The setup depends on your files sharing compatible stream layouts, and a command alone cannot guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast: test the playlist, monitor FFmpeg and YouTube’s stream health, and clear the rights to every video before going live.
Before you start: check access, files and rights
Confirm that your channel can go live
YouTube requires a verified channel and no live-streaming restrictions within the past 90 days. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select a stream and copy its ingest URL and stream key. Use the current URL and key shown there; do not put the key in a public script, screenshot or repository. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and encoder setup guidance explain the prerequisites and setup.
Make sure you have permission for every playlist item
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can replace the feed with a placeholder, interrupt it or terminate the stream. A licence does not necessarily prevent interruption: the rights holder may also need to allowlist your channel through Content ID. Confirm that your rights cover livestreaming each video and its audio before starting. Hindi-language material is subject to the same rules. See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.
Arrange and inspect the files
Put the videos in the exact order you want them played. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer is the simplest path when files have matching streams, codecs and time bases. Mixed formats may not work with stream copy; they can require a concat filter and re-encoding instead. The demuxer uses duration information to adjust timestamps between files, so inaccurate durations can cause timing or transition artifacts. Check FFmpeg’s concat demuxer documentation.

Build a playlist file for compatible videos
Create a plain-text file named playlist.txt in the same directory as the videos. Use one file entry per line, in playback order:
file 'video-01.mp4'
file 'video-02.mp4'
file 'video-03.mp4'
Use paths that FFmpeg can access from its working directory. For filenames containing apostrophes or unusual characters, use valid concat-demuxer quoting or rename the files to simple names. The entries above are illustrative: verify that your actual files have compatible stream layouts before relying on stream copy.

Choose how FFmpeg will join the files
Matching files: concat demuxer with stream copy
When the files have matching stream parameters, the concat demuxer can present them as one input without decoding and re-encoding. This reduces processing compared with re-encoding, but it is less flexible: stream copy does not repair mismatched codecs, dimensions, frame rates or other stream differences. Verify the output during a test, particularly at file boundaries.
Mismatched files: concat filter with re-encoding
If the files do not match, use FFmpeg’s concat filter and encode a consistent output rather than assuming the demuxer can join arbitrary inputs. Re-encoding requires more CPU or other encoding capacity and deliberate output settings. The appropriate filter graph and encoder parameters depend on the actual files, so there is no universal safe command for an unspecified playlist. Consult FFmpeg’s concat filter documentation and test the exact playlist before broadcasting.

Configure YouTube ingest settings
YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP. Use the ingest URL provided for your stream in Live Control Room, and keep the stream key private. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate recommendations list H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds.
| H.264 output example | YouTube minimum bitrate | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published 2026 guidance values, accessed October 3, 2026; they are not guarantees of viewer quality or a substitute for testing your upload connection. Choose the resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate your source and reliable upload capacity can sustain. YouTube recommends a speed test and a representative test stream with comparable audio and motion. Its exact advice is: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”

Loop the playlist and publish with FFmpeg
FFmpeg documents -stream_loop as an input option for repeating an input stream. With a compatible concat-demuxer playlist, the command shape below shows where to place it and where the YouTube endpoint belongs:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt -c copy -f flv "RTMPS_INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY"
Replace the endpoint placeholder with the RTMPS ingest URL and key supplied in Live Control Room; do not publish a real key. This example is conditional, not a validated universal command: it assumes the playlist is compatible with concat demuxing and stream copy, that your FFmpeg build supports the options, and that the ingest endpoint accepts the output. The exact command may need adjustment for your files, audio/video streams and encoder. FFmpeg’s input options documentation describes -stream_loop; option placement matters because it applies to an input.

For the stream-copy route, -c copy preserves the encoded streams rather than setting an output bitrate or re-encoding. If your files require re-encoding, replace that approach with explicit video and audio encoder choices, CBR configuration, and a two-second keyframe interval; select values that match the chosen resolution, frame rate and available upload capacity. Do not copy a bitrate from the table blindly when the codec or output differs.
Test and monitor the continuous broadcast
- Run a preflight test. Use an unlisted test stream and play through representative sections, including transitions between files. Check that picture, audio and timing behave as expected.
- Check YouTube’s stream health. Watch Live Control Room for warnings or errors while the test is running, and confirm that the intended video and audio arrive.
- Keep the publishing process and connection under observation. For an unattended run, monitor FFmpeg, the network path and YouTube stream health. The cited platform guidance does not certify a particular restart, failover or uptime design; plan and verify any recovery procedure you need.
Know the archive limit for a 24/7 feed
YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. They do not establish that a single continuous stream lasting longer than 12 hours will produce a complete archive. If keeping a full recording matters, plan and verify a separate recording or archive workflow instead of relying on YouTube’s automatic archive for an over-12-hour broadcast.
Common FFmpeg and YouTube Live problems
- Files fail to join or playback breaks at a boundary: the concat demuxer may be receiving files with incompatible stream layouts, codecs or time bases, or inaccurate duration information. Check the files; use a concat filter and re-encoding when needed, then test transitions.
- YouTube reports unstable stream health: the selected output may exceed what your upload can reliably sustain. Run an upload speed test, lower output demands or choose a more suitable bitrate, and repeat the test stream.
- The feed is rejected or does not appear: check that the channel meets YouTube’s live eligibility requirements, the correct ingest URL and key were copied from Live Control Room, and the publishing output is compatible with the selected ingest.
- The stream is interrupted after starting: review YouTube’s stream-health messages and check for a Content ID match. A rights holder may need to allowlist your channel even when you have permission to use the material.
- The archive is incomplete or absent after a long run: automatic archiving is specified for streams under 12 hours, not as a guarantee for longer continuous broadcasts. Use a separate recording plan if a complete archive is essential.
