In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go Live, then copy the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room into your encoder. Start the encoder to send video to YouTube; for a scheduled broadcast, wait for its preview and select Go live. A key lets YouTube accept an encoder’s feed, but it does not by itself keep a stream running: the encoder or hosted service must continue sending video.
Before you create a stream key
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. Its getting-started guidance also says users must be at least 16. First-time activation of live streaming can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before a planned broadcast. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and getting-started guidance.
You do not need to buy an encoder just to create a key. You can use compatible streaming software or hardware you already have; YouTube describes both software and hardware encoder setups. For ordinary key creation, RTMP is the conventional workflow. HLS is a specialized option for supported encoder use cases, including HDR or codecs RTMP does not support, and it has higher latency; it is not a prerequisite. See YouTube’s HLS setup instructions.
Create or retrieve the key in YouTube Studio
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live. For an immediate encoder broadcast, open the Stream tab. If this is your first stream, edit the stream details and create the stream. If you have streamed before, YouTube may load your previous settings, including a previously used key.
- Choose whether to start now or schedule. For a scheduled broadcast, select Manage > Schedule stream, then create a stream or reuse settings. Reusing settings can include the existing stream key.
- Copy the stream URL and key. Find these in the stream’s Live Control Room settings. The URL tells the encoder where to send its feed; the key identifies the feed YouTube should accept. YouTube describes the key as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep it private.
- Enter both values in your encoder. Select a YouTube preset if the encoder offers one. Otherwise, paste the stream URL into the encoder’s server or RTMP field and the key into its stream-key field. Save the configuration.
- Start the encoder and check YouTube. Start sending video from the encoder. For an immediate stream, confirm that the feed appears in Live Control Room. For a scheduled stream, connect at the scheduled time, wait for the preview, then select Go live in Live Control Room.
The labels and layout inside third-party encoders vary, but the required information is the same: YouTube’s stream URL and the matching key. YouTube’s encoder setup walkthrough covers creating a stream, configuring an encoder, and going live.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Protect the key and replace it if exposed
Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Do not post it publicly or include it in a screenshot or recording. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room, then replace the old value in every encoder that uses it. Until the encoder has the new key, it cannot authenticate with the reset one. See YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance.
Test before relying on an always-on stream
A valid key confirms where to send the feed; it does not guarantee uninterrupted operation, viewer access, or a usable recording. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder in advance and checking the preview before going live. Test that the event can be opened from your channel and watch page and on a mobile device, inspect audio and video quality, and check any local archive files you expect to keep. YouTube’s live-streaming tips offer additional setup guidance.

Plan separately for a continuous archive
YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not promise automatic archiving for an uninterrupted stream longer than 12 hours. If preserving a recording matters, decide how you will capture or divide the broadcast and verify YouTube’s current behavior before depending on one long stream as your archive. See YouTube’s encoder instructions.
Common problems and fixes
- The encoder cannot connect. Check that the server field contains the stream URL and the key field contains the corresponding key, with no accidental spaces or missing characters. If you reset the key, update the encoder’s saved configuration.
- The key or live option is not available. Confirm that the channel meets YouTube’s eligibility requirements and that live streaming has been activated. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
- The encoder is sending, but the scheduled stream has not started for viewers. Check Live Control Room for the incoming preview. For a scheduled broadcast, select Go live there after the preview appears.
- The stream stops when your computer or encoder stops. A stream key does not run the encoder. The device or service sending the feed has to remain active for the broadcast to continue.
- A long stream is missing an expected archive. YouTube’s stated automatic-archive condition applies to encoder streams under 12 hours. Do not assume a longer uninterrupted run will be archived automatically; arrange separate recording or shorter sessions if you need a dependable copy.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is an always-on YouTube channel playing uploaded video, StreamNeo is an alternative to running an encoder on your own computer. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. It supports video as uploaded up to 4K at 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and gives one free day per account without a card. The Monthly plan is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos streaming to YouTube, not live camera feeds. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
