Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteRun FFmpeg as the main process of a systemd service, then set Restart=on-failure and a deliberate RestartSec= delay. This makes systemd relaunch FFmpeg after qualifying failures; it does not prove that YouTube has resumed the public broadcast. Check both the service and the actual stream.
What systemd can—and cannot—recover
systemd supervises the FFmpeg process. With Restart=on-failure, it retries after a non-zero exit, qualifying abnormal signal, operation timeout, or watchdog timeout. A clean exit is not considered a failure under that policy. A deliberate systemctl stop also remains stopped rather than being undone by the restart policy. See the systemd.service documentation.
This is process recovery, not a guarantee of broadcast recovery. systemd does not verify that YouTube accepted FFmpeg’s connection or that viewers can see the intended live broadcast. After a restart, check FFmpeg’s logs and confirm the stream in YouTube Studio or at the viewer endpoint.
Create a systemd service for FFmpeg
Use a regular service and let systemd track FFmpeg directly as its main process. The following is an illustrative starting point, not a universal or tested FFmpeg command:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
# /etc/systemd/system/youtube-ffmpeg.service
[Unit]
Description=FFmpeg YouTube livestream
Wants=network-online.target
After=network-online.target
[Service]
Type=simple
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg [input and encoding options] -f flv rtmp://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2/REDACTED_STREAM_KEY
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=5s
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
- Confirm the FFmpeg executable path on the host;
/usr/bin/ffmpegmay not be correct for your installation. - Replace the bracketed input and encoding placeholder with the options for your actual source and output.
- Replace the redacted key with the appropriate secret, but do not publish or commit a real YouTube stream key. Store credentials using a protected mechanism suitable for your host.
RestartSec=5sis an example delay, not a universal recommendation. Choose a pause that avoids an immediate retry loop and gives transient problems time to clear.
Avoid adding an unnecessary shell or backgrounding layer around FFmpeg: if systemd tracks a wrapper rather than the encoder, it may not supervise the process you intend. FFmpeg options vary by build. Its official documentation follows the newest revision and advises users of older installations to consult their local documentation.
Load, enable, and monitor the service
- Save the unit at
/etc/systemd/system/youtube-ffmpeg.service. - Load the unit and start it now while enabling it to start at boot:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload sudo systemctl enable --now youtube-ffmpeg.service - Check the service state:
systemctl status youtube-ffmpeg.service - Follow its logs while diagnosing a failure or confirming a restart:
journalctl -u youtube-ffmpeg.service -f - After changing the unit file, run
sudo systemctl daemon-reloadand restart the service withsudo systemctl restart youtube-ffmpeg.service. Then verify the service and public broadcast separately.
Choose a restart policy and retry delay
| Setting | Behavior | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
Restart=on-failure |
Retries after qualifying failures, but not after a clean exit. | A long-running stream where an unexpected failure should be retried, while a clean end should remain visible. |
Restart=always |
Retries after clean exits as well as failures. | A process that should be relaunched after any exit. Stop it through systemd when you intentionally want it to remain stopped. |
RestartSec= |
Sets the pause before an automatic restart. | Choose a delay appropriate to the expected outage; a pause can reduce rapid retry churn, but does not fix the underlying fault. |
For a continuously running service, systemd’s service manual recommends on-failure. Select always only if restarting after a clean exit is intentional. Neither setting can override an administrator’s deliberate stop through systemd.

Account for systemd start-rate limits
Automatic retries are subject to start-rate limiting. If FFmpeg fails repeatedly, systemd can stop attempting starts and leave the unit failed. The relevant controls include StartLimitIntervalSec= and StartLimitBurst=; their accepted options and behavior depend on the systemd release installed on the host. Check man systemd.unit locally before adding version-specific settings, and choose limits that make sense for the failure pattern you expect. The systemd.unit documentation describes unit settings and start limits.
If the start limit has been reached, inspect the logs and correct the likely cause before clearing the failed state. When restarting is appropriate, reset the state and rate-limit counter, then start the service:

sudo systemctl reset-failed youtube-ffmpeg.service
sudo systemctl start youtube-ffmpeg.service
systemctl reset-failed clears the failed state and start-rate counter; it does not repair a bad input, network problem, invalid credential, or encoding error. See the systemctl documentation.
Know the limits of automatic restart
The restart policy responds when the service process exits or times out. It does not diagnose a stalled YouTube connection if FFmpeg keeps running without exiting. A hung process may therefore require an additional health check or watchdog design that monitors progress; that design must be chosen and tested for the particular FFmpeg command. Do not treat a running systemd unit by itself as proof of a healthy outgoing stream.

An FFmpeg-user mailing-list post dated January 6, 2025 describes an RTSP camera-recording setup that used Restart=always and RestartSec=5 after a timeout. The poster reported retrying while a camera was unavailable and resuming recording when it returned, but also expressed uncertainty about whether FFmpeg could handle the behavior alone. That is one author’s account of an RTSP recording case, not validation of YouTube livestream recovery: the January 6, 2025 mailing-list post.
Troubleshoot common restart problems
- The service does not start: Check
systemctl status youtube-ffmpeg.serviceandjournalctl -u youtube-ffmpeg.service -f. Confirm the executable path, unit syntax, input options, and protected credential configuration. - FFmpeg exits repeatedly: Read the FFmpeg error in the journal and address its cause first.
RestartSec=spaces retries; it does not correct a persistent input, network, credential, or encoding fault. - systemd stops retrying: The unit may have reached its start-rate limit. Inspect the journal, fix the cause where possible, then use
systemctl reset-failedand start again if appropriate. - The unit is active but viewers do not see a live stream: A running process is not confirmation that YouTube resumed the broadcast. Check FFmpeg output and verify the intended broadcast in YouTube Studio or through the viewer endpoint.
- FFmpeg remains running but output has stalled: A restart-on-exit policy may not detect this. Add a command-specific health check or watchdog only after deciding how to identify stalled output and testing the recovery behavior.
- The unit file changed but behavior did not: Reload systemd with
sudo systemctl daemon-reload, then restart the service and check its status and logs.
