For a 1920×1080 canvas, FFmpeg’s documented filters support this pattern. First check the input’s aspect-ratio metadata: a file’s stored width and height may not tell the whole story.
Frame size, display aspect ratio and pixel shape are different
Frame dimensions are the stored width and height, such as 1920×1080. Their ratio describes the shape of the frame’s pixel grid, but the image’s displayed shape can also depend on the sample aspect ratio (SAR), which describes the shape of each pixel. The display aspect ratio (DAR) is the image’s overall displayed width-to-height ratio.
That distinction matters when footage uses non-square pixels: a video whose stored dimensions appear to have one ratio may be intended to display at another. FFmpeg’s FAQ explains: “Most processing filters in FFmpeg handle the aspect ratio to avoid stretching the image: cropping adjusts the DAR to keep the SAR constant, scaling adjusts the SAR to keep the DAR constant.” See the FFmpeg FAQ before overriding aspect-ratio signaling. YouTube’s live encoder guidance specifies square pixels (SAR 1:1); FFmpeg’s setsar filter can set that value.
Choose a canvas and a framing approach
A 16:9 output is a deliberate landscape choice, not a requirement that every YouTube video use that shape. YouTube says its computer player uses 16:9 as its standard while adapting to other aspect ratios. For uploaded video, YouTube advises against baking bars into the image because they interfere with dynamic player sizing. Live output still needs a deliberate frame and composition.

Use fit and pad when retaining the full picture matters more than filling every pixel. Choose cropping only when the composition can tolerate losing edges. If the input metadata is wrong, correct that deliberately; forcing square pixels without accounting for the intended display shape can make anamorphic footage look wrong.
Fit mixed footage into a 1920×1080 FFmpeg output
This filter chain proportionally reduces or fits the input within 1920×1080, makes dimensions divisible by two, resets sample aspect ratio while scaling, centers the result on a 1920×1080 canvas, and sets square pixels:

Use crop when bars are unacceptable
FFmpeg documents fit_mode=cover as proportional scaling with cropping, and contain as fitting with padding. If you use a cover strategy to fill 16:9, inspect the result: edges will be lost where the source shape differs from the canvas. The interaction and availability of options depend on FFmpeg version.
Use a vertical canvas when the composition is vertical
For an intentional 9:16 output, choose a matching target canvas, such as 1080×1920, then explicitly decide whether to fit and pad or crop. YouTube Live Control Room can stream horizontal 16:9 and vertical 9:16 at the same time; its vertical rendition is a center crop by default. If both views matter, keep important subjects and text in a safe area or configure the vertical layout rather than assuming a center crop will preserve the composition. Check the result before going live
- Inspect the source. Check its dimensions and aspect-ratio metadata before overriding SAR or DAR. A filter cannot repair content that was already distorted or cropped in the source.
- Choose one target canvas. Normalize every input to the same width and height before combining or sending the footage onward. Use even dimensions where required; FFmpeg documents
force_divisible_byfor use withforce_original_aspect_ratio. - Review representative footage. Check both wide and narrow inputs, with motion, and look for unwanted bars, clipped edges, or stretched subjects.
- Test the live setup ahead of the event. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and video, monitoring stream health, and reviewing encoder messages. See its live encoder settings and recommendations.
Troubleshoot common aspect-ratio problems
The subject looks stretched
Inspect both the picture and its SAR/DAR metadata. Non-square pixels are common, and blindly applying setsar=1 can change the display geometry of anamorphic material. Confirm the source’s intended shape before changing its signaling.
Inputs produce different canvas sizes
Apply a consistent target width and height to each input. Fit and pad retains all picture content; crop fills the canvas but removes edges.

The output has unexpected bars or missing edges
Bars are the expected consequence of fitting a differently shaped source while preserving all of it. Missing edges are the expected consequence of cropping to fill. Recheck the source shape and the chosen framing behavior rather than adding stretch.
The filter option is rejected
FFmpeg option support varies by build. Check the installed version’s filter documentation or error output for reset_sar, force_divisible_by, and any fit_mode setting you use; test a representative file before the live event.
The image is still wrong after filtering
Filters cannot restore picture content that was already clipped, nor can they fix distortion baked into the source image. Check the original picture and its metadata first.
