One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor an FFmpeg music stream, handle three different failures separately: loop the file so it does not stop at the end, use FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer recovery options to retry a failed publishing output, and use a process supervisor if FFmpeg itself exits. These measures can help FFmpeg resume sending data, but they do not guarantee an uninterrupted YouTube event or viewer session.
What “automatic reconnect” needs to recover
A music livestream can stop for different reasons, and no single FFmpeg option handles all of them:
- The audio file reaches its end: loop the input with
-stream_loop -1and read it at real-time speed with-re. - The connection to YouTube ingest temporarily fails: use FFmpeg’s FIFO output muxer recovery options to attempt recovery.
- The FFmpeg process exits: an external process supervisor must start it again. A new process starting does not guarantee that YouTube will preserve the same live event or viewer session.
The HTTP protocol options named -reconnect and related variants are for HTTP input connections, not a general fix for an RTMP publishing output. See the FFmpeg Protocols documentation and the FFmpeg Formats documentation for the FIFO muxer.
Example FFmpeg command for a looping music file
This illustrative command sends an audio file with a generated black 720p video background. Replace the RTMPS address with the current server URL and stream-key format shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the stream key like a password.

-map 1:v -map 0:a
-c:v libx264 -tune stillimage -pix_fmt yuv420p -g 60
-c:a aac -b:a 128k
-f fifo -fifo_format flv
-attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1
"rtmps://<YouTube-ingest-url>/<stream-key>"
The FIFO settings follow FFmpeg’s documented recovery example: enable recovery attempts with -attempt_recovery 1 and set the wait between attempts to one second with -recovery_wait_time 1. They request retries after temporary output failure; they are not a promise that reconnection will succeed or be seamless. The command is an illustrative starting point, not a tested configuration. Check the options and stream mapping against your installed FFmpeg build.
Check the audio and video inputs
The command loops the audio input and generates a static black video input. Confirm that the generated video continues for the intended broadcast and that the output does not end unexpectedly. -shortest can stop an output when its shortest stream ends, so validate its behavior with your exact inputs and FFmpeg build. If you use a different visual, provide a suitable video input and map it explicitly. Check the installed FFmpeg documentation for the exact behavior of -stream_loop.

Match the output to YouTube
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest and lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video codecs. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. In the example, -g 60 means 60 video frames between keyframes; at 30 fps, that is two seconds. Choose the resolution, frame rate, bitrate, codec, and protocol for your actual stream and connection rather than treating the example’s 720p video and 128 kbps audio as universal requirements. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance.
Set up YouTube Live Control Room and test recovery
- Get the current ingest details. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key for the stream. YouTube describes the key as the credential that lets an encoder send its feed. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup steps.
- Protect the key. Do not publish it in a script, screenshot, log, or public repository. If it is exposed, replace it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
- Review auto-start and auto-stop. Check the stream’s settings before relying on an encoder reconnect. YouTube says reusing stream settings also copies the auto-start and auto-stop selections, so test the behavior for the actual stream. See YouTube’s live stream settings guide.
- Run an unlisted or private test. Confirm that the preview appears, audio and video are correct, and Live Control Room reports healthy stream status. YouTube recommends previewing before going live, checking the watch page, monitoring stream health, and testing backup-encoder failover. See YouTube’s live streaming tips.
- Test the failure you want to recover from. A file loop, a temporary output interruption, and an FFmpeg process restart are different tests. Verify each relevant behavior without assuming that a successful output retry means viewers experienced no interruption.
If FFmpeg exits, restart it separately
FIFO recovery addresses output failures while FFmpeg is running. It cannot recover a process that has terminated. For that case, configure an operating-system process supervisor to restart the command, then test the restart on an unlisted or private stream. The cited YouTube guidance does not establish that a newly started FFmpeg process will attach to the same uninterrupted viewer session; check the resulting Live Control Room and watch-page behavior.

Troubleshoot a YouTube stream that will not reconnect
FFmpeg stops when the music ends
Confirm that -stream_loop -1 is applied to the audio input and that FFmpeg is reading it at real-time pace with -re. Check for another input or output condition that ends the command, including the duration of generated video and the effect of -shortest.
The output fails but does not recover
Check that the FIFO muxer is applied to the output with -f fifo -fifo_format flv and that the recovery options are present. A retry attempt can still fail if the network remains unavailable, the ingest address is wrong, or the publishing session cannot be re-established. Do not substitute HTTP input -reconnect flags for output recovery.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
YouTube rejects the encoder feed
Verify the current server URL and stream key in Live Control Room. If a third-party encoder reports a startup error, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance advises copying the current stream key from Live Control Room and updating the encoder. See YouTube’s live stream troubleshooting page.
The stream starts but has unhealthy audio or video
Check the stream preview and health indicators, then verify the mapped inputs, codecs, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval. Test the exact command and source files; a syntactically valid command can still map the wrong stream or produce an unsuitable output.

A restart creates a new or interrupted viewing experience
Process restart and YouTube session continuity are separate. Inspect the stream’s auto-start and auto-stop selections, test what viewers see after a restart, and do not assume that a supervisor can preserve a single continuous event.
Plan around YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube automatically archives streams shorter than 12 hours. For longer broadcasts, do not assume a single event will be archived or behave as one continuous stream indefinitely; check current Live Control Room behavior and plan the broadcast accordingly. See YouTube’s encoder livestream setup guide.
Or let it run in the cloud
If maintaining an FFmpeg process and home connection is the part you want to avoid, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. Start a StreamNeo free day.
