the timer when it should stop.
- Watch the encoder and YouTube stream health indicators for interruptions while the stream is live.
For a 24/7 operation, these are practical reliability checks for a continuous-feed workflow, not special YouTube countdown requirements. A timer that works once may still fail after a loop, a reconnect, or a long unattended run, so test the sequence beyond a single transition.

DIY encoder or cloud operation?
A local software encoder gives you direct control over scenes and transitions, but the computer and its connection must remain available for the stream to continue. A managed cloud service is another category for continuous prerecorded-video streams. YouTube’s encoder guidance names Gyre as an example, but does not verify whether it supports countdown interstitials, its pricing, or partner terms. Confirm the specific transition workflow before choosing any service.
