For a scheduled broadcast, wait for the preview and then select Go live. The key connects the feed; it does not keep the VPS process running or guarantee a 24/7 broadcast.
Before you start
You need access to YouTube Studio for the channel, a VPS with an encoder configured to send a supported audio-video feed, and a way to keep that encoder running. YouTube’s live-stream setup instructions explain how to create or schedule the stream and connect an encoder: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Check that the channel is eligible to live stream and is not restricted. YouTube says a channel restricted from live streaming may not use another channel to live stream on YouTube; check the current eligibility rules in YouTube’s getting-started guide.
- Make sure the VPS encoder supports the URL and protocol you intend to use. YouTube recommends RTMPS when supported.
- Keep the stream key private. YouTube describes stream keys as similar to a stream’s password and address in its stream settings help.
Create or schedule the YouTube stream
- Open YouTube Studio and select Create > Go Live.
- For an immediate encoder stream, open the Stream tab and create a stream if one is not already available. For a planned event, use Manage > Schedule stream.
- Open the stream’s settings in Live Control Room. Copy the Stream URL and Stream key. Keep them private and use only the intended encoder configuration.
For recurring use, YouTube lets you reuse stream settings or create a custom key. A custom key can make a persistent encoder setup easier to manage; it does not remove the need to protect the key.
Choose the URL and configure the VPS encoder
Use RTMPS when the encoder supports it
YouTube may show an ordinary RTMP URL by default. To use RTMPS, retrieve the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room and enter that URL in the encoder. RTMPS carries RTMP over TLS/SSL, and YouTube recommends it where supported. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.

Put the URL and key in their matching fields
- Open the encoder configuration on the VPS.
- Enter the copied server address in the encoder’s server, URL, or ingest field.
- Enter the stream key in the separate stream-key field. If the encoder offers a YouTube preset, follow its field format; otherwise use its separate URL and key fields.
- Save the configuration without exposing the key in a public file, screenshot, log, or shared command. The exact way to store it securely depends on the encoder and VPS setup.
Use the URL and key from the same YouTube stream configuration. Do not substitute the channel URL for the stream URL.
Set encoder output and start the stream
Use an output format supported by YouTube and the encoder. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Choose the bitrate from YouTube’s current table for the resolution and frame rate you are sending rather than using one bitrate for every video. Check the current recommendations for video, audio, resolution, and frame rate at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

- Set the encoder’s video codec to H.264, bitrate mode to CBR, and keyframe interval to two seconds where those options are available.
- Select a bitrate appropriate to the chosen resolution and frame rate using YouTube’s current settings table.
- Start the encoder on the VPS so it begins sending its feed to YouTube.
- For an immediate stream, confirm the feed is reaching YouTube. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room and then click Go live.
- When ending a scheduled broadcast, follow the Studio flow; ending the YouTube event and stopping the encoder may be separate actions.
What makes a VPS stream 24/7—and what the key does not do
YouTube distinguishes the incoming stream feed from the viewer-facing broadcast event. Its Live Streaming API documentation describes a 24/7 channel feed as a stream that can coexist with separate broadcasts: Understanding Broadcasts and Streams. The stream key connects the encoder feed to YouTube; it does not configure VPS uptime, process supervision, or recovery.
Those operational details depend on the VPS host and encoder. Separately configure and verify the encoder’s reconnect behavior, a process manager or watchdog, sufficient network capacity, and a way to monitor ingest. The YouTube key-setup flow does not prescribe a particular Linux distribution, encoder package, service manager, firewall rule, or reconnect policy, so use the documentation for your chosen software and host rather than assuming that entering the key makes the stream uninterrupted.

Troubleshoot common stream-key problems

| No preview or YouTube is not receiving ingest | Verify the current stream key and server URL are in their correct encoder fields, confirm the URL protocol matches what the encoder supports, and check that the encoder is actually sending a supported stream. |
| RTMPS or SSL connection error | Copy the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room rather than assuming the default RTMP address is RTMPS. Confirm the encoder supports RTMPS and check the URL, protocol, and port using YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting guidance. |
