How to Run a YouTube 24/7 Stream with a Google Cloud VM

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can run a YouTube 24/7 stream from a Google Cloud Compute Engine VM by configuring an encoder on the VM to send video to YouTube Live, then arranging for the encoder to start and recover when needed. YouTube supplies the stream URL and key in Live Control Room. The VM runs the encoder; it does not make a stream interruption-proof. Plan for process supervision, monitoring, secure key storage, and ongoing VM costs.

How the setup works

The basic path is a media file or other permitted video source, an encoder running on a Linux VM, and YouTube Live’s ingest endpoint. The encoder sends the stream URL and key associated with your YouTube stream. A boot-time startup script can run setup commands when the VM starts, but continuous operation also requires supervising the encoder process and checking whether YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.

This is an implementation guide, not a tested end-to-end FFmpeg deployment. The exact command and VM capacity depend on the input format, codec, resolution, frame rate, and whether the VM must encode or can pass through already-encoded media. Test the chosen configuration on your own workload.

1. Create a YouTube stream and protect its key

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to use.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key into your encoder configuration. The URL identifies the ingest endpoint; the key authenticates the stream associated with your channel.
  3. Keep the key secret. Do not put a real key in a public script, repository, screenshot, or article example. Restrict access to any file or service that stores it.
  4. If the key is compromised, reset it in YouTube. YouTube says a channel owner or manager can reset a stream key; update the encoder with the replacement key.

YouTube documents stream management and key handling in its live stream settings guidance. Treat the key like a credential: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to that stream.

2. Create a Compute Engine VM

In Google Cloud, create a Linux Compute Engine VM. Choose the region, machine resources, and disk based on the media and encoder workload rather than assuming one machine type suits every stream. If the source must be encoded in real time, CPU capacity can become a limiting factor; a pass-through or remuxing workflow can have different demands. The available documentation does not establish a universal minimum VM size for all codecs and output settings.

  • Decide where the source media will live and allow enough disk for it, logs, and any temporary files.
  • Choose VM resources only after identifying the desired codec, output resolution, frame rate, and whether encoding happens on the VM.
  • Restrict VM access and configuration access to the people who need them, especially if stream credentials are stored there.

3. Configure the encoder for YouTube Live

An encoder such as FFmpeg can send a feed to YouTube. Configure the actual input, the YouTube ingest URL and key, video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval. YouTube recommends RTMP or RTMPS for encoder streaming; RTMPS encrypts data through Google’s servers. Use YouTube’s current encoder table for the codec and resolution you choose, because recommendations vary by output.

Settings to check

  • Rate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR).
  • Video codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 options. Confirm compatibility for your encoder and workflow.
  • Frame rate: YouTube supports frame rates up to 60 fps. Match the setting to your source and intended output.
  • Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
  • Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3. Check the current guidance for the exact configuration.
  • Bitrate: For H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps, YouTube’s recommended video bitrate range is 5–14 Mbps. For H.264 at 720p and 30 fps, it is 3–8 Mbps. These are ingest recommendations, not guarantees of image quality or proof that a particular VM can encode at that rate.

For the complete, current combination of codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate, consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. YouTube transcodes live streams into different formats for viewers, so the encoder’s ingest setting is not necessarily the quality every viewer receives.

YouTube advises creators to test first and says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” For a cloud VM, assess the VM’s ability to encode the selected media as well as its outbound path; a speed test alone cannot establish that the process will run reliably.

4. Start the encoder on boot and supervise it

Google Cloud startup scripts can run commands when a VM boots. Google describes one as “a file that contains commands that run when a virtual machine (VM) instance boots.” Public Compute Engine images include the guest environment required for metadata startup scripts. A startup script is useful for boot-time setup, but it is not, by itself, a complete recovery strategy for an encoder that exits later.

  1. Put installation and launch steps in a startup script or use a Linux service manager to start the encoder.
  2. Configure a supervisor or service manager to restart the encoder after an application failure, with sensible logging and restart behavior.
  3. Keep the stream key in a restricted configuration or secret store rather than exposing it in publicly accessible files or logs.
  4. Monitor both the encoder process and YouTube’s stream health. A running process does not prove that YouTube is receiving usable audio and video.

Google’s startup script documentation explains boot-time execution. Select and validate the service manager and restart policy for your Linux image; the documentation does not establish a single tested FFmpeg service configuration for every VM.

5. Test the whole path before relying on it

  • Use a short test with audio and motion representative of the intended stream, and verify the preview and stream-health messages in YouTube Live Control Room.
  • Check that the encoder uses the intended stream URL and current key, and confirm the selected codec, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframe interval.
  • Restart the encoder deliberately and confirm that supervision brings it back and that YouTube receives the feed again.
  • Reboot the VM and verify that its boot-time setup starts the encoder successfully.
  • Review logs and alerts so that a stalled input, failed connection, or invalid key is visible rather than silently leaving the channel offline.

YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” No documentation cited here demonstrates a particular VM deployment or guarantees uninterrupted uptime. Treat reconnect handling and monitoring as operational requirements, not optional polish.

How much does a 24/7 VM stream cost?

There is no universal monthly bill: Compute Engine charges depend on VM resources, region, disk, and usage. A continuously running VM incurs runtime charges, and disk charges may apply separately. Google lists traffic from a Compute Engine VM to YouTube in a no-charge data-transfer category on its VPC pricing page; that does not remove the VM or disk cost.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google’s Compute Engine overview advertises a free tier that includes one e2-micro VM instance, up to 30 GB of standard persistent disk, and up to 1 GB of outbound transfer per month. Do not assume that allowance covers a 24/7 stream or that your selected configuration and region qualify. Check the current terms.

Do not confuse a VM encoder with the Live Stream API

Google Cloud’s Live Stream API is a separate managed service, not the same thing as a Compute Engine VM running an encoder and sending directly to YouTube. The API limits page says, “Live stream sessions last for 24 hours after you start a channel,” and says a channel may be restarted after 24 hours in a streaming state other than STOPPED or STOPPING. That condition applies to the Live Stream API channel; it does not establish a 24-hour limit for a VM encoder pushing to YouTube. The sources also do not establish an unlimited-duration guarantee for the VM workflow.

See Google’s Live Stream API quotas and limits if you are using that separate service. For a VM, plan for monitoring, process recovery, and YouTube stream-health checks rather than relying on an assumed duration guarantee.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube does not receive a stream Incorrect ingest URL or key, encoder not running, or connection failure Verify the current URL and key in the encoder configuration, inspect logs, and check the Live Control Room status.
Stream drops after an encoder error Boot-time startup was configured, but no process-level restart or reconnect behavior exists Check the supervisor or service manager policy, then test recovery by stopping the encoder and observing whether it restarts.
Video stutters or stream health degrades Encoding load, bitrate, or outbound path may be unsuitable for the selected output Compare the actual configuration with YouTube’s current recommendations; check CPU load and the VM’s network path, then test a lower-demand output if needed.
Video arrives without usable audio Input audio mapping or audio codec configuration may be wrong Inspect the source’s audio stream and encoder output, then test representative audio in the YouTube preview.
Encoder does not start after a reboot Startup script or service configuration failed, or the expected guest environment is unavailable Review boot and service logs, confirm startup configuration for the chosen image, and repeat the reboot test.
Unexpected cloud bill VM shape, region, disk, runtime, or applicable charges differ from the estimate Compare actual resource use with the pricing calculator inputs and current Compute Engine pricing.
