Your computer and internet connection must stay on for the whole stream. For unattended, continuous playback, a cloud service can run the stream without a streaming computer at home.
Choose between a local loop and cloud streaming
The right setup depends on whether you can leave a computer running. OBS gives you direct control over a video or playlist, but playback and encoding depend on your computer and connection. A cloud service runs the stream remotely. YouTube’s encoder directory lists Gyre for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded videos; that listing establishes its use case, not its current pricing or commercial terms.
| Option | Where it runs | Looping and operation | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | Cloud | Upload videos, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; it loops uploaded videos and can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. | Continuous prerecorded streams without a computer running at home. Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps uses one flat price per slot. |
| OBS Studio | Your computer | Loop a Media Source or use VLC Video for a looping playlist. You set up and monitor the encoder. | A one-off or managed stream when you can keep the computer and connection online. |
| Gyre | Cloud | YouTube lists it for 24/7 prerecorded streaming; detailed controls and current terms are not established here. | Creators considering a cloud workflow who will check current service details directly. |
For a long-running YouTube stream, StreamNeo is the first cloud option to consider: it runs continuously from the cloud, handles uploaded video at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day.
Check YouTube Live eligibility and create the stream
- Confirm your channel is verified and has had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube says first-time live streaming activation can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in the stream settings. The exact labels may vary as YouTube updates Studio; follow the current Live Control Room fields.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone with access to it may be able to send a broadcast to your channel. If you think it has been exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before streaming.
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance describes entering the stream URL and key into your encoder, checking the preview, and starting the stream.

Set up a repeating video in OBS
- Open OBS Studio and create a scene for the broadcast.
- In the Sources panel, select + and add Media Source. Give it a clear name, select your local video file, and enable Loop. OBS Media Source supports common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, and WebM; check that your chosen file plays correctly before going live.
- For a playlist rather than one repeating file, add a VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed for this source to appear in OBS. Add the files in the order you want them to play and verify the transitions.
- In OBS stream settings, select YouTube if available, or enter the stream URL and key from Live Control Room. Prefer RTMPS where offered.
- Set video and audio options based on YouTube’s current encoder guidance and the stable upload capacity of your connection. Do not choose a bitrate by guesswork: use YouTube’s current settings table for your resolution and frame rate, then leave headroom for normal network variation.
- Start the OBS stream and check the YouTube preview and stream health before making the stream public or sharing it. Listen for audio and watch for dropped frames or playback problems.
Choose encoder settings and test the actual content
YouTube’s general RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video options; AAC or MP3 audio; and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. These are general encoder recommendations, not a bitrate preset for every resolution or connection. Use YouTube’s current live encoder settings to choose the resolution and bitrate for your specific stream.
- Test with content that has similar motion and audio to the real video. A static test image will not reveal how a high-motion game capture or music-heavy video behaves.
- Check YouTube’s preview and stream health before promotion. Watch audio levels as well as the picture; a successful connection does not guarantee that viewers can hear the intended audio.
- Use a stable wired connection where possible, and avoid saturating the upload connection with other traffic while encoding.
- For a long broadcast, monitor the stream periodically. OBS’s loop control restarts the media file, but the documented loop behavior does not by itself establish automatic recovery after a computer, power, or network failure.
Know the archive limit before running for hours
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If preserving a replay matters, keep a local recording as a backup rather than relying on the automatic archive. Details are in YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance.

Check rights and YouTube policy before looping
Looping a video does not change your responsibility for its contents. YouTube’s livestream terms require the creator to have the necessary worldwide rights for livestream content, including music licensing rights. YouTube’s live-streaming guidance also says live content must comply with its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service.
Before broadcasting, confirm that you have permission for every video, song, performance, image, and other element in the stream. A video being available online or owned by you does not, by itself, establish that you have the rights needed for a public livestream. Use the copyright safety checklist as a practical preflight aid.
