You can use a headless Raspberry Pi to send a camera, capture-device, file, or network video source to YouTube Live with FFmpeg. Whether it can run continuously at your chosen resolution depends on the source format, the Pi’s available encoder, cooling, storage, network path, and power—not just the board name. This guide covers the setup and the checks needed before relying on it for a 24/7 stream in India.
Plan the source and encoding workload first
Before choosing hardware or writing an FFmpeg command, decide what the Pi will receive and what work it must do. A pre-encoded H.264 source that FFmpeg can pass through is a different workload from video that must be decoded, filtered, resized, or software-encoded.
- Raspberry Pi camera: Use Raspberry Pi’s supported camera software. Its documentation describes FFmpeg/libav output to files or network streams and hardware H.264 encoding where available. It also cautions that some encoder paths can add latency relevant to real-time streaming. Raspberry Pi camera software documentation
- USB capture device: Check that the device is compatible with the selected Pi and Linux image, and verify that the installed FFmpeg build can open its video and audio inputs.
- File or network source: Establish the source’s codec, resolution, frame rate, audio format, and whether it is already suitable for YouTube ingest.
Do not assume a particular Pi model will continuously encode a particular resolution or frame rate. Confirm encoder availability on the actual installed system, then test the full source-to-YouTube workload. Stream-copy avoids encoding when the incoming stream is already compatible; re-encoding is needed when you must change formats or apply filters, and adds processing load.
Prepare a headless Raspberry Pi
- Choose a compatible board and components. Verify the selected model’s power requirements and the compatibility of boot media, camera or capture hardware, and any cooling or case you plan to use. A Raspberry Pi 5 is one possible board to consider, not a guarantee that every source and encoding workload will work continuously.
- Install Raspberry Pi OS Lite with Raspberry Pi Imager. Raspberry Pi recommends OS Lite for headless devices. In Imager, configure the network, remote access, and login credentials before the first boot. Raspberry Pi getting-started documentation
- Connect boot media, suitable power, and a network. Ethernet is optional; Wi-Fi availability depends on the board or adapter. For an installation in India, check local stock and compatibility for your exact model, and plan for the power and network conditions at the site rather than relying on assumptions about a particular ISP or electrical backup.
- Connect remotely. Use SSH or Raspberry Pi Connect for headless access. VNC does not work with Raspberry Pi OS Lite, according to the setup documentation.
Install and verify the camera and FFmpeg stack
Use Raspberry Pi’s supported camera software for a Pi camera rather than copying a legacy raspivid command into a modern image. The camera documentation describes FFmpeg/libav integration, including hardware H.264 encoding where present. Review the camera software guidance for the selected system.

For a camera, USB capture device, or network/file input, verify that the installed FFmpeg build recognizes the input and the intended encoder before configuring YouTube. FFmpeg options and available encoders can vary with the build and protocol, so check the version’s own help output and test locally rather than assuming a command for another Pi image will apply.
Create a YouTube Live stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, create or configure the live event you intend to use.
- Copy the event’s ingest server URL and stream key into the encoder configuration. YouTube’s setup instructions describe entering both values in the encoding software. YouTube: Create a live stream with an encoder
- Treat the stream key like a password. Keep it out of public scripts, screenshots, repositories, and logs. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the Pi configuration.
- Start with a private or unlisted test and check the YouTube live dashboard for ingest status and audio/video health before making the stream public.
Choose YouTube-compatible output settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and RTMPS, the secure form of RTMP. Its bitrate recommendations depend on resolution and frame rate; use the value in the current official table for the exact mode you choose instead of reusing a number from an older tutorial. Set the output resolution and frame rate to a mode the source and Pi can sustain. If FFmpeg must encode or filter video, test the load over a sustained run. Ensure the available upstream capacity has headroom above the encoded bitrate; a connection that only barely matches the target can leave no margin for variation. YouTube transcodes live streams for viewers on different devices and networks, so sending a higher bitrate does not mean every viewer receives that exact rendition.
Because the correct bitrate depends on the chosen resolution and frame rate, there is no single upload-speed number that fits every setup. Check actual upstream performance on the connection where the Pi will run and validate the selected mode in YouTube’s dashboard.

Make FFmpeg restartable and monitor the whole chain
A running FFmpeg process alone does not establish 24/7 continuity. Arrange for the capture process and FFmpeg to be supervised and restarted after failure; record useful logs and monitor network connectivity, temperature, storage, and the source device. After a restart, verify that YouTube again reports an active stream.
FFmpeg documents protocol-level reconnect options for network errors, end of file, retry counts, and delays. Their behavior is protocol-specific, and the installed build’s documentation should be checked before use. These options do not by themselves guarantee that the source, encoder, network, and YouTube ingest all recover together. FFmpeg protocol documentation

Test before leaving the stream unattended
Run a short private or unlisted test first, then a sustained test using the intended source, settings, ambient conditions, and network path. Check YouTube’s dashboard during the run. Test failure cases deliberately before depending on the stream:
- Restart the router and confirm the process recovers and YouTube ingest becomes active again.
- Interrupt the WAN connection, restore it, and check whether the supervisor and FFmpeg reconnect as expected.
- Reboot the Pi and confirm the required services start without manual intervention.
- Disconnect the source and confirm you can identify the failure in logs and restore video and audio.
- Check temperature and storage during an extended run, especially in the actual enclosure and ambient conditions.
No particular Raspberry Pi build, India internet plan, power backup, or 24/7 performance result is established here. Treat them as installation-specific variables and make the final decision from your own sustained tests.

Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely area | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not detect the stream | Ingest configuration or connectivity | Confirm the server URL and stream key in the encoder, check that the key is current, and inspect FFmpeg logs and YouTube’s live dashboard. |
| Video works but audio does not | Source selection or output configuration | Verify the input exposes the intended audio device or track and that the encoder output includes it; check dashboard audio health during a test. |
| Stream drops when the network blips | Reconnect and supervision | Check protocol-appropriate FFmpeg reconnect behavior for the installed build and ensure an external supervisor restarts failed processes. Confirm end-to-end recovery in YouTube. |
| Unstable output under sustained load | Encoding workload, heat, or upstream capacity | Check whether FFmpeg is re-encoding or filtering, reduce the output mode if needed, inspect temperature, and test the connection’s sustained upstream capacity. |
| Legacy camera command fails | Software generation mismatch | Use the supported camera software workflow for the installed Raspberry Pi OS and verify the available FFmpeg input and encoder. |
