YouTube publishes these as encoder recommendations; they do not establish that a particular low-cost India VPS can encode your file in real time. Test on the actual instance before relying on it.
Recommended 720p settings for YouTube
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists the same H.264 bitrate values for 720p30 and 720p60: 8 Mbps recommended and 3 Mbps minimum. Treat 8 Mbps as the starting quality target. The 3 Mbps figure is a lower-bound option to test, not a guaranteed fix for a slow server. YouTube’s encoder settings also recommend RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes.

These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not a promise of identical rate-control behavior in every FFmpeg build. FFmpeg’s codec and protocol documentation describes the available controls and transport options: FFmpeg codecs and FFmpeg protocols.
Prepare the VPS and YouTube stream
Check the host before committing
A VPS is not suitable merely because it is advertised as inexpensive, located in India, or “unmetered.” Before choosing a plan, confirm its full recurring price, India-region location, CPU allocation and sustained-use policy, RAM, outbound port rules, continuous outbound throughput, transfer or fair-use limits, and support terms directly with the provider. No named India plan has been verified here as both low-cost and capable of sustained 720p encoding.

The example targets 8 Mbps of video before audio and transport overhead. The VPS route needs to sustain more than the complete stream bitrate with operating headroom. A port-speed headline or unmetered label does not demonstrate usable continuous throughput. One surfaced vendor listing is available at Soft Host VPS Plans, but its terms, price, and performance are not established here and should not be treated as a recommendation.
Get the private YouTube ingest details
- Open YouTube Studio and enter the Live Control Room for the stream you intend to run.
- Copy the stream’s ingest URL and its stream key as shown there. The ingest endpoint and key are account- and stream-specific; do not copy an example URL from an unrelated service.
- Keep the key private. Do not place it in public scripts, screenshots, repositories, or logs. Anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Confirm the installed FFmpeg build supports both
libx264and RTMPS before scheduling the stream.

Run a prerecorded MP4 as a 720p30 live stream
This command is an illustrative starting configuration assembled from the published settings; it has not been executed or tested. Replace input.mp4 with the file path on the VPS, and replace the output URL with the RTMPS ingest address and private stream key from your YouTube Live Control Room.

-rereads the input at its native playback rate instead of sending a prerecorded file as fast as the VPS can process it. FFmpeg documents real-time pacing with RTMP output in its protocol documentation.-stream_loop -1repeats the input indefinitely. Remove it if the video should play once and then end.- The filter scales the image to fit within 1280×720 while preserving its aspect ratio, pads unused space to reach exactly 1280×720, sets 30 fps, and outputs a broadly compatible pixel format. If the input already has the desired dimensions, frame rate, and format, simplify the filter as appropriate.

Check the FFmpeg output for initialization errors before leaving the stream unattended. An installed build may omit libx264 or RTMPS support. AWS’s separate IVS documentation includes an FFmpeg libx264/veryfast/RTMPS example, but that is syntax precedent rather than YouTube bitrate guidance: AWS IVS streaming software setup.

Validate performance and stream health
- Start with representative video and audio, including the most demanding motion or detail in the actual source.
- Watch FFmpeg’s reported processing speed. It should remain at or above real time; sustained speed below real time means the VPS cannot encode that workload fast enough with the current configuration.
- Monitor host CPU and network use while the stream runs. High CPU points toward encoding, decoding, or filter load; a network problem can occur even if encoding remains real time.
- Check the YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health status and messages. YouTube recommends testing before the event, watching stream health, and reviewing its messages.
- Only after a test on the selected server should you decide whether the instance is adequate for continuous use.
CPU capacity, source complexity, input rate, and network conditions all affect whether a low-cost VPS can sustain real-time streaming. There is no verified benchmark here for an India VPS, so a general plan specification cannot substitute for this test.
When to try a lower bitrate or 720p60
Lower video bitrate
YouTube lists 3 Mbps as the H.264 minimum for 720p30 and 720p60. If outbound bandwidth is the bottleneck, testing a lower rate may help, but expect potential visible quality loss—especially in motion and fine detail. Lowering bitrate does not necessarily fix CPU saturation, because bitrate and encoding complexity are separate constraints.

720p60
YouTube lists the same recommended and minimum H.264 bitrates for 720p60 as for 720p30. That does not mean the two workloads are interchangeable on a VPS: the server still has to process the selected frame rate and source in real time. Test 60 fps with the actual content and instance rather than assuming a rate recommendation proves the CPU is adequate.

Cost and operational trade-offs
Compare VPS plans on verified recurring cost and sustained performance, not on a “low-cost” label alone. Include transfer limits, fair-use terms, support, and the work of keeping FFmpeg configured, monitored, and recoverable. A VPS keeps the process off a home computer, but you remain responsible for the server, command, credentials, and stream checks.
