Then verify the incoming broadcast in YouTube Studio—an active systemd process alone does not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
What systemd will—and will not—keep running
systemd can start FFmpeg at boot, supervise its process, restart it after certain failures, and collect its output in the journal. That means an SSH disconnect does not stop the service. It does not mean the stream is immune to interruption: systemd cannot repair a revoked key, unreadable or unsuitable media, a broken network path, an exhausted VPS transfer allowance, or a YouTube-side broadcast problem.
The setup below is for a Linux VPS you administer. Commands assume a systemd-based distribution and a unit named youtube-ffmpeg.service; package names, systemd versions, and file paths can differ, so check your distribution’s documentation and installed FFmpeg build.
Choose and test the FFmpeg stream before making a service
Confirm the input and output
Install FFmpeg from your distribution’s supported package source or another build you have verified. Decide whether the input is a local file or a live input URL, and confirm that the eventual service account will be able to read it. For a prerecorded file, the command must read at real-time speed for a live broadcast; looping is appropriate only when repeated playback is intended. Depending on the source tracks and your desired output, you may encode them or stream-copy compatible tracks. The output must be muxed in a format YouTube accepts and sent to the ingest endpoint selected in YouTube Studio.

FFmpeg commands depend on the input, installed build, and desired output, so there is no single safe copy-and-paste command for every VPS. First run your actual command in a controlled session. Confirm video, audio, frame size, frame rate, codec, and the YouTube ingest connection before placing it under systemd. FFmpeg documents its command structure and supported protocols at FFmpeg’s documentation.
Use current YouTube encoder settings
YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends choosing settings that fit the connection, testing with representative motion and audio, and monitoring stream health. The current page, accessed October 3, 2026, lists these H.264 recommended bitrates:

These are recommendations, not universal minimums or a complete encoding recipe. The official table also gives minimum rates and recommendations for other codecs. YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS workflows, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant-bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the complete table and current ingest options.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, describing it as “a secure extension to the popular RTMP video protocol.” Select the server URL and stream key for the broadcast in YouTube Studio, and treat the key like a password. Do not put a real key in a public repository or share it. A community example also warns against committing a real key; it is an example, not official validation of a particular FFmpeg command: community example.

Create a restricted account and protect the stream key
- Create a dedicated service account. Use an unprivileged Linux account for FFmpeg instead of running the encoder as root. Grant it only the permissions it needs, including read access to the source media and any necessary working directories.
- Choose explicit paths. Use absolute paths for the FFmpeg executable and media. Make sure the service account can traverse the parent directories, not just read the media file itself.
- Store credentials separately. Keep the key in a root-managed file with narrowly restricted permissions, not in a public script, shell history, or world-readable unit. Check whether your chosen FFmpeg command or logging setup might print the complete ingest URL, including the key.
- Account for systemd environment-file syntax. If you use an environment file to supply a credential, follow the parsing rules for your installed systemd version. Restrict the file’s permissions and verify that the service can read it without exposing it to other users.
Write the systemd unit
Create /etc/systemd/system/youtube-ffmpeg.service as a root-managed file. This template shows the service structure, not a complete FFmpeg command: replace the account, directory, and command with values you have tested. Keep the real key out of ExecStart.

Ubuntu’s Noble service manual documents restart behavior and start-rate limits at Ubuntu Manpages: systemd.service(5). Check the manual for your VPS’s distribution and version before relying on a directive. Repeated quick failures can hit systemd’s start limits, so a restart policy is not a substitute for finding the underlying cause.

Reload systemd, enable the service, and inspect it
- Ask systemd to reload unit files:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload - Enable the service at boot:
sudo systemctl enable youtube-ffmpeg.service - Start it now:
sudo systemctl start youtube-ffmpeg.service - Inspect process state and recent output:
sudo systemctl status youtube-ffmpeg.service, thensudo journalctl -u youtube-ffmpeg.service -n 100 --no-pager. - Check YouTube Studio. Confirm that the intended broadcast has an incoming stream and inspect its preview and stream health. Test with representative video motion and audio before relying on the setup, and monitor stream health during operation.
- After changing the unit, reload and restart: run
sudo systemctl daemon-reload, thensudo systemctl restart youtube-ffmpeg.service. Recheck its status and logs.
active (running) means systemd sees a process; it does not establish that YouTube accepted the stream, that the right broadcast is selected, or that viewers can see healthy media.
Troubleshoot the failure at the layer where it occurs

Estimate VPS capacity without guessing a universal plan
Start with the bitrate for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you intend to send, then test sustained outbound throughput with headroom above that rate. A speed test is only a snapshot: the route to YouTube, contention, provider limits, and long-duration behavior matter too. If FFmpeg encodes in software, check CPU use under the intended workload; if it stream-copies compatible tracks, the processing demands differ. Account for media storage and the provider’s current egress or transfer allowance.

There is no verified Indian VPS provider or plan here that can be named as a universal fit. Compare current provider terms and run your own preflight rather than choosing by a claimed region or nominal port speed alone. YouTube likewise advises matching encoder settings to the connection and testing before a live event.
