To stream a playlist of local video files to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, create a concat-demuxer playlist, send it to the RTMP or RTMPS endpoint and stream key shown in YouTube Studio, then check the preview and stream health before going live. Stream copying works only when the files have compatible stream layouts, codecs and time bases; mixed files generally need re-encoding.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel with access to Live Control Room.
- FFmpeg built with the encoders and transport you plan to use. The example below uses
libx264, AAC and RTMPS; not every FFmpeg build supports every option. - Local video files and enough sustained upload capacity for the selected stream bitrate.
- The stream URL and stream key for the stream you create or select in Live Control Room.
A stream key is a credential: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your YouTube stream. Keep it out of public scripts, screenshots and repositories. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room.
Create a playlist file
Put a text file named playlist.txt alongside the videos, or use paths appropriate to your setup. For automatic concat-script recognition, the first line must be exactly ffconcat version 1.0.

Its safe mode is enabled by default; relative paths are practical and avoid needing to disable that protection. Consult the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation for path and script details.

Check compatibility first
Stream copying can avoid re-encoding, but the concat demuxer requires the files to have the same streams, codecs and time bases. Different resolutions or frame rates can also make a copied output unsuitable for the target stream. Incorrect or missing duration metadata can produce timing errors, gaps or artifacts because later timestamps depend on preceding file durations. Use corrected duration directives only when a file’s stored duration is missing or inaccurate.
If the sources do not match, use FFmpeg’s concat filter and re-encode to a common output format rather than assuming the demuxer will make them compatible. The FFmpeg concat filter documentation describes that alternative.
Get YouTube’s stream URL and key
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or select a scheduled stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from the stream’s encoder details.
- Use the exact endpoint supplied for that stream; do not assume a fixed URL. Prefer the RTMPS endpoint when your FFmpeg build supports it. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL and recommends it.

Choose output settings for YouTube
YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Select a bitrate for the chosen codec, resolution and frame rate using YouTube’s live encoder settings; there is no single bitrate that fits every stream. Your connection needs enough sustained upload capacity for the chosen output.
The example uses H.264 at 4,500 kb/s and a 60-frame GOP. Those are illustrative values, not a universal YouTube recommendation: at 30 fps, 60 frames is two seconds, while at a different frame rate it represents a different interval. Adjust the GOP and bitrate for your actual frame rate and YouTube’s settings for the selected format.
Start FFmpeg
This template assumes compatible input files, a working libx264 encoder, AAC support and an RTMPS endpoint accepted by your FFmpeg build. Replace the playlist, endpoint and key. Do not publish the real key.

The endpoint format shown is only a placeholder. Use the complete server URL and stream key format required by the values in Live Control Room and your FFmpeg build. YouTube’s bitrate and encoder recommendations vary by resolution, frame rate and codec.
Verify the preview before going live
- Start FFmpeg and confirm it is encoding and sending data without repeated errors.
- Return to Live Control Room and wait for the stream preview and health information.
- Check that the picture, motion and audio are correct. Test with representative content, not just a static or silent sample.
- Start the broadcast from Live Control Room when the preview and stream health are acceptable.
YouTube says encoder streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived after they end. That does not establish reliable operating guidance for continuous 24/7 use; do not treat this setup as a guarantee of uninterrupted all-day streaming.

FFmpeg rejects the playlist or cannot open a file
- Check that
playlist.txtis in the working directory or provide its correct path. - Check each quoted file path for spelling and access permissions. With
-safe 1, use safe relative paths where practical. - Ensure the first line is exactly
ffconcat version 1.0if relying on automatic script recognition.
The output has glitches, gaps or broken timing at a file boundary
Confirm that the files share streams, codecs and time bases, and inspect their duration metadata. If the inputs are not compatible, use the concat filter and re-encode to consistent settings. Correct duration directives only when the stored duration is actually inaccurate or missing.

YouTube does not receive the stream
- Confirm that you copied the URL and key for the currently selected stream in Live Control Room, with no missing characters.
- Check that the key has not been reset since you copied it. If it was exposed, reset it and update the encoder command.
- Check that the installed FFmpeg build supports the chosen encoder and RTMPS connection. If it does not, use a supported build or the available RTMP endpoint.
The preview reports poor stream health or the picture is unstable
Compare the outgoing codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate and keyframe interval with YouTube’s settings for that format. Check sustained upload capacity, and test again with representative motion and audio. Lower the output bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot sustain the selected rate.
Audio is missing or does not match
Check whether each playlist item has an audio stream and whether the concat inputs have matching stream layouts. Confirm FFmpeg’s audio encoder and output settings, then listen to the Live Control Room preview before starting the broadcast.

Only stream video and audio you have the rights or permission to use. A successful FFmpeg connection does not establish that a video is authorized, nor does it ensure that a channel will qualify for monetization. Review YouTube’s applicable Community Guidelines and monetization policies for copyright and reused-content requirements. Avoid assuming that repeatedly broadcasting a playlist makes reused material eligible for monetization.
