Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou can keep prerecorded or scheduled video live on YouTube while your computer is off by running a media playlist and encoder on a cloud VM, then sending the feed to YouTube Live Control Room. The VM method gives you control but requires setup, monitoring and recovery planning. A managed playout service is simpler; StreamNeo is the first option to consider for a YouTube-only loop because it runs from the cloud, supports uploaded video up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and includes a free first day.
Choose the right kind of cloud setup
There are two different architectures that are easy to confuse:
| Route | What it does | Best fit | Key trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cloud VM plus encoder | You run a playlist or looping media source and an encoder such as FFmpeg on a virtual machine (VM). It pushes one live feed directly to YouTube. | A creator who wants control over the media pipeline and is comfortable administering a server. | You handle the process, security, monitoring, recovery, storage and provider billing. |
| Managed live-video API | A provider accepts an input and transcodes/packages it into output formats for delivery or storage. | A larger broadcast pipeline that needs managed ingest, transcoding or multiple delivery profiles. | It is not automatically a direct-to-YouTube playout service; check the documented output path and active-resource charges. |
| Managed YouTube playout service | A vendor hosts uploaded media, schedules or loops it, and sends it to YouTube. | A creator who wants continuous prerecorded playout without maintaining a VM and encoder. | You depend on the vendor’s features, security and terms, which you should verify before granting access or paying. |
Google Cloud’s Live Stream API is the second type, not a turnkey replacement for a VM that pushes directly to YouTube. Its documented workflow accepts SRT or RTMP input, transcodes to HLS or DASH, and saves output to Cloud Storage; Mumbai (asia-south1) is listed as a supported region. See Google Cloud’s API overview and supported regions. A basic YouTube loop usually calls for either a VM encoder or a managed YouTube playout service.
Check YouTube eligibility and prepare the stream
YouTube’s current live-streaming guidance says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Live content remains subject to YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. If you have never enabled live streaming, initial activation can take up to 24 hours. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and encoder setup guide before scheduling a launch.

- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and enable live streaming if the channel has not used it before.
- Create or schedule a stream. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- Keep the stream key secret: it is a credential that lets an encoder send a feed to your channel. Restrict who can access it, keep it out of public scripts, screenshots, logs, source control and support posts, and reset it if compromised. YouTube explains stream key settings at its stream settings help page.
- Choose your cloud route, prepare the media source and configure its encoder with the exact destination details from Live Control Room.
- Start the feed, then check the Live Control Room preview and stream health before sharing the watch page.
Build a direct-to-YouTube loop on a cloud VM
The basic arrangement is a VM with access to your media files, a playlist or looping source that continues after each clip ends, and an encoder that sends one continuous feed to YouTube. A supervisor should restart a failed encoder process, while monitoring should alert you if the process exits or YouTube ingest is lost. These are implementation recommendations, not a guarantee of uptime; stability depends on the source, encoder, network, process supervision and channel standing.
1. Select and price the VM for the actual workload
Choose the cloud provider and region based on your expected audience and operating needs, then calculate the instance, persistent disk, public IP, outbound transfer and any GPU/accelerator or managed encoding separately. No like-for-like monthly price for a basic always-on India VM is established here, and a general estimate is not a substitute for a provider calculator quote tied to your configuration.
Workload matters more than a generic minimum VM size. If the uploaded media already has the resolution, frame rate and codec you intend to send, the server may be able to relay or remux it with less encoding work. If it must transcode, or you need several output profiles, CPU/GPU requirements change. No minimum VM size or provider benchmark is established for this setup.

2. Put media and a continuous playlist in place
Store the recordings where the server can read them, and define a playlist that feeds the next clip or repeats the intended material instead of stopping at the end of a file. Verify that the playlist has usable audio and video throughout. Arrange a process supervisor to restart the encoder after a crash, plus an alert for process exit and loss of YouTube ingest. Keep a documented procedure for restarting the process and replacing the stream key if it must be rotated.

3. Configure the encoder and YouTube destination
YouTube recommends RTMP or RTMPS ingest. Use the exact server URL and application path shown in Live Control Room. RTMPS is RTMP tunneled through SSL/TLS; YouTube’s protocol guidance requires port 443 and correct host/path handling, including preserving the hostname for SNI authentication. Use a valid YouTube RTMPS endpoint rather than constructing one from memory. Read Google’s RTMPS ingestion requirements.
For video, YouTube’s current encoder-settings page lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval (not exceeding 4 seconds). Its H.264 bitrate recommendations include:

| Output | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not measurements of a particular VM, source file or Indian cloud region. Match the source media, selected output resolution and frame rate, and the encoder’s actual capability. The YouTube encoder settings page has the current supported formats and guidance.
4. Start the feed and verify it before relying on it
Start the playlist/encoder process, then confirm that Live Control Room receives a preview and reports healthy ingest. Monitor the running process, CPU and memory, disk capacity, output bitrate and frame rate, and YouTube stream health. Confirm that your alert reaches someone who can act on it. YouTube’s encoder guide recommends checking stream health and verifying local archive files during encoder operations.
Decide whether you need one 24/7 session or shorter broadcasts
A continuously running encoder and a continuously archived YouTube watch page are not the same thing. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. If replay matters, schedule shorter sessions below that threshold and retain an independent recording. YouTube does not establish one universal session schedule for every channel, so test how boundaries affect your viewers and notifications. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

For resilience, a single VM remains a single point of failure. You can add a backup input or a second encoder if the service and budget justify the extra design and cost. Google’s managed Live Stream API supports a backup input, but that capability belongs to its managed pipeline and does not by itself make a VM-to-YouTube setup redundant; see the API architecture.

Google Cloud Live Stream API
Google Cloud bills Live Stream API resources while a channel is active, even if no input is present. Usage is billed by the hour and rounded up to the nearest minute after a 10-minute minimum; charges vary with configured input/output resolution and other features. Its listed H.264 HD rates are $0.14 per active hour for input and $0.45 per active hour for output. These are API resource charges, not a VM price or a quote for directly sending a stream to YouTube. Consult the Google Cloud Live Stream API pricing page for current configuration-specific rates.
AWS managed event delivery example
AWS currently shows an example of approximately $69.74 for a one-hour 540p event with approximately 1,000 viewers in US East (N. Virginia): about $2.50 for encoding/packaging plus $67.24 for 791 GB of distribution. It is an event-delivery example, not a monthly estimate for a cloud VM that encodes to YouTube; region and service availability matter. Details are on the AWS Live Streaming solution page.

Managed YouTube playout
YtLive Stream advertises cloud-based continuous broadcasting, playlists and shuffle scheduling, Google OAuth or RTMP connection, telemetry and reconnect recovery. Its vendor page displays Starter at ₹499/month (720p), Pro at ₹999/month (1080p and auto-recovery), and Business at ₹1,999/month. These are vendor-published prices and feature claims, not independent performance validation. Before buying, verify current limits, storage, concurrent streams, media import, account permissions, cancellation terms and security. Do not treat the vendor’s uptime claim as independently established. See YtLive Stream.
Protect the channel, media and stream key
- Grant server and YouTube account access only to operators who need it; avoid sharing credentials in logs or public issue trackers.
- Review OAuth permissions before authorizing a third-party playout vendor, and revoke access you no longer need.
- Check that the media you loop is yours or that you have the necessary rights. A continuous stream does not exempt a channel from copyright rules or YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service.
- Keep independent copies of important recordings and verify that your own archive is being written successfully.
- Plan a credential rotation and restart procedure so a compromised key or changed stream does not leave the channel offline indefinitely.
Common problems and practical fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder cannot connect to YouTube | Wrong server URL or key, incorrect RTMPS path/host, or blocked port. | Copy the current destination from Live Control Room; verify RTMPS port 443 and hostname handling; confirm the key has not been reset. |
| Live Control Room shows no preview or unhealthy ingest | The encoder has not started, the playlist ended, or the source/connection stopped delivering. | Check the process supervisor and encoder logs, confirm the playlist advances, and inspect stream health and output bitrate. |
| Video stutters or drops frames | Output bitrate is too high for the source/encoder path, the network is unstable, or transcoding exceeds available compute. | Compare output settings with YouTube’s recommendations; test the file and network path; reduce output demands or provision for the transcode workload. |
| Stream stops when a clip ends | The source is a single file rather than a continuous playlist/loop. | Configure the media source to advance or repeat and test the end-of-clip transition before going live. |
| Encoder stays down after a crash | No supervisor or alert is configured, or the restart procedure cannot access the media or credentials. | Configure process supervision and an actionable alert; verify the server can read the media and that the current key is available securely. |
| Long broadcast has no complete YouTube replay | The stream exceeded 12 hours. | Use shorter scheduled sessions if YouTube archive capture matters, and retain an independent recording. |
