How to Make a YouTube Podcast Stream With a Now Playing Screen

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To make a YouTube podcast stream with a now playing screen, create a YouTube live event, send audio and a designed scene from OBS, and add a compatible overlay as an OBS Browser Source. The overlay is separate from YouTube: it must be able to read the player or metadata source carrying your episode. If it cannot, a manually updated title and artwork are a dependable fallback.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube says first-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to enable; its stated requirements include channel verification, no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and a streamer age of at least 16. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance for current rules.
  • OBS Studio and a stable upload connection suited to the resolution and bitrate you choose.
  • Your podcast audio source: a microphone, captured application audio, or a media source such as a prepared episode file.
  • An image or scene background, episode title and, if you want automatic updates, a now-playing overlay compatible with your exact audio source.
  • Rights to livestream the podcast audio, intro music, artwork, and any video, including permission for YouTube to retain an archived replay where applicable.

A USB microphone is only needed if you are capturing or recording audio live; it is not required when you already have a finished episode or working audio feed.

Create the YouTube live event and protect the stream key

  1. In YouTube Studio, choose Create > Go Live. Create a new stream or schedule one, then enter its title, description, visibility, and other event details.
  2. In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key. YouTube describes the key as the value that tells your encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Treat it like a password: do not show or share it publicly. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room.
  3. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube if available, or enter the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room.

For a scheduled stream, you will start the encoder first, check the incoming preview in Live Control Room, and then click Go live.

Build the podcast scene in OBS

Add audio and a readable visual layout

  1. Create a scene for the podcast in OBS.
  2. Add the audio source you will actually use: a microphone, captured application audio, or an existing media source. Watch the OBS audio meters while it plays or speaks.
  3. Add episode artwork or a background image, then place the show name, episode title, and any other useful text in the composition. Keep essential text large and uncluttered enough to read on a phone.
  4. In the Sources dock, arrange and resize sources so the episode title and artwork remain visible and the overlay does not cover captions or other important information.

OBS scenes can combine audio, images, text, media, and browser pages; a static image with clear episode information is often enough for a podcast. Add motion only if it serves the show rather than making the information harder to read.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Add a now-playing overlay

  1. Choose an overlay provider that supports the audio player or metadata source you plan to use. Options described by their providers include the OBS community resource Music on stream, which lists YouTube and YouTube Music among its supported inputs, and Glitch Studios’ Now Playing overlay, which describes displaying artist, title, and album art.
  2. Confirm the overlay can read the exact source carrying your podcast audio and can show episode-level information, not just song metadata. A standard podcast RSS feed, local audio file, YouTube video, and YouTube Music player expose different metadata and may require different integrations. Provider-listed compatibility is not a guarantee for every source or setup.
  3. Copy the overlay URL supplied by its provider. In OBS, add a Browser Source and paste the URL. Set the Browser Source width and height to the intended viewport, then position and size it in your scene. Use transparency if the overlay supports it and you want the background to show through.
  4. Test whether the overlay displays the correct title and artwork and updates when the episode changes. Song identification can fail with muted or non-music audio and difficult-to-fingerprint tracks; an integration that reads episode metadata may work better when one exists.

If automatic detection reads the wrong player or fails to update, use an OBS text source and image source that you update manually, or an overlay page that lets you set the episode title and artwork. For a prerecorded episode, a static scene with its artwork and title avoids making automatic detection a requirement.

Set encoder output and test before going live

YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS where available and describes H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval. Choose a resolution and bitrate your upload connection can sustain; a podcast scene with static artwork usually does not need an unnecessarily high bitrate or elaborate motion graphics. Check YouTube’s current live stream settings rather than copying a setting that your connection cannot maintain.

  • Run a private or unlisted test where appropriate before promoting the event.
  • Confirm OBS audio meters move and the correct audio reaches YouTube.
  • Check the Live Control Room preview for the right artwork, episode title, and overlay position.
  • Verify that the overlay updates when the episode changes, if automatic updates are part of your setup.
  • Listen for echo, duplicate audio, or unintended desktop sound, and correct the source routing before going live.
  • Monitor stream health during the event. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring rather than assuming the encoder is working correctly.

Start the OBS encoder, wait for the scheduled event’s preview in Live Control Room, then click Go live. When finished, stop the encoder and end the event in Live Control Room. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; check current archive behavior before relying on it for a longer broadcast.

Copyright and replay permissions matter

YouTube scans live streams for third-party material. A match can trigger a warning and placeholder image; if the material remains, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. Even licensed material can be interrupted if the rights owner has not added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
