First check whether the playlist is a VLC Video source in OBS. That is OBS’s source type for playing a playlist; a regular Media Source plays an individual media file. Then locate where the picture stops changing: in OBS, in YouTube’s Live Control Room, or only on one viewer’s device. Each points to a different cause. The documented OBS and YouTube checks apply in India as elsewhere; the India context alone does not indicate a regional OBS defect.
Find where the playlist stops advancing
Compare the picture at three checkpoints when the current clip should end. This separates a local playback problem from an encoder or upload problem, and from a delay affecting one viewer.
| What you see | Where to investigate first |
|---|---|
| The same clip remains in OBS preview or program | OBS source type, playlist entries, VLC installation, and source visibility settings. |
| OBS shows the next clip, but YouTube’s Live Control Room preview does not | YouTube stream-health status, encoder output, dropped frames, and upload connection. |
| Live Control Room advances, but one viewer sees a freeze or delay | That viewer’s device, player, and network; a viewer-side issue does not prove the OBS playlist is stuck. |
YouTube recommends checking the stream in Live Control Room and on watch pages or mobile devices. Its Live Control Room displays stream status messages. YouTube: See your live stream’s metrics · YouTube: Streaming tips
Check the OBS source and playlist
Confirm it is a VLC Video source
- In OBS, select the source in the Sources dock and open its properties.
- If you expect several files to play in sequence, verify the source is VLC Video and that the intended files appear in its playlist.
- If it is a regular Media Source, note that this is a different source type with individual-file playback controls, not the playlist source described in OBS’s media-source guide.
Check VLC installation and architecture
VLC Video requires VLC to be installed. If the source is missing or cannot play the playlist, check that VLC is installed; if you run 64-bit OBS, OBS specifies that you need 64-bit VLC. Restart OBS after installing VLC and test the playlist locally.

Review order, looping, and visibility
In VLC Video properties, check the playlist entries and the Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist options against the order you expect. Also inspect Visibility Behaviour. OBS lists “Stop when not visible, restart when visible” as the default. A source hidden during a scene change may therefore stop or restart rather than continue as expected. Temporarily keep it visible through a clip transition to see whether hiding is involved.
If OBS advances but YouTube does not
Do not change playlist settings if the local preview is already moving to the next clip. Check the encoder and connection instead:

- Read the stream-health message in Live Control Room.
- Confirm the encoder’s local video and audio output look correct, and check for encoder errors and high CPU load.
- If the encoder output looks healthy, test outbound internet strength and check for dropped frames.
YouTube’s live metrics guidance recommends checking encoder version, output, errors, CPU load, and outbound internet when diagnosing a stream. For upload capacity, YouTube says the stream’s total bitrate should remain below available upload bandwidth and recommends 20% headroom. YouTube: Streaming tips
OBS describes dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Its connection troubleshooting article suggests starting around 75% of total upload speed for video bitrate. These are starting recommendations, not guarantees for a particular Indian ISP, route, or time of day. OBS Project: Stream Connection Troubleshooting

If only one viewer sees a freeze
Ask another viewer to check the stream, or test the watch page on a different supported device and connection. YouTube notes that network congestion and other factors can delay live programming. A stale picture on one device, by itself, is not evidence that OBS failed to advance the playlist. YouTube: Troubleshoot streaming and video issues
If OBS stutters or cannot render the scene
Only pursue performance changes if OBS indicators or system load suggest that rendering or encoding is falling behind. OBS recommends reducing output resolution or frame rate and simplifying scenes when GPU or rendering load prevents OBS from keeping up. These steps are not the first fix for a playlist configured with the wrong source type. OBS Project: Encoding Performance Troubleshooting

Common symptoms and fixes
| Symptom | Likely area | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Only one file plays, though several were expected | Source type or playlist setup | Confirm VLC Video is used and the intended files are listed. |
| VLC Video is unavailable or cannot play files | VLC dependency | Install VLC and match its architecture to OBS; 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC. |
| Playback changes when switching scenes | Visibility behaviour | Check whether the source stops when hidden; test with it continuously visible. |
| OBS advances but Live Control Room does not | Encoder or upload path | Inspect stream health, encoder output, dropped frames, and upload headroom. |
| Only a particular viewer sees a frozen image | Viewer playback or network | Compare another device and connection before changing OBS. |
| OBS reports rendering or encoding strain | System performance | Reduce resolution or frame rate, or simplify the scene if performance evidence supports it. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps looping uploaded videos while your home computer is off, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than an OBS playlist repair. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not camera-based live streaming. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
What to include if the problem persists
If these checks do not isolate the cause, note your operating system, OBS and VLC versions, whether the source is VLC Video or Media Source, the playlist file types and locations, whether the source is hidden during transitions, and which checkpoint shows the stuck picture. Those details distinguish a local playback issue from a YouTube ingest or viewer-side problem.
